line of the day – ‘big and bright…if you like…brig fruit’

Old school episode with no messing. Just the smell, and the taste of several wines. I think GV would describe this effort as ‘focussed’.

  • Observation: the bottle says 2006 for the Stags Leap and the titleing and links above say 2007….

STOD: Gary, what advice can you give on “Crushing It” before the book comes out? I’m working on getting a head start, and have run into some technical shortcomings with my skills but I’m trying to figure it out and I’m pushing onward. Need to do this on a “dime budget” for the moment but that will not affect my content, which I know is the KING.

I’m growing weary of waiting for the economy to turn around so I’m going to turn around my own economy with my own individual/independent efforts to make things happen. You’ve laid a good roadmap thusfar, just looking for some more nuggets to make things POP quicker.

If you started a vlog about ’80s toys & figurines I’d totally watch that too.

Gary – I’d like to see you do more restaurant wine list analyses. Particularly from an educational perspective for new wine drinkers who would like to know the basics for getting around the list. What varietals tend to go with what types of food? What is the best way to break down a list and eliminate some of the options to narrow down to the ones worth trying? Tips, advice, etc. You could do a lot via video to help educate new wine drinkers beyond just “expand your pallette and watch my episode where i eat dirt and lots of foods”. 🙂

    Gary–

I was really impressed with the way you responded to the people who didn’t appreciate your spilling of the wine yesterday. If it were me, I’d have been much more pissed off and told the dissenters to f–k off or shut up. You pay for the wine and it’s your show–do whatever the hell you want. If people don’t like it, they can leave.

Just in case my 1st comment didn’t post because of the “your comment is awaiting moderation”, I’m going to try again.

Gary ? TERRIFIC EPISODE!!! I?m really liking the variety recently where you?re mixing in 1 wine shows, then 6 wines today. Keeping us on our toes and we love you for it. Enjoyed the C.R.E.A.M. Cash Rules Everything Around Me reference quite a bit, as well as the tribute to the creaky chair.

SOTD: There is an exciting new winery in Purcellville, VA called ?Notaviva?. Their play is integrating the music & wine worlds. Tonight I?m attending the world?s 1st ?Wine/Music Pairing Event?. Blind taste 5 wines and listen to 10 one minute clips of music to choose favorite pairing. Gary, I wanted to invite you but I know how busy you?ve been with the baby and life. I will take pictures and post next week. The website describes the event.

They also have an absolutely gorgeous 3 story timber frame tasting building that was featured on HGN?s ?Dream House? series. This is definitely of my favorite VA wineries because they?re doing some innovative things and helping change the wine world!

Hi gary, Been watching WLTV for about 9 months. Been into wine for about 12 years and I think I know a bit and have tasted a wide variety. In terms of entertainment your wine blog is second to none, but when it comes to wine education there are many out there who simply blow you away. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it, that goes for Parker too, you blow him out of the water in the charisma department.

However, I’m now finding it a bit boring at times. Not you, you’re a dude and a half. I think it’s just the format that doesn’t do it for me in the long term, although you seem to have a very loyal following who just keep loving it no matter what.

Have you heard Empire Of The Sun, by the way, I’m listening to them as I write this, they’re bringing the thunder.

You are a bit of an enigma to me at times. On the one hand you have a lot of integrity, you make great efforts in dealing with people’s concerns and your transparency is inspiring. I understand that you have a drinks business and I don’t take issue with your use of WLTV in the general mix of growing your trade. However, I do get the impression that sometimes there is a hidden agenda – guests, wines, QOTD etc often seem like a marketing exercise. I know you’re a modern entrepreneur, but is this an area of concern? Maybe I’m too cynical?

The thing that bothers me most of all throughout the wine trade, is the lack of foresight concerning the dangers of alcohol. Wine consumption has grown greatly in recent times. There is so much promotion of wine in romantic terms. I know that it is a great product, but it’s addictive and damaging if wrongly used and I thing that certain vunerable types will develop alcohol related problems as a result of wine marketing strategies, in a similar way to what has happened with tobacco. I don’t want to sound like a bore, I’ve worked in the wine trade and had my own wine business, but I don’t see that this problem is being picked up on much. Personally, I would avoid the temptations of a vast student market. Young people generally don’t care that much about the finer points of wine, alcohol is more important. I know some who have aquired drink problems stemming from their university excesses. Making wine attractive to young people, is in my view, a mistake. I’m sorry to be making such a strong point here, but it’s something that very much concerns me.

