2007 Terrazas Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Valdolmo Nebbiolo D’alba

line of the day – ‘this is one putrid effort of a Nebbiolo’

The lighting in this flipcam episode was way too dark which is a shame as the end result is spoiled a bit. The highlight for me is when a random guy peers through the window from the street near the end… obviously thinking WTF is going on here.

Gary ? next time you’re evaluating new techie wine products, look at the Enomatic:

    http://www.enomatic.it/website/default.asp?catIDPadre=33&catID=34&docID=&lan=ENG

The Rotten Grape, Kelowna, BC: First Wine Bar in B.C. to offer exclusive enomatic wine serving system.

QOTD: Worst: A sweet ‘n sour, syrupy gewurz/? Okanagan blend tasted as the only disappointing one of a white wine flight at The Rotten Grape. (Google it!)

Best: Larose Le Petale d’Osoyoos tasted at Kettle Valley Station pub in Penticton

Great ending- hope Sanchez is that on target for your NYJ!

By the way, videography 101- DO NOT SHOOT INTO BRIGHT WINDOWS! You are fired as a videographer but still hired as my wine guru

Best/worst- Most of my wine drinking is done in BYO restaurants so not much experience with by the glass recently.

Wow, loved the super-evil dramatic back lighting on the big show number 666!

Keep kicking the shows out Gary. Hand held, on the road, even in the bathroom at the hotel like in San Diego. Whatever it takes.

QOTD: Sorry, the QPR of home cooking and sipping keeps us out of the gin joints mostly.

qotd: i haven’t been to too many places in the last 97 days, but i think it would have to come down like this.

best: churchill’s 20 year tawny port. it was delicious and rich but without being too sweet, and with tons of chocolate, caramel, and nuts on the nose. i would love to see you do a show on tawny ports.

worst: 2007 t’gallant imogen pinot gris. just foul, absolutely foul bitter, flavorless, alcohol water. and it’s strange too, it’s a wine i see around in a lot of stores in australia retailing around the US$12-15 range, so it must have some sort of following. i have to presume it just had been open way too long, something that usually deters me from drinking a lot of by the glass wine at restaurants.

Gary — I really like the idea of doing more shows on location at wine bars. Great idea!! Not sure if you noticed it, but it was pretty funny when that dude in the green shirt just appeared in the window at the end of the show.

QOTD: Best = “Sept Grains” Domaine Barmes-Buecher 2005 (biodymanic from Alsace); Worst = Not sure… probably forgot for a reason.

Best: J Pinot Gris, 2007, Russian River Vally

Worst: Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot

  • Hey Gary, don’t know if you’ll get this BUT…..
I’m a film maker in Vancouver and I love your stuff, so here’s a little filming tip. Never sit with your back to a window when it’s sunny or even bright outside and low lit inside. Your “backlit and it makes it kind of hard to see you. Just a thought. Keep up the great work.

    Gary,

My fiance would like me to remimd you not to shoot with the sun at your back.

Also, since you seem to have broken your Flip cam, maybe it’s time to upgrade to the HD version?

    qotd:
worst: a merlot from lomg island smelled like a you sucked the plasticky air out of an innertube
best: a sancerre- heavenly, rubbery citrus fest

both at Claret in Sunnyside, Queens-

Good show Gary. Love wine bars. We’ve got some good ones here in Portland and we’re a short distance from San Francisco….
QOTD: Best- Alandra, a red from Portugal. Haven’t had any bad ones recently.

  • Love the on location shows. Would love to hear you talk a bit about wine pricing in restos and wine bars. The qik cam knock-out was classic!

    QOTD
Best: A white italian wine from an obscure grape grown in the alps
Worst: Can’t say I have had one in the past 97 days

Fun flipcam show (but the back lighting is kind of hard to watch).
Liked the swine flu comment – hope you haven’t actually SMELLED the swine flu though!

    QOTD
Best: a crisp Roter Traminer at Terroir
Worst: … don’t remember, maybe I try to forget these?

  • monden

i’ve been to about 2 wine bars, so not much choice since i don’t even remember what i had at the first one!! I guess it wasn’t that memorable.

