lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

Awesome show Gary, really enjoy the blind tasting’s.

“This kind of almond, hazelnuts, nuts in my mouth are very exciting…ya I said it!” Hilarious GV.

Most widely planted grape? Is it Grenache?

    QOTD #1 – 93
QOTD #2 – 2001 La Torraccia di Presura Arcante IGT Rosso – inspired from your Super Tuscan Tasting – Scored 92

    1. – HAPPY B-DAY LIZ! If she’s married, then we can’t say Lizzy V., as that would be your wife!

    2. – You can’t, and need not say it; we can say it for you… Hey Didec: Go take a long walk off a short pier. You’re the one who sounds all psycho – analitical and pedantic….As if… talk about agression… Winos who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw bottles.

Gary, yer Jerzy love and style rules the roost. Keep up the great work, friend.

    3. – By now, much of the Vaynernation knows of the Spanish Arien. But I’d like to add that, most planted grape may vary every few years, per trends and demands. When I began in the wine industry around 20 years ago, Rkatsiteli (Russian grape!!) was guessed to have had the greatest worldwide plantings….

  • Chris F.

And no I didn’t google it,although I do believe I learned that from you Gary!

First time posting on here… been watching your show for about a year now.
    Most planted grape…. Granache??
    Favorite number… 7 (i know it’s popular)
This weekend drank one of my favorite white wines… Pio Cesare Cortese di Gavi 2007. My absolute favorite though is Pio Cesare’s Langhe Artese.
Love the blind tastings! Thinking about maybe organizing one myself with some friends one time.
LOVE your show and look forward to watching it every day!

Still trying to figure out how such a gap could exist between two critics/tastings. I trust GV but that doesn’t mean I don’t trust RP.

QOTD: Williams Selyem 2006 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley. 92 pts, WE.

And I made a mistake my all time favorite is Pio Cesare Langhe Arneis not Artese… oops.

  • QOTD: I think it´s Airen, because I searched for it about a year ago. Am I right?

I’d like to give a shout out to 1,234,567,890 and a googolplex. One has it all and the other is so large that it overflows off the radar. Also, pie > pi.

I had Pascual Toso’s “Estate Bottled” 2008 [100%] Malbec (Mendoza-Argentina). It was decent enough, so I feel the low eighties is fair. Nothing to write home to momma about but it’s chug-ability scores quite well despite the tannins.

  • Whooooooaaaaaaa Nellie Bell! These are my fav shows and when you are 30ish points away from the guru I would maybe worry too. Hell no, it’s “your” palate as you say and who gives a rat’s butt if the two of you differ.

Great show, I love the brown paper bag. Reminds of me of my Dad many years ago.

    QOTD #1: #5 Brooks Robinson

    QOTD #2:

    1) 2006 Quinta de Ameal Loureiro (Portugal) 90 pts (your recommendation)

    2) 2004 Flowers Pinot Noir (CA) 91 pts

    3) 2008 Nobilo SB (NZ) 90 pts (you recently rated this one)

    4) 2007 Horton Viognier (VA) 84 pts

    5) 2007 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma (CA) 85 pts

Again, great show. Of course the SA chard won’t be available! 🙂

    Cheers!

    Hi Gary,

Love the Brown Bag episodes!! Can’t wait for more!!!

I had an interesting week. I traveled to the Finger Lakes in NY for the first time and discovered many decent wines (also some horrible wines). The standout for me was the 2006 Sheldrake Point Riesling Reserve. I scored it 91 points.

Love the brown bags. Good to see Hamilton Russell performing well today – I’m a big fan of their wines in general.

QOTD1: My favourite number is 17, as is my wonderful girlfriend’s – one of many coincidences that helped bring us together in the first place.

QOTD2: Chateau de la Roulerie 2007 Chenin Sec and 2005 Chaume – the first was interesting (had a peat/whisky element that was very weird) and very drinkable (87), the second had good intensity but could’ve done with a little more acid to balance the sticky sweetness (89).

Keep up the good work. No matter how hard you try, you can never please everybody (which I find very sad). And happy birthday to Liz, of course!

Gary, some people just cannot handle strong personalities. Our vast differences is what makes it so interesting. I have a Czech friend who, classic example, many people cannot stand. But I love him and his gruffness (not that your gruff).

A very delicious chardonnay for the Vayner to seek out: ’07 Scott Family Estate, Arroyo Seco, Dijon Clone. Very rich fruit, satisfying and palate coating glycerin texture, just a touch of the butterscotch and oak flavors, but not overdone(I just despise over-oaked wines). High rating 90-91 and only $14.50—Thu, Thu, Thu, THUNDER! Hint: Costco had it….

  • I think your tasting really speaks to the value in wine. Many people so many times look at price as the distinguishing character to determine whether a wine is good or not. Also, this episode speaks to the wine critics who rate wine. We are not always to believe them, as they too don’t represent MY palette. I have been disappointed in many Mount Eden Wines and I’m not surprised to see it score so low. It has always been a highly rated wine, so many think it should just always be rated high. I like that the new world did so well. I like pure, well made wines! I really like what you say about trusting your pallet. Great show.

Very good job again Gary. I wonder how many shows your detractor has watched. I once told you to lay off the speed a long time ago. You are definitely a type ‘A’ personality, but you are very consistant, and I love 90+% of your shows. Keep on keeping on. Smell it first. TR

QOTD #1: 17..my b’day which is friday and the big 45!! OUCH!!!!!
QOTD#2: Palomina Barbera (Santa Barbara) 2006-having not had this before, a glass was poured at the restaurant-smelled and tasted pruny and stewy-no way this could be a cool climate barbera-sent it back and asked them to open a new bottle-now that’s more like it-nice fruit, some herbs i couldnt pinpoint, went nice with the pork-87.

The night before opened a 95 L’Evangile for my friend’s b-day. Decanted only about 30 minutes. No mistaking the nose for Bordeaux. No signs of age on the color-deep ruby. Beautiful Pomerol i think is still a bit young. Tannins were tart, almost sour cherry. I love Bordeaux, for me a 92….curious if this will improve or not….if you are not a bordeaux fan than this is not for you. Interestingly I think Parker scored it similarly….

  • Great show Gary. The blind tastings are still my favorite shows and I love it when you disagree with major critics.

QOTD: Had a few last weekend but my favorite was a 2006 Noggle Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc from Lake County. As a proud Californian I hate to admit that Cali Sauv Blancs have been on my s**t list for some time now (along with Cali Chards), but this one really gave me hope. 91 points if I was going to rate it.

Favorite number: 12…which also happens to be the number of bottles in a case.