I find I’m now taking more interest in your blogs on business. This is where I think you bring the real thunder with lightening too. Looking forward to reading CRUSH IT.

I love Americanisms. The words and phrases that you and your guests come out with are priceless. I’m a British 2nd generation Italian ( if that makes sense ) and I recognise the origins of some of them, but I’m now confused: what is the difference between a geek, a dork and a nerd ?

    God bless you,

    Zino

Hi Gary, hi Mr. Mott, hi Sasha!

Nice show as usual. The other day (Sake show 2) I described my 3-stage epiphany on wine. I think Gary already taped the following episode, so he did not have a chance to read it. (Or it wasn’t cool enough! Kkkkkkk…) Anyway, it?s been on hell of a ride in this wine world so far.

I am missing an Amarone show GV! I know that credit crunch is taking everybody down up there, but would be nice to have those beauties on the show again.

Best wishes to the Winelibrary crew.

Qotd: Overall I enjoy your show and there isn’t much that needs changing. I would like to see a more regional type of approach to the wine though, because I can never seem to find the wines that review in the wine shops around here. But it could also be because I live in College Station, TX which is not known a cultural city in the least.

SOTD: Our regions distributors won’t bring in anything unless they can get a guarantee of selling 500 cases of the brand. It kills the diversity to be had in our package stores. This was said to my parents when discussing our wine hobby and why we visit package stores in neighboring states for something different every time we get the chance. I hope that the new laws that Tennessee has been working on amount to more than nothing. I’m still ticked about the form letter I got back from a local representative stating they were not interested in my issue (okay I used a “free the grapes” form letter to complain about our archaic shipping laws).

Anyway, keep up the good work as long as it is still fun.

SOTD: You should visit the forums more often than you do. Yes you are busy with the new kid and all, but you are hardly ever on there. And then a lot of times its a hit and run. Plus it will be easier to bust your balls once the Jets start loosing to my phins just like last year with that “old guy” who was taking you to the superbowl or so I was told.

  • My first comment ever on a WLTV and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your show. It’s even better than a lot of shows on TV these days. I’ve been watching since episode 400 or so and bought your book for my dad last father’s day who’s big into wine and the Patriots, not me, don’t worry.

    Keep up the fantastic work!

SOTD: You got me interested in wine and at only 19 I’ve been dying to try some of the ones you review (once I become of age, of course ;)). I think I can speak for people my age and say that they will find wine less intimidating and more fun because of people like you. I want to consume as much knowledge as possible so I’ll be ready for what the wine world has to offer when I can have my first bottle.

    Hey Gary,

Great episode! I think you should do another episode on value wines from Portugal. I just had the Casa Santos Lima Bons Ventos Estremadura Red that you guys sell and thought it was an amazing QPR! Also, I think you should get Sasha to do his own show once or twice a week.

Gary, I really expected you to throw in the towel on wltv once you became a dad. I’m so glad that you’re still in the arena, throwing down with the vino. Thank you!

With regard to this episode, I really enjoyed the format of focusing on many selections from one winery. It certainly makes it easier for me to remember the producer, which means it’s more useful to me in the long run.

SOTD: Really been enjoying the episodes lately. I’ll be leaving for Marine Corps Boot Camp in August, so I’ll have a bunch to catch up on over my Christmas Break when I return. I’ll also be turning 21 while I’m away. What are some good Holiday wines for a new wine drinker? Perhaps a Christmas in July episode so I know what to keep an eye out for?

Thanks for bring some Thunder to all of our lives, Gary.

I have been a huge fan of yours since I met you last summer in Des Moines, IA on your book tour. Currently, I am taking summer classes at Iowa State University. Watching your show has been a great way to relax at the end of a long day. Keep up the great work with everything.

Gary, I think you’re putting out some great shows recently. Loved the Sake show, and this show was “classic” GV. We know you’ve got a lot of other things on your plate and appreciate you pumping out the content with speaking engagements, book deals and most importantly Mischa in your life. Keep up the fantastic work.

I found the chopped tape to be quite humorous. It was like the camera (or Mott)
