Thank YOU for 679 episodes of fun.
Yes I did enjoy the quiet part. That was kind of nice.
QOTD: I think you should wear a mic when your not in the office. For instance in a restaurant or something but its not necessary in the office.

DAMN, you had to go and taste the Esporao Reserva on WLTV! This has been a “private stock” fave for me for about 6-7 years. Fortunately for me, there is tons of it (and other Portuguese wines) available at good prices here in SE New England. BTW GV, I believe the Portuguese pronounce Alentjo as Al – N – tay – joe. Unlike Spanish, the letter J is spoken like English.

  • Survey: Wireless mic, good for if you’re moving around, but just sitting I see no point unless it allows you to be a bit more relaxed in your delivery, do you find yourself projecting out to the mic more than you’d like? If so, go for it.

“Sometimes when you have something explode in your mouth, I don’t appreciate it.” with sexual entendre like that you sound like Vince at Shamwow. Seriously, don’t turn into Vince at Shamwow, you will make me very very sad.

I’m going to be forgiving and say most of this manic coming through is due to being excited about having your first child, so HUGE congratulations and God willing good health there.

But seriously when you went into the massage bit, killing the calm completely, I just wanted to slap you in the face and say holy shit man, take your meds. Manic much?

YES!!! Finally someone who likes Portugese wines as much as I do, the Esporao Reserva is absolutely great. You should try the Esporao Private Selection Tinto and the Torre de Esporao too, they are even better than this one. The Esporao Branco is winning a lot of awards here in the Netherlands, it’s great with food like truffles.

  • No to the mike at the shop.

A big yes to a mike off location, especially with a crowd.

Great show G. Vay. No, No, THANK YOU!
I gotta try that Vila Santa! Sounds delicious!
QOTD: No mic needed (except in San Diego).

My QOTD: Are you gonna cut the umbilical cord?

  • Great show!

Concerning the mic. From a professional standpoint I’d say yes, however, the on camera mic has been doing such a fine job I’m not sure dealing with the potential hassles of a mic is necessary. Is it brushing your clothes? Are you yelling into it? If you were in a larger room, or moving around more, I could see it being essential, but right now it’s overkill.

Love these short and sweet episodes. I enjoy exploring different regions. How about a german riesling episode?..I would try the wireless mike and see how it goes.

    Gary…say it with me:

ALLEN (as in Allen Patrick) – TAY (rhymes with “day”) – JOO (like JuJuBes)

Alentejo. I WILL get you to say it correctly one day. The Portuguese government won’t hire you until you say it right!!!

I usually just listen to the show running in the background at work. But everytime you do “portugal” I have to stop working to “watch” because I need the visuals to make out what you are trying to say. I didn’t understand anything you said the 1st part of the show…but that’s ok

I’ve tried the Esporão 2004…say it with me:

ETCH (like etch-a-sketch) – POUR (as in “pour wine”) – OW (as in “ouch”)
    Now say it together fast…

Anywho…that was an exciting wine. I was on a weekend kick of the stuff for a solid 2 months.

QOTD: Wireless mic could be a good idea because you move around a lot and your voice may be mumbled. then again, you already are loud as all hell. No, No mic.

  • Holladown

    no mic at the WL
    but on location yes.
using the flip cam, no mic, b/c its an in your face type of thing and works well.

been trying out more porto vinos, and am intersted in a few of these, so thanks for the episode, and all your hard work.

    CRUSH IT!

  • Hi Gary,

Thanks for sharing a bit of the Portuguese culture. As a Portuguese myself, I always find it very rewarding when people appreciate the really amazing stuff that my country has to offer.

I love your passion about life, the universe, and basically everything. I wish more people were like you, man. Keep it up 🙂

  • QOTD: No mic in-shop. Mic definitely needed on those long shots when you’re at the tastings etc.

Awesome show. Nice to be back old-school. Love the on-locations and the flip cam vids, but nice to see you at home every so often.

Now if only that damn phone would ring… 😉

  • Hey Gary

Great show, I love Portugese wine and drink a bit of stuff from Alentejo. One of the best things about living in Hong Kong is being able to slip across to Macau to stock up on egg tarts, coffee and Portugese wine.

I’ve actually had the Esporao Reserva Red a few times and love it, though I think all their range is impressive. Have you had a look at their website, it’s very slick.

QOTD: I like the free look with no mic, but what ever you’re comfortable with

    Cheers
    Andrew

Great show today GV! Your timing is impeccable, I’m gonna miss you this Friday at the WL because I’m heading with the family to Portugal actually!

We’re staying in Sessimbra a town south of Lisbon, and one of our day trips will be to Evora in the Alentejo!

I’ll be missing the show for a week, but i’m sure you understand. Good luck with the new baby, it’ll probably be here when I get back.

Gary…sometimes the sound quality is echo-y (is that a word?) so if on person mike works better, I’m on board with it! Can’t wait for baby news. I visited Portugal 2 yrs ago, and have a special place in my heart for their wines. Another great show.

  • jigger

    QOTD No.

Please keep taking us on the world tour of lesser known regions and varietals of interest to you these days, love it. Peace.

qotd No mic! Sounds perfect as is.

Time for me to seek out some Alentejo. Another great episode

So with the third wine today you mentioned that it was tight on the nose, and that leads to a question. When you have wines on the Thunder show how long have they been opened? I would think giving the wine some good time to breath might help open it up.

Also – do you usually decant your young everyday wines in the hope of opening them up more, or do you just decant your mature wines?

    Personally, I decant EVERYTHING!

    Thanks for all the information!

  • Great show Gary! Feels good to see you talking about Alentejo wines with such passion. One of my favourite regions too and thankfully I’m only 100m away from one of the biggest wineshops in Portugal 🙂

If anyone wants to try Portuguese wines please join the European Wine Bloggers conference in October and discover this beautiful wine country. http://winebloggersconference.org/europe

That was a great show….Touriga National is one of my favorite varietals when used in still wine, (I’m generally not a port fan) Had some Virginia wine with Touriga National in the blend that rocked my socks off.

    QOTD: NO MIC!

There was an episode a while back where you wore one, which one was that? Anyhow it just kepped getting banged, and breathed, and just sounded annoying.

I guess I will concede that it would be ok for location stuff.
