line of the day – ‘this is one putrid effort of a Nebbiolo’

The lighting in this flipcam episode was way too dark which is a shame as the end result is spoiled a bit. The highlight for me is when a random guy peers through the window from the street near the end… obviously thinking WTF is going on here.

I think we need to boycott professional sports. It is a mess. No loyalty, all about the money, can’t afford the tickets and blah blah who cares anyway.
Don’t buy the Jets Gary! Just laugh at their badness and enjoy.

Thanks to this eipisode, I’ve seen the light. And I won’t drink at wine bars.

Nice flipcam show! I WOULD LOVE YOU TO DO A SHOW AT MY RESTAURANT IN LA the next time you are out here. PLEASE let me know how we can work this out… I can email you my list if you’d like.

QOTD: BEST: 2006 Perrin & Fils Vinsobres les Cornuds
    WORST: 2006 Farnese Sangiovese

The guy in the green shirt who rolled up to the window at the end of the show definitely looked like he was up to no good.

Best: Montefalco Sagrantino (can’t remember year) that tasted like silk sheets made of lavender.
Worst: Too many to bad cabernets to remember.

Some quick thoughts about this episode….

    1. Why would a wine bar not want to show off some of the better wines they offer? From a marketing standpoint this show doesn’t make me want to go there.

2 I LOVE the “GV on the Road” concept visiting wine bars like this. Nice change of pace. Hope you can do more with your busy schedule.

    3. I won’t comment on the lighting issue. I’m sure you get the point from the other comments.

    QOTD

    Best – Chateau Montelena Cab.

Best: Muros Antigos alvarinho 2007: aromatic and interesting (a vinho verde all grown up!)

Worst: Oyster Bay Reisling – tasted ok, but served WAY too cold

Mott you just saved your job…GV may be good in wines, but when it comes to cameras, he’ll have to pass! Haha…No offence GV, but you were just a sillhoutte in the front of the glare.
Still enjoy your show and enthusiasm, dude!

QOTD: sorry GV, dont really like ordering by the glass. As you mentioned, breathing time is a major factor and the bottles are usually a better bargain. But sadly, it may be a hit and miss though!

Just a guest from what I know, but chlorine in a wine comes from a faulty cork. Meaning that nebiolo was corked. Just a thought, the person who opened that bottle should have never let anyone drink a glass from the bottle.

Nice show! Love the wine bar visit idea.

Have not been out to a Wine Bar in the past 97 days. . . now if you had asked about a visit in the last 100, then I would have had something for you. . . 😉

QOTD: Brought several wines to a party at my cousin’s restaurant. My favorite reds (difficult to narrow down) which ran neck to neck were a Stella Grey Napa Cab and a Layer Cake Napa Cab (probably from the same vintage)

Also the Ad-hoc Chard stood out amongst the whites and a Mercer SB ran a close second. Review is starting to sound like a little Kentucky Derby action without the Mint Julep.

The worst wine I had which doesn’t make the 97 day cut-off was a McWilliam’s Riesling, which I’ve had before, by the glass, but this bottle must have been open for days and the wine was not fresh and very thin to say the least.

Great show Gary, I don’t particularly like drinking wine by the glass because of how long the bottle may be open but…..

The best by the glass I’ve had recently..

    2007 CARO Amancaya Cabernet Malbec

    and the worst…

2003 Rodney Strong Symmetry…talk about ‘oak monster’

    Jacob L,

LOL! I think I had a case of the wine flu the other day from a chianti.

QOTD: I’m a wine bar virgin. Will probably avoid ordering by the glass for fear of how long the bottle has been opened.

  • GV…glad the Terrazas worked for you, I’ve never tried their cab but their malbec has been pretty reliable. Ouch, those by-the-glass prices just hurt to think about, for someone out here in the boondies, especially for something that you want to put back in the horse.

Only thing I’ve had by the glass, at a restaurant, in the last 97 days…
Goose Watch 2006 Lemberger (Finger Lakes) at the Turtle Island cafe in Willsboro NY. Very interesting Pinot-like, super black pepper finish.

Missed you Gary. Bill is drinking Coors in Golden,Colorado(another business trip)so I visited Cunningham’s Wednesday for a glass of Hardy Stamp cab with a mexican pizza followed by a Hardy Stamp semillon/chardonnay to chat with a friend. Lovely. Exhausted after a hard day as a cook, I hit the tennis club ( Cunningham’s again) for a Barefoot pinot grigio and their yum goat cheese and spinach pizza. I don’t know if these are considered anything special in the US but for Pointe Claire, Quebec after a wicked shift, in a nice glass it brought the thunder!

QOTD: I don’t buy wine by the glass. I always feel ripped off considering they charge enough for one glass to cover the cost of the whole bottle. I’d rather pick up the bottle at a store.

Gary, I know you are a big wine library email promotion guy. You should have a promotion where everything in your wine library ‘wish list’ is free shipping. I’d probably empty out my wishlist (only 8 bottles but still).

  • Some wine bars are very good about tracking and informing the customer how long a bottle has been opened. Some, sadly, are not.

    QOTD
    Best: 1998 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco
    Worst: Sterling Vintner’s Collection Cab.

GV, note to yourself, always keep the windows behind the camera. I’m sure there are others who have commented on this, but thought I’d mention it as well. Other than that??? I love the “on-location” episodes, keep up the good work.

QOTD: Uggghh! I have the worst time remembering the names of wines in restaurants..
Best: Was last night. Some kind of Meritage
Worst: A couple of months ago at a small Italian restaurant. A Barolo that tasted like paint thinner.

Sloppy episode, fitting for #666. Camera jerking around, ran out of recording time, had to wait while you got a spit bucket. Looks to me like you’re other venturs are causing you to “wing it” on WLTV. As we say in the South, “Don’t forget to dance with who brung ya.”

GV, could Dave the commenter be right and maybe that Nebbiolo was corked?

QOTD: The last time I went to a wine bar/cafe I had iced tea. But anyone in the Triangle NC area who doesn’t know about it yet– 3 Cups in Chapel Hill specializes in estate-grown (“terroir-driven”) wines, and they even have an info wall with photos about all the wines they are pouring by the glass/selling by the bottle. It’s a fun concept and definitely different from the Trader Joe’s .5 mile away.

    Gary,
Everyone is pointing out that you should have the window behind the camera, which is good advice, but some cameras have a backlight button (or function) which allows you to film with bright lights behind you if that works best for a room.

    QOTD:
Best: Black Bart red wine (not sure if it was the Syrah) I had with a great Bone in Rib-Eye at Ruth’s Chris.
Worst: some crappy house red at Outback steakhouse. Ugh!
