88/100

line of the day – ‘this is one putrid effort of a Nebbiolo’

The lighting in this flipcam episode was way too dark which is a shame as the end result is spoiled a bit. The highlight for me is when a random guy peers through the window from the street near the end… obviously thinking WTF is going on here.

Another great flip cam show Gary, Its awesome to see what you will do for the Vayner-nation.

QOTD: Its been a while since I have been to my local wine bar, I don’t go much because they are WAY over priced…saying that…I don’t remember what I had
    🙁

Thanks for the effort, but you said you set it up. How about setting it up with some good wines. I like wine bars but this is what you’ve got to deal with. Old, bad imported swilllll.
It’s been a while so I don’t remember the best or worst but the best wine bar was in Palo Alto. It’s called Vino Locale and they have great munchies and mostly very local wines in an old victorian house with a nice backyard for drinking etc.

Gary, did you check out the Park East Kosher directly across the street? Thanks, now I’m craving a big fat pastrami on rye! Did they recommend those awful wines for you to taste?
    Smell it first. TR

  • No best only 3 bad wines picked by other people including a Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, a Rosemoumt Shiraz, and a severely overoaked Clos Du Bois Chardonnay. Had a decent Montepulacino d’Abbruzo from Bracco but nothing great.

QOTD Best: a Prosecco, not sure which. Worst: a light insipid Italian red, not sure what it was but it really sucked ( notice I’m picking up your lingo ).

I hate leaving critical comments, but on a somewhat regular basis (especially when you are flip-caming it up), you create a back-lit situation. Hard to see you when the sun shines in through the windows!!! Still appreciate the content… and nice shot with the cork.

QOTD (don’t get wines by the glass much, so how about these)
Best: I BYOed to a Thai place a couple months ago and really enjoyed the Celadon Grenache Blanc from WLTV – great fruit and mineral tones and went ell with the Thai spice
Worst: Some horrible over-oaked chard at a wedding last month (good wedding, though)

  • BobbyTiger

A major pass for me Gary.

    Don’t do wine bars.
At 67 years, why would I?
    However,
I drink wine every night, in the comfort of my wife and home.

I never order wine at restuarants, or bars because its too pricey and the oppurtunity of having beer on tap always outweighs having an overpriced wine.

GV, loved the episode. I think your short, to the point reviews are the way to go in your show. Like the good ole days ;). Of course you can mix it up with guests, longer episodes, specials, but I would prefer if 3/4 of your shows were 12-15 minutes, 3-4 wine reviews. Keep up the good work my friend, the more I see you and your passion, the more I love wine.

What, no devils players for the episode?

QOTD: Schramsburg blanc de blanc 03 the best and the worst was something I can’t recall and part of a tasting menu.

    Fun show, love the flipcam!

Like many have mentioned, I don’t buy wine by the glass, for several reasons, 1.) like you said, the ex factor, of how long it’s been opened.
2.) If 2 of us can’t finish one bottle, then we’ll just either not get it, or have it packed to send home.
3.) most of the local restaurants, have a terrible by the glass selection anyway, like beringer nights, and sutter home. (sucky part of living in a small town)

Grest show, but I’m going through Mott withdrawl. You need to get back into the office.

QOTD: I’ve never been to a wine bar, and drinking in a resteraunt is too expensive.

Interesting show Gary. There is no way I would pay 8 bucks for a glass of subpar Chianti. Enotecas in Florence, where I live, you can usually find some of the best Chiantis and Classicos for 10-20 euros per bottle and 4-5 euros per glass, so put that into perspective next time you buy an 8 dollar glass of subpar chianti. I realize this stuff is made here and when I do return to the states, I will have to choose wisely.

    QOTD:best = 2006 tignanello 4.50euros 2oz
    worst= 2007 leonardo trebbiano 1euro

Triple 6 episode whoa, is that why it was dark? No it was because Gary had bright light at his back. GV, you have gotta pick better backdrops to the lighting is better! That goes for the San Diego episodes as well.

    QOTD:

Best – I had a really nice Albarino at Aruglas (an Italian restaurant in Boulder, CO)—which is a grape varietal that I probably never would have tried if it wasn’t for your show, so THANKS!

Worst – Red Truck Zin at a bbq place in Lawrence, KS—probably had been open WAAY to long. I should have known that wine wasn’t my best choice at this place when I asked for a glass of the Zin and the girl brought me a white zin that I sent back. In hindsight, I probably should have just drank the white zin.

  • QOTD: I go to Paxton’s Cellar (watch the video) once a week so I can taste his latest California offerings.
    Best: everything he serves.
Worst: anything that can be bought at a grocery store.

MOTT…try cleaning the heads first. Much cheaper than buying a new camera and usually solves the problem!
