88/100

line of the day – ‘this is one putrid effort of a Nebbiolo’

The lighting in this flipcam episode was way too dark which is a shame as the end result is spoiled a bit. The highlight for me is when a random guy peers through the window from the street near the end… obviously thinking WTF is going on here.

    QOTD:

Best – I had a really nice Albarino at Aruglas (an Italian restaurant in Boulder, CO)—which is a grape varietal that I probably never would have tried if it wasn’t for your show, so THANKS!

Worst – Red Truck Zin at a bbq place in Lawrence, KS—probably had been open WAAY to long. I should have known that wine wasn’t my best choice at this place when I asked for a glass of the Zin and the girl brought me a white zin that I sent back. In hindsight, I probably should have just drank the white zin.

  • QOTD: I go to Paxton’s Cellar (watch the video) once a week so I can taste his latest California offerings.
    Best: everything he serves.
Worst: anything that can be bought at a grocery store.

MOTT…try cleaning the heads first. Much cheaper than buying a new camera and usually solves the problem!

  • SurfCityJay

Cool episode , although the triple-6 may have cursed the wines…

    QOTD:

Best: A Flying Goat Pinot at the Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang… check out the place if you’re ever in the area… good people…

Worst: Only had that one glass… so N/A

I don’t remember the best wine I’ve had by the glass, but by far the worst was at Cheesecake Factory–Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon. I could barely drink it. It is specially made for the Cheesecake Factory. It was over oaked and had a terrible flavor.

Now I know what Henrik Lundqvist felt last night when Sergei Federov’s shot flew past him with your shot at the end to the camera’s grille piece! Classic!

Good show though I felt I was watching “Poltergeist” with that back lighting effect. Could they have given you at least a half bottle of wine instead of the dregs of some leftover fodder? Geesh! I guess being “Not Available” is a godsend?

    QOTD

Best: Clark-Claudon 2003 10th Anniversary Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (aaaaamazing)
Worst: Saint Gregory 2006 Mendocino California Pinot Noir

As an FYI and on the Malbec theme, the QPR wines from Alamos are quite tasty. The Malbec Seleccione and their Torrontes is quite good on a rainy, dreary Wednesday.

You should always include Washington, DC as one of your culinary ventures.

Cheers and GO CAPS! Alex the Great wins MVP again. Bank on it.

Hey Gary, big fan of the flip cam on location shows. I’m looking forward to you featuring wine bars and restaurants especially in the NYC area. I would like to see you hit up some CT spots but we all know you have a busy schedule.

    QOTD
    Best – Peter Brum Riesling
Worst – A terrible cab that had a major run in with the oak monster.

Good news, bad news!! Good News – Gary thanks for thinking of the VNation and putting out this episode during your hustle. It is truly apprecaited every time you think of us while you are outside of the office. Bad news – You need to look into the light dude…and remember which way to set up the flip cam…Jeez it sucks that this has happened a few times (maybe even in a row). It takes so much away from what you are doing.

QotD: Sorry to agree with most…just do not order by the glass much, once a year maybe.

Awesome episode. Back lighting just makes it that much more real. Would be better without it but every once in a while is no big deal. All in all, awesome episode.

Best and Worst: Under 21 🙁

    Hehe.

Great to have you back, and the wine bar is a terrific idea. The backlight is a problem, though. By the way, there is nothing at all wrong with edits. It never hurts writing or video.

    Gary,

Off the topic question… I like to smoke pipe tobacco, and I was wondering if there are any types of wine that would go well with pipes or cigars. Or does the smoke just fry your tastebuds?

    Thanks..

    Hi Gary,

I love the idea of wine bars and enjoy a good one. However I find a common problem is that a lot of times the wines are open too long and start to fall apart. Kind of like the Nebbiolo you had. Resulting in $9, $10 or even more $$ wasted.

Did miss ya yesterday man, even if it was only one day.

I want to know how long you were talking into the camera before you saw that it stopped recording, I might just have finished the episode.

QoTD: None, I wasn’t 21 97 days ago and haven’t gone to a wine bar.

n/a:something the restaurant swore was ber. res. cab sav., but they must have mixed in sewer water to make a 750ml bottle last for 200 pours.

  • Okay, here is me telling everybody that Santa doesn’t exist again. Do you wonder why a hip, chic Upper Manhattan winebar is pouring two poor to mediocre obscure Italian wines and one pretty good mass produced Argetine wine by the glass when they have the option for every other wine on the planet to choose from? Yes, once again the almighty dollar. Either the distributor if offering a ridiculous price and the bar is making bank or the dsitributor rep is getting an incentive and has begged a favor. Terrazas, though pretty good, is the Beringer of Argentina. A wine bar in even my beloved midwest home of Akron would be embarassed to pour it due to its grocery store availablity.

Best- La Scolca Gavi di Gavi : Gavi by the glass can be scary if it has been open more than even a day. Mine was the first glass from a new bottle.

Worst – Salmon Run (Finger Lakes) Chardonnay by Dr. Frank. Not cheap and was supposed to be good. Tasted like unripe Finger Lakes/Erie Basin Chard.
