lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

Gary, I know everyone has their own palate, but your score on the Mount Eden was outrageous. When Parker, Spectator, and Tanzer all rate that wine 90 points or higher, and you rank it a mere 69 points, I think there’s something fishy goin’ on. I’ve had that wine for the past three or four vintages and I think it’s one of the better California Chardonnays on the market. I think either your palate was just off yesterday, or there’s a conspiracy going on. 69 points?!?! C’mon Gary, you’re gonna start to lose some fans with crap like this…

  • Blind tasting, while potentially embarrassing, is the fairest way to taste wine. And I’m impressed that you were able to read that misanthropist’s comment without laughing. I personally would have called his mom and told her what her son has become.

    Side Question: 13 (birthdate)

QOTD: 1999 Atreus Brunello di Montalcino. 90+

Good episode. Like the blind tastings. The wine I had yesterday I would rate 92–the Finger Lakes Treleaven dry rose from cab franc. Rated 87 the one I had Sunday–Jules rose from Provence.

Great show, Gary. The blind tastings really rock the house. I love that you and Parker were so far apart. If the wine in dispute weren’t fifty bucks, I’d love to go taste it and see whose palate most closely matches mine. I expect I’d be closer to Parker on this one. The Oak Monster and I are maybe not pals, but we’re at least on speaking terms. I’d still rather watch your show than read WA (with no offense to RP).

Favorite number is 10. The foundation of our system. Just move the decimal. Close second: 0. Can’t have a decent number system without it. Just ask the Romans.

QOTD: For the first time in quite awhile, I had no wine this entire weekend. Not even Friday. I score that zero points!

Love the blind tastings…and for the love of God…embrace your Russian DNA.

QOTD: In honor of finishing my vacation in northeastern Spain last week, I drank the ’05 Edetana (from Terra Alta) on Saturday night. On day 1, I have to admit to being a little disappointed–a lot of fruit, but but all in all an awkward mishmash. Drank the rest last night (day 3), and liked it much, much more. Overall score, an 88 after some air time. But it paled to the wines I drank in the Priorat a week ago today (shout outs to Clos Martinet and Lo Givot)…that area is a superstar.

Oh…and most planted grape has to be garnacha. At least that’s what they told me in Spain last week.

    Gary!!!

Great show. Lots of wine. Straightforward blind format. Fantastic! THIS SHOW MAKES ME WANT TO TRY NEW WINES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THIS SHOW MAKES ME EXCITED ABOUT FINDING TREASURES WHERE I LEAST EXPECT TO FIND THEM!

QOTD: 2000 Chateau Le Crock. I would give it 86 points. Decent, but I believe it might have been drinking better a few years ago. With ABSOLUTELY NO BRIGHT FRUIT AT *ALL,* it was as though someone took a bunch of old brown leaves, crunched them all up, and dropped them into a barrel of water in which an old leather saddle and an old used pair of leather boots had been marinating in for months. Interesting, but not all that enjoyable on my palate.

  • This was an epic episode, gary! You said “nuts in my mouth”, made a will smith reference, and compared a wine to your babies backside. Keep it up, and don’t fight that russian dna

gary, regarding the Mount Eden, don’t you think the sequence of your tasting has an impact on your score? if i taste two white burgundies or non-CA chardonnays in a row, then go right to a CA oak-monster, it will affect my palate.

like you, i prefer chablis, sancerre, etc.. but if you try the mount eden in sequence against other CA chards, it might score better than 68.

QOTD: domain de la cadette bourgogne blanc vezelay 07

21 is favorite number (Roberto Clemente)

Normally drink red but had a 2004 Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay Robert Young Vineyard Reserve that I really did not care for. Would score it 82. Oaky and not good. I have had other vintages of this that I liked but this was not good.

Loved the blind tasting format–do more of these!

  • You should have read the last comment dissing you first, not last. It completely affected your energy for the show, or maybe it was because Mott wasn’t there? Still liked it though and great job for nailing most of the wines blind, it really shows the quality of your palate.

LOL at the 20:15 mark the guy in the green shirt covering his face with the paper.

Side question: Mine is 5 as well. Hammering Hank on the Tigers and it was the first multiplication table I mastered (x1 doesn’t count).

Drank a 2007 Wellington Roussane and give it 88pts.

Great Ep.! This was clearly the most shocking blind tasting EVER on the Thunder Show… mostly for you, but also for us. Just goes to show you how many parts of the world are real players in the premium wine game.

QOTD 2: 2007 Domaine La Grange Tiphaine Clef de Sol Montlouis S? Loire Blanc

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!

  • Gary,
Good show always love to see the blind format… especially double blind, hope you do one of those soon. I am not sure why you read that negative comment but I almost turned off the show. I do not need to hear a racist making ignorant statements. I know you are open minded and that is a good thing, but let us read those kind of comments so that we can flip to the next one without giving it the time of day. You are who you are and we love that about you… No worries mate! By the way, I had a 2005 Volver tempranillo from Spain that was absolutely stunning. Rich and smooth, good fruit concentration, excellent with the BBQ. I give it 94 points, not bad for a $16.00 wine! Favorite number is 13.

    QOTD1. 13, lucky number.
QOTD2. Many wines. Things that stood out:

2005 S de Suduirat dry Sauternes, 92 points
2002 Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre, 90 points
2001 Faustino de Autor Rioja, 92 points
2003 Idus de Vall Llach Priorat, 90 points

That guy with the ethnicity problem sounds like he needs to be checked by a psychiatrist for a Freudian complex. Hitler hated the Russians/Slavs too, that’s why more than half of the total deaths in WWII were Soviet nationals.
