  • Love this episode. Katie Lee Joel is great, she’s the new Martha Stewart. Up and coming.

QOTD..How ’bout a raspberry creme brulee? I’m assuming the show was taped on Long Island. With that in mind, below is a link to a Barefoot Contessa Recipe.

Hey GV…when are you gonna get Ina Garten on the show (Ms. Barefoot). That would be a hoot!

QOTD: Why, I’d make a rhubarb pie with a butter crust, of course!

You should drink that Portugese rose on the show, I’d love to see how it is.
QOTD: Either sargria or use it to make a reduction sauce for game.

    QOTD – rose and custard.

  • M

You may have convinced me to try another rose. I try one every few years.

QOTD: ?? I’m done drinking my wine with dinner. I rarely pair wine with dessert. Plus others already said the buttery rhubarb pie.

The Portuguese rose: what was it?
    Isn’t anyone else curious?

QOTD: I’ve never had a rose with dessert. I’d try it with cheese cake perhaps.

For those who don’t know the Portuguese rose is called Casal Mendez. Worked in a bottleshop in Sydney a few years ago and that stuff would walk out the door by the case.

If I remember correctly, quite sweet, not very good, and $10 a bottle.

My first comment-a podcast viewer so not on the site often.

QOTD: I don’t really pair dry wines with dessert, but I suppose you could macerate some strawberries or even watermelon with the dry rose–not completely certain about the end result–might have to add some sugar or serve over Angel Food Cake. ALso substitute the Rose for the Marsala wine in a Zabaglione egg custard recipe. I liked Gary’s food pairing with Crabcakes and oysters.

At the moment I just can’t imagine getting into Roses, but if I see the Donkey and Goat, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the show. Bringin on the thunder.

I’m a rose hater, Gary. Rose sucks, especially if it’s from Washington state and I’m from Seattle. I don’t mind Bandol rose but I’ll only drink it if someone else is buying. Katie Lee is hella cute btw

  • Oh God: I am leaving a comment which gives me mixed feelings.
    a) Jumilla Rosé and Rosé D’Anjou are great for me.
    b) Nice hustle but won’t be buying her books, unfortunately.

If only for the fact that Billy “the piano man” Joel (one of my favorite musicians) interrupted (which is a cool thing in itself having the interview at his home) and is married to the guest, I didn’t like this episode, I don’t really think much of KLJ, Sorry but it’s a fact (I can see you love her Gary, which is OK, she has some points to her credit here being a chef and taking your advice and pointers). She may have “credibility” in the USA, but not much elsewhere.

QOTD: Easy, I have a ton of them.- Milk caramel+pecan cake, profiteroles(trust me), Bananas Foster, Mango cream pie. For me, Rosé goes well with candied fruits, yams, sweet potatoes, and if you can imagine, strawberry/vanilla smoothies.

I read a few comments from people hating on this episode and had to comment. to be honest i loved it! i am 22 years old and do not know a lot about wine and it is great to have good entertainment while i learn a little. plus the background was not horribly lit and boring. i would say gary is the bridge between the people who know it all and the people who have no clue and that is a noble and i’m sure difficult place to be.

  • hi gary great show ! believe me or not all the best rosé i tasted were made with grenache (believe my winemaking experience from south of france you should drink the rosé of the year) thank you kind katie can’t follow you on twitter i’m on my space and my mother for mother days beleives i’m on facebook 🙂 QOTD : obviously the best rosé should be served with the dessert “la forêt noire” a grenache rosé ! ps : gary do not “put a label” on south of france with this tradition of rosé we used to make rosé traditionally because it’s hot on the med coast and rosé is the most refreshing drink

Did not know she was Mrs. Billy Joel, did not know the old guy who came down the stairs was her husband. But I liked the setting, a very pretty minimalist decor. Kathy Lee didn’t seem very knowledgeable about food either, but perhaps she was just in a relaxed mode because she was on somebody else’s show. Will look her up (never heard of her before). As for the roses, I’ve been curious about them so thanks for this show. I will definitely try the Goat and Donkey if they sell them up here.

Billy Joel’s wife is soooooo hot!
my dessert recipe would be her with whip cream and macerated berry juice. it would go perfect with any rose

Great episode. I haven’t missed a show since #300 and I think that this was the most natural (conversational) interview yet. Good job! Didn’t hurt that she was easy on the eyes.

  • Not a bad epsiode, like having an open mind. Will look for Goat and Donkey. It must be tough to market a wine, sometimes names really sound generic, and it’s a little daunting for someone who is anxious to learn. KLJ’s cute, and is probably quite good in her kitchen, but I wish she’d watched a little more wine lib before being on the show. I think then she’d have gotten a better vibe here in the comments.

I will check out the whitewater sometime, sounds like a great thing to do this summer.

Maybe a pound cake (lemon?) with fresh berries and whipped cream

Try the 2008 Crios de Susanna Balbo Malbec Rosé – it is excellent!

i tried not to say that’s is what she said.

QOTD: i would definitely go with something creamy like my favorite, raspberry creme brulee. i found a great rose from michigan. it is styled after a Beaujolais nouveau. With that particular one, maybe a plum crumble.

  • Great episode, Gary! Katie is a fantastic personality, and doing a rose episode leading up to Memorial Day with her was perfect.

    ALSO!

Thought it was AWESOME when the one and only Billy Joel rolls on in whistling his way down the stairs. That’s what separates WLTV from all the others!
