Good show, good guest. I love the way GV says to the guy (who is German) -‘does your grandfather bust your chops?’ and is surprised when the guy doesn’t understand the question…..
Somehow I doubt whether ‘bust your chops’ is in the German/English phrase book.

  • Cool to see an episode with a sort of “shout out” to the military! I’m stationed in Germany (not at Spangdahlem, but still) and have enjoyed tasting the local wines! I’m due to rotate back to the U.S. soon, where it will be hard to find the Dornfelders and Trollingers I’ve come to enjoy, but it’s good to know I may be able to find a few Rieslings and Kabinetts.

BTW, I live south of the Mosel Valley in Stuttgart, where the Baden-Wuerttemburg vintners are showcased every August at the Stuttgarter Weindorf (or wine village). Perhaps some day Gary will do a live WineLibrary TV Thunder Show from the wine village…

    teri 🙂

    Gary,
Good episode. I like the German guests. So often their senses of humor / personalities are so at odds with your own, it makes for a fun, initially awkward, episode. I especially like they way in which everyone loosens up by the end of the show. It’s nice to walk away from viewing an episode with a good feeling!

I 100% agree that dry rieslings don’t get the respect they deserve here in the states. And I think that being 26, young vintner of the year in a world-respected wine region, and having the nice laid-back personality to roll with GV definately makes you sexy.

Why all the negativity? I thought the episode was great. Good to see young people in the industry and props to him for hustling for wine!

Another great show GV! Riesling are not something I usually drink cuz they are too sweet but the price points are worth my budget now!

Good episode GV. Enjoyed expanding the global palate.

It would be selfish to only like the episodes that have wines that are available to me. I enjoy learning about any and all wines, or beers, or whiskeys (available or not).

QOTD: It depends how big her boobs are. Whoops – bleep that out Mott!

Kind of rough when the kids wine does well and then you bash his boss’s efforts. HAHA
Can’t wait to see what Fallon has in store for GV!
QOTD: Only tall exotic brunette women winemakers from south of the border!

I liked the episode and love Rieslings! I would really like it if someone would fix the first wine listed below the video (Wines tasted in this episode:) to reflect what the guy actually made.

QoTD: Sometimes, but cocky only gets you so far. You gotta back it up with something REAL!

enjoyed your show once again, just that I still don’t fully get the German terminologies. Still a noob in that region!

  • QOTD: This guy is so freaking adorable (and you too, Gary) that I have watched this episode more than once. Is that creepy? So the answer is yes, yes, a million times YES.

  • Good show – makes me want to hunt down some more dry German wines. Sounds like I might have to pop over to Deutschland to get a better selection.
QOTD: I imagine so. More of a Q for the ladies perhaps. I can see myself being attracted to a young female winemaker – but don’t tell my wife! She’s concentrating on the vegetables at the moment and frustrated by my lack of interest!

Great episode, great guest. Unlike the episodes with Daniel Schuster, I learned more about the wine culture (not that those episodes weren’t entertaining in their own way). I’ll be looking for some more dry Riesling to try! Gotta love the acidity.

Nice show on Rieslings and your guest was interesting. I see some other commenters think he is full of himself and perhaps he is – I know I would be if I were 20-something and named “young winemaker of the year” – pretty heady stuff. Your tasting notes indicate that you like his work, too.

    QOTD: Dude, don’t go there!

I really liked this kid, great passion for his juice.

QOTD: My boy Chris who’s winemaker at Tularosa Vineyards in New Mexico would say HELL YEAH winemakers are sexy! (maybe he’ll bring me back some German Reisling from his trip to Germany now!)

Awesome episode, totally obvious passion from this kid made me want to go to germany just to be able to taste his riesling. Also I love Anderson Valley, can’t believe the hate it was getting in those commments.

QOTD: I think the answer is an obvious yes, making wine who doesn’t love that?

  • Gary, this guy is awesome. I love the Wine for Posers seminars! Great idea!

QOTD: YES! wine makers are sexy, especially cute German ones!

… there is one substantial date when it comes to german Wine !! “1985” … The Diethylenglycol(awful word )- Scandal hit Europe. After that the Germans turned away from sweet wines … google that if you like !! Most of the german consumers today still believe that a) most “Spaetlese”-Wines are sweet and b) sweet wines cause headaches …. both statements are simply not true !! That said one has to understand that originally ( when the majority of wines produced and drunk in Germany were sweet and had a low alcohol content ) german wines were drunk without food … it is only in the last 10 – 15 years that sommeliers worldwide have focused on dry and semi-dry Rieslings for food pairings !! The climatic change and consequentialy lower acidity levels have had made an impact here !! Gary – try some of the Pinot Gris from the lower parts of Germany : Great Stuff for food pairings !!
Nice Show – again shows the potential of german wines … if you can´t get hold of a bottle – please don´t forget they own 5 hectares … Keep on Rockin´

  • Love the guest! He was humble and smart and funny. Very cool guy, would love to try his wines.

QOTD: winemakers aren’t sexy but nature assistants definitely are.
