line of the day – ‘Big blackberry flavours exploding on my nose like a grenade’

Barnstorming episode featuring GV at his best. When he goes on about the nuances of different vintages his knowldege is scary. The visible wince when trying the last wine is classic Gary, and sticking the wooden box on his chair as an Oak Monster substitute made me laugh. A classic.

Excellent episode Gary! Congrats on hitting 700!!!

The most memorable episode for me would HAVE to be #148, because before that, I really had no clue how much went into tasting wine, and just seeing the look on your face as you were staring down that jalapeno made me fall out of my chair laughing. YOU NEED TO DO ANOTHER EPISODE LIKE THAT!

I started out watching Wine Library TV last year when I was applying for a job promoting North Carolina wines and it was just a great thing to know that while I waited to see where my app went I could learn more about wine. I didn’t get the job but I continued watching WLTV.

One of the eps that really hooked me was the 549 Charles Smith. That was the one that hooked me on the idea of wine as a creative creation. Of course 148 is probably the most memorable overall, doing the Jalapeno pepper and then busting out the Cristal out of the blue. I also liked your baby boom rock star guest whose name escapes me, who lived everywhere and ended up in New Zealand. Lots of laughs and education out of that one. Also you read my comment on one episode in the past year, so that had to be a fave too.

  • Congrats! i actually like reading the comments that get posted – it really gives a sense of how your listeners are affected by your honest commentary – it shows also an incredible range of experience and knowledge of the viewers – and the range and depth of the education you are offering –

i like the special guests – who doesn’t love jancis (parker maybe) – i would love to ‘meet’ some of the cutting edge producers on the fringes of stardom and maybe some of the old guard like bob craig, steve lagier, p-h gagey, matt kramer and others who have really and softly changed and moulded the wine world to where it is. they were often the consigliari to the big guns or quiet leaders withing their communities. i am sure you know these faces better than i do –

big shout out from toronto and my qotd to you: where is hacksaw and the sheik?
you got me really laughing with the my little pony phase – my 6 year old thinks you rock!!!!

Congrats on episode #700 – I’ve been on board since late ’07 – love all your shows, but still by far my favorite (and to answer the QOTD) is episode #605 with Hendrik Thoma. Gotta bring him back for another show!

    Keep it up Gary V!

First of all I LOVE will it blend. The first iPhone came out on my birthday and I couldn’t afford a $500 phone. Then Tom Dickson blended an iPhone and it made my day!

QOTD: I can’t remember the number but it was a pinot noir show where you talked about the “pinot noir slot machine” where you either get veggies or poop. Incredible.

Hey GV, long time no comment… (watching on Ipod is a bummer, can’t leave comments) but made the exception for my QOTD answer: #700, yes that is my favorite and I’ll tell you why:

    1. The real show: If you look at episodes 1-20 that is the essence of you. Passionate about handing out knowledge, left and right.
    2. Good, unedited content: not editing is one the most important things about your show. Being candid and passionate, with editing, would suck.
    3. FREE CONTENT: you realize you could easily charge say a dime a show and at least 50,000 peeps would pay, yet you still decide to do it FOR FREE… and you never, ever send us to your website (winelibrary) to buy stuff, you even ask us to go to your competitors sometimes. That sir, is great.

    best,

    RR

Great show Gary. I hope some cali wine makers will watch this episode.

QOTD: the freezing cold crazy tasting outside the store is definitely up there, but I have to say, the most memorable show would be… the very first one I watched (around the holiday season of 2007 – can’t remember the show number, but it doesn?t matter). I vividly recall thinking to myself — who is this nutjob yapping about wine and the jets at 100 miles/hr… but somehow I was drawn in to watch the full episode. and boy am I glad I did… I loved wine before, but you made me get into it even more. Keep up the great work Gary and best of luck with WLTV and all your other endeavors.

hey Gary, haven’t commented in a long time, I have been busy. Almost to my 21st, on September 6th, great job on the 88′ good year! anyway QOTD I really remember the episode and sequel #628 and #629 your guest was Nicolas Joly, he was a great guest! biodymanics and nature assistance!

No question, the most memorable episode has to be the tasting of all the different flavors in wine- a true classic.
I prefer episodes where a certain class of wines is compared,ie. zinfandels or syrahs.
    Keep up the good work.

Episode #238 for me Gary, I can’t watch you rip into that Voga Pinot Grigio without laughing my head off! ‘Let’s give it 50 God darn points….coz you get 50 points just for being a wine….let’s give it 48 points!’ Priceless
Any Vayniacs who have not seen this episode should do themselves a favour and have a look
Thanks Gary for all the pleasure you have brought and continue to bring to us all
    All the best

Great show Gary. For me, and I’m sure many others, it was episode 148, expanding your palate. I thought, this guy’s freaking crazy! And I sent it to a bunch of people and have been watching ever since!

  • Wonderful show. Congratulations on getting to episode 700. Thanks for sharing these wines and your memories.

QOTD: Episode # 148 with the palate training was very entertaining for me. It was one of the first episodes I watched, and I’ve gone back to it even though I haven’t worked my way through the all of the archives yet.

    Congratulations again.

I posted an earlier comment with my response to QOTD, but upon further reflection. . . wanted to add something more.

GaryV, not only do you provide entertainment and a source of knowledge for me, you created a social network (primarily via the forums) that has become quite important in my life. I’ve made several local friends and quite a few long distance ones. I’ve been involved in wine tastings, dinner parties, seminars, and just fun backyard get-togethers.

Thank you for the time, energy, and money that it takes to provide an online space for all of us on the forums. I really do appreciate it.

And Mott — thank you for taking care of (and putting up with) us over there!