Best: Dr L. Loosen riesling. With some cod tapas and Rillette de Canard(duck spread) Awesome
Worst: A pretty bad Bourgogne grand ordinaire, it was in fact ordinary in a big way!!
A much cheaper south of France wine, the vin de pays d’oc terres de méditerannée was much better at almost 3 dollars less a glass!!

  • WATCH OUT…666!!!

First rule of shooting video. Don’t shoot people (aka YOU) indoors with bright sunny windows behind the subject.

Now that that is taken care of, on to the QOTD:

    Best: Bonterra (Organic), Mendocino 2006
    Worst: Castelllerin, Venenzia 2006

    Gary,
You should have had Samantha as a guest on the show! Maybe a future episode?
I loved the comment “no swineflu on the nose!” I think the hype is overrated.
Also, I know others have said it too, but you need to have Mott give you a videography 101 lesson for flip cam shows- keep the camera facing away from the light. I know that means you may have to squint, but you looked like an anonymous “America’s Most Wanted” interviewee. I really enjoy the flipcam shows, though!

QOTD: Only had one wine at a restaurant in the past 97 days, but it was one of if not the best I’ve ever had- ’07 Orin Swift The Prisoner. I guess per the question that would also have to make it the worst, which is a shame 😛

  • BEST: Chateau Lamothe de Haux Blanc 2008 (Bordeaux, France)

Not a big white fan BUT, this really kick’d my 3yr wedding anniversary dinner tonight into flavor full swing. Wife was happy too. Refreshing, fruity with a nice nose. Not bad.

Gary I know NOTHING about wine but LOVE when I find one that kicks my ass, I buy a case (at a good price mind you)! I wanna be on an episode with ya sometime! DM on twit @mjcarrasquillo

  • Best: Two Hand’s Gnarly Dudes Shiraz at Burton & Doyle Steakhouse in San Fran.

Worst: Babich Sauvignon Blanc at a wine bar on Long Island. Not that it’s bad, but how creative is it to have BABICH on your list? Wines by the glass are supposed to push the envelope a little bit, blech.

  • GV, you probably have heard this before: to get a good picture, even with a FlipCam, you should have the light behind the lens (i.e. into the face of your subject; aka you). When the predominant light source is facing the lens you end up not seeing much detail as is the case with this video.

Thanks for finally updating the WLTV logo in the corner, was wondering when someone would realize it’s not 2008 anymore 😉 I still love the impromptuness of when you do the flip shows, so keep them coming!

QOTD limited by the last 97 days here…
Best: Penfolds Shiraz (not sure wich “Bin” it was)
Worst: Some crappy “Cabernet Sauv.” that was an over sweet fruit bomb that Welch’s could have made.

QOTD…Best..Chateau Haut-beauesjore 03 Ste Estephe…..only an entry level….absolutely awesome.. it was my first experience with Bordeaux…

BEST: ZD Reserve Pinot Noir for $9 at Cork- Dallas
WORST: A Niersteiner Spatlese. also at Cork – Dallas.

GV, thought of WLTV tasting the Riesling – no acidity at all. Maybe open too long. The folks at Cork are great though. If you think a wine is open too long, just mention it and see what the staff does. At Dallas Cork they always follow up on it.

I am a wine buyer, sommelier, wine guy, whatever…
I do understand the difficulty in getting an interesting yet profitable wine by the glass program. It is hard to do. The distributors try to sell us all the same thing down here in Dallas. You either have to charge too much or pour the same ordinary (not necessarily bad) stuff.
So…forgive me if I sound too critical. A wine bar, by definition, should pour interesting stuff and they should make sure it is not open too long (day or two max IMHO). (i sharpie the date on the back).
When I go into a wine bar and they are pouring normal house wine stuff that most of us restaurant guys pour, to me, that is a negative. Does that make me a hippocrit?? I guess so. But, I want a wine bar to be creative and change things weekly. Cru & Cork are pretty good about giving variety on a regular basis.

  • Who was the guy who came up right behind you and peered into the window around the 11:45 mark? You should have him as a guest on the show.
