line of the day – ‘this is what I like to call ROC – Rip Off City’

I like this episode, all three wines basically sucked but GV battled through and sometimes panning wines is more entertaining than praising them.’

good show…in an odd way i enjoy when you give wines a pass…you explain the odd things that we might taste in a wine that is not of the ordinary, like peach, pear, etc…and you give us things like canned pea juice…love it…

QOFTD: tonight at work, in the kitchen, Journey “dont stop believin” was on the radio and i was quietly singing along…until the “dont stop belieeeevin..hold on to that feelaaaayyyyyyeeeeeinnn” part, got a bit loud, turned around and everyone was staring at me…humbly said I’m sorry….i think it got awkward for everyone….

  • Don’t apologize when you review bad wines: that’s all part of the wine world.
Helping give viewers hints on what to avoid is as valuable as pointing them towards really good wines.
    Enjoyed the episode!

    Gary,

Two nights ago, my wife and I tried a bottle of 2007 Anakena Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Chile. Many South American wines are terrific, but I had to apologize to her for buying this one. I have never tasted Windex, but I think that would come pretty close to the flavor profile of this pinot noir. It was crap by itself, and even worse with pork roast!

Hey Gary! You don’t have to apologize if the wine sucks. It ain’t your fault. 😉
QOTD: I almost ran over an old lady on my bike the other day. That is the last thing i apologized for.

Gary, I agree with the others, don’t apologize because even if the wines suck your descriptions are very entertaining. I did chuckle though when “not available” flashed on the screen on a show with wines that are “widely available” Thanks for all your hard work. Much Love..

At least bad cheap red wine is good for something. I’m not sure what. When I get bad white wine I really whine.

  • QOTD: I had to apologize to my gf this afternoon because I talked with an ex on the phone for “too long” while we were out for lunch. I hadn’t spoken to her in 4 months – talk about a lose-lose situation.

While watching this episode I did take the time to search my local wine and spirits store webpage (www.pawineandspirits.com) for all three wines shown. I am afraid to say that none of them are sold there. I live in PA(Steelers and Pens!)and have a hard time finding many many wines shown. I know their webpage is not very useful some times so next time I am in the actual store I will double check, but my hopes are low.

  • Come on, Gary…”Soave is a grape that gets overlooked”, not crushing it on the wine knowledge there are you?
Made up for it partially with the face you made for wine no. 3…
But seriously, how many people are watching this, and only one other comment mentioning the existence of the lovely Garganega grape variety… It boggles thee mind.

  • I thought you must have been in a good mood. I have had much experience with B&G Vouvray. Personally, I would not have gone much over 82 points and was shocked that you went that high since it really lacks acid. You made up for it on ther other two. Santi Soave and Santi Pinot Grigio separated at birth Have you ever seen them in the same room at the same time? Hmmmmm.

I apologize to my waistline as I didn’t work out today.

So let me try and understand this…..

The theme of the show is wines that are widely available but the title graphic that comes up for each wine says “unavailable”. Does that make any sense?

Looking forward to the next show.

Clearly you focus on palette descriptors and taste sensations and not the viticulture side. It would be more educational if you did the homework and talked more about the winemakers, grapes and geography. Just sayin, because I love your show.

People overuse the sorry word. Stick to your guns. I love PBR, but only cause it’s cheap and is close to water. Put a lemon in it, or mix it with 1/2 grapefruit juice and you have a drink.

  • To my wife once a week for some wrong I have committed. Never always sure of what it is. Why apologize. You didn’t make these wines. Guess this confirms, don’t buy wine at the grocery store.

The bad wine episodes have their own value in highlighting wines to run away from. I find it interesting that, although it’s not always easy to get a consensus on what is a good wine, I find that it’s easier for a group to pick out a wine they all don’t like.

QOTD: Yesterday, for not getting in touch with a good friend as quickly as I should have when I moved back to his ‘hood.

i agree with zach. why bother tasting so many wines that are unavailable?it would be much more enlightening to review wines we can actually buy.

I punched in the hood of a car that came no less than 3 inches from hitting me earlier in the evening on my way home from a lesson (on my bike). The driver apologized…but then wanted to know who would pay for the hood. I apologized and wanted to know who would answer to a collision call to the police. Needless to say, I got home safe and everyone is the better for it.

That was a pretty funny episode bad wines always make me wonder what the hell was the winemaker thinking?

  • Bad wines are part of wine. At least now we all know that there are readily available crap wines all over the country. 🙂

QOTD: To my husband for knowing how much he sells himself short on a daily basis.
