Good show, good guest. I love the way GV says to the guy (who is German) -‘does your grandfather bust your chops?’ and is surprised when the guy doesn’t understand the question…..
Somehow I doubt whether ‘bust your chops’ is in the German/English phrase book.

  • Love the guest! He was humble and smart and funny. Very cool guy, would love to try his wines.

QOTD: winemakers aren’t sexy but nature assistants definitely are.

GV – Thanks for having some good GERMAN Riesling, and a great guest on the show! I’m sorry that you missed a grand opportunity to again simplify, and demistify the German wine label, with three clear examples.
Kasterer (village), Paulisberg (vineyard), Riesling (grape), and finally, Kabinett (style).
Brauneberger (village), Juffer (vineyard), Riesling (grape), Spatlese (style).

Far too many people still are afraid to buy these beautiful wines because of this simple, but intimidating lack of understanding, and it is a CRIME. And the industry finds that the answer is to make stupid labels for a “stupid” public, and then makes about 99% of that rubbish out of shitty mass produced grapes, or purchased, Bereich grapes at very best, and they aren’t even in the same league as this type of wine.

Sorry about the Fritz Haag. I’ve been a huge fan of his brother, Willi Haag’s Brauneburger-Juffer, and Juffer Sohnennuhr wines for a dozen years, and they always take to a place that is a sunny day in my mind, no matter where I am.

QotD – Yes! Delia, Pam, Heidi, and their kind are sexy in their mastery of their great wines!

Lovely kid, and glad to hear his wines are good too!

QOTD: I am a guy, so I could not care less if wine-makers are sexy, but when I will start making my own wine I hope there is some sex-appeal…

Great chemistry on this show. The guest was very “real” and genuine, and I appreciate that. Love to see the passion, makes me want to pop a bottle right now.

I second an earlier post that dry rieslings get bad press. I think they are under rated.

I know some winemakers over here but “sexy” as a descriptor fails to capture their essence.

  • Gary,

Awesome episode i liked the language barrier. It almost adds another layer of plot in each episode. What was with the skips? Still having camera difficulties?

QOTD: The key is “Can be”. I’ve seen my fair share of old fat dudes sweating over a open bottle to know that its the person not the wine that makes you sexy, but it doesn’t hurt.

They can be :-), I liked the episode, however I felt that the on air answering of questions was a bit rude because you had a guest.

    Great episode, Gary.

Belated congratulations on your new baby!

BTW, that guy who was dissing the Anderson Valley OBVIOUSLY has never been there. Napa, it ain’t. My first great wine experiences were in the Anderson Valley, and I have many fond memories of that area. BTW, I live in Oregon, so when I have nice things to say about any place in Cali, you know I mean it. 😉

    Hi GV,

Nice to see an international guest on the show.

As of German wines, down here in Brazil they got their reputation ruined in the 80?s by a mass-produced poor quality Liebfraumilch that is still in the memory of the average consumer. It generated a repulse for white wine in general and an even greater one for German wines.

QOTD: Where are the good looking girl winemakers?
Gary it?s time to bring some girls to bright up the show!! 😉

    Kiss on Misha,
    Best wishes,

    Mauricio Fernandes.
    Recife ? BRAZIL.

  • Great guest. I love German Rieslings, each qualification has it’s own great taste and use, though I only do QmP’s, nothing less. Anything less is 3 buck chuck. smile. Pronouncing the categories and qualifications is really helpful, especially from a native. Can’t wait to get back to Germany and seek his out.

Us vineyard owners in NC – worry about rain, humidity, mold, rot, mildew, hurricanes, tornadoes, deer, Japanese beetles, robins (can ruin a pound of grapes a day) – just to start the list.

QOTD: we are. yes. Good question.

Gary, I just saw you on Fallon and thought I would check out your site. I think you’re really entertaining. I don’t drink wine much, but since I’ve found your site maybe I’ll try some and follow my pallet.

  • Enjoyable guest, and great to see that he is committed to carrying on his family tradition, and taking it farther.
Sure, it’s nice to be able to try and find the wines on the show, but it is mostly about the knowledge he shares.

G.V. wants to share the thunder with us when he discovers it, but more than that I think he wants the people of the Vayner Nation to be prepared to search for the thunder themselves, and return it with love.
Tried some lovely Leonard Kreusch Rieslings a few weeks ago – Estate Mosel 07 and Johannisberg Rheingau 06 – very reasonably priced at retail for the quality +++

    QOTD: We are certainly gastrosexuals…

  • I love this guy, definitely someone I would love to have a bottle with.

QOTD: Of course…it is one of those professions that has been sexy since it started, like suit making and woodworking…men working with their hands and their materials…I wish I had that job..sheesh.

Good job on the Fallon show, Gary! Still not convinced he’s funny though! 🙂

But on the interview skills, you have to talk “standard English” and reduce the slang with guests for whom English is a second language. Unless you don’t want them to understand and just say “yeah” to anything you say. That’s my take.
