line of the day – ‘Big blackberry flavours exploding on my nose like a grenade’

Barnstorming episode featuring GV at his best. When he goes on about the nuances of different vintages his knowldege is scary. The visible wince when trying the last wine is classic Gary, and sticking the wooden box on his chair as an Oak Monster substitute made me laugh. A classic.

Nice Gary. Very nice. I’m sure you sacrificed quite a few comments in the end (and probably a few views too) by keeping it classic, but I’ve got to say, it feels REAL nice to go back to some classic action every now and again.
That being said, at first I was going to answer the QOTD with sake first, then cheese, and finally absinthe when I thought a little harder (on second – well, fourth – thought, cheese definitely wins though; your cheese guy is the BOMB! bring him back again!)
And then I remember your episodes with your father (no lie, a few tears drippy-dripped on the last one.) Yup. definitely the best. Can’t beat some father-son rivalry/love.
So. Interesting. Your regular, meat and potato shows don’t get anywhere on my list, yet I’ve really missed them. Balance is where it’s at, I suppose. And we need MORE of it Gary! Make us wait a little between guests, schedule that stuff out (maybe filter more guests out?) We’re all here to see you first and foremost baby! ROCK IT, 300 MORE, LET’S DO THIS!

congrats Gary keep on destroying pronunciations(always cracks me up) and doing what you do. I, like others, really enjoyed the episode with Jancis Robinson. Her laid back authority was a great balance to your enthusiasm.

Nice going on the 700th show!

QOTD: I haven’t made it through all the back episodes, yet. Days and days worth of material, there. But so far, 148 is the topper. So unique.

Congratulations Gary! more to come later

    700! You’ll knock down 300 no problem..

QOTD: Im thinking the Joly episodes right now.. just visited the loire a couple weeks ago.

  • Congrats and great episode, really cool that you brought out some older wines. Too bad about the oak monster. The shout outs were a nice touch.
Qotd: My favorite episode will always be tomorrow’s. The day there is no more wltv I will be very sad and I hope it never happens!

Congrats on making it this far, Gary! 🙂

QOTD: while I’ve enjoyed many of your episodes, the one that I’ve watched more than once (in part because its the one I show to friends who ask about WLTV) is #182.

Good show and congrats. Your reaction to the oak is classic. keep it up.

Congrats on 700. I am sure that 1K will be a walk in the park from here.

It is a shame about the redonculous oak. It just goes to show that too often producers are focusing on the short term and not the long. But what do I know I never spend more than $18-20 a bottle so I am not buying old stuff either 🙂

QOTD: I never remember the numbers but the two that come to mind are the one with the two idiots who thought they where funny but where very much NOT is memorable to me as the worst episode I have seen. For best I think the two parter (?) with the lady from food TV (IIRC) was great. I also REALLY liked the Sake episodes.

I think number 700 could be your greatest episode. This is your Thriller.
QOTD: #122 Because you panned, absolutely panned! the 2003 Opus One and Joseph Phelps Insignia.

Loving “The Game” tear drop reference. Shout out from Inglewood CA. Holla!!! Also the Oak Monster ran thru this episode like Godzilla thru Tokyo! My favorite episode so far was Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky getting the full load on ala W.C Fields! Keep it HOOD thru episode 1000!

If you remember back to the old days (show #1), you asked me to throw some comments your way. Do you remember how often you used “interesting” to describe wines?
    Congrats on #700

    Phil
PS: had a Mouton 82 and L’Arosse 82 in the past couple of weeks. There not getting any younger so time to drink ’em up

gabe conte is the coolest episode. congrats on 700

QotD: My all time favorite has to be Episode #278. We were asked to pick wines for the show and my suggestion was picked. It was a wine I tasted and brought home from my honeymoon, the 2003 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Asinone” and you raved about it, giving it a 94. It was a nice moment for me and if I had money I’d have cases of the stuff. I have had it at restaurants since, but I still haven’t opened my bottle… it’s for our 5th anniversary.

QOTD: Any of the blind tastings episodes, I really liked the one in which you did the “other states” guessing whether a wine was from Ohio or PA. Funny.

  • QOTD: Without a doubt, Episode #380. When you gave the 8th grade Vayniacs advice on befriending the tall, skinny, awkward girls because they’ll “swan out”… so awesome.

  • Congratulations on #700. I hope you continue to crush it for another 700 episodes!

QOTD: Too many to narrow it down to a single favorite although the most memorable on was probably the one where you ate the chili pepper and the dirt. Still not sure which was BEST but that was certainly the most MEMORABLE.

  • quaffed

    qotd: ep. 148’s flavor-blitz.

The oak monster rides a Grecian zebra.
