That label makes it look like a $5 bottle. Buying based on the label makes a lot of sense. For the most part, the better wines in my cellar have nicer labels. Don’t hate.

Elyse Zins, epecially their moriselli vineyards Zins.

    QOTD:
Least, oh I would have to say white zinfandel…
Best, Tumbling Tractor, since I grew up on a farm it was probably the label that did it for me.

As a long time lurker, Isaw what I saw and went back and chjecked again and ther was NO sniffy/sniff with the 2005 Porter Bass for shame. Just like yrs ago when I had a bottle of Piels beer with NO brewmaster number on the lable—Bert was very upset and told Harry to shape up!!!(circa 1961). Another great ed. show was greatly appreciated.
QOTD; A long time since a Zin will have to head there and stimulate old memories
    Keep up the great work!!!

Most favorite: Turley – can’t remember the exact ones
Bunch of least favorites – haven’t had a memorable one in ages – about to give up on Zin.

Good to have you back Gary! Loved the show.
QOTD: Best 2005 Armida Maple Vineyard Zin. Not sure on the worst.

i dont drink enough zins. . . i should start. while i do that you should get that package deal started for a sniffy sniff glass and wristband. missed you over the weekend gary hope you had a good one. ive been waiting for a zin episode for a while now. havent had alot at all but the reputation i hear this type has for big deep red robust bottles has been attracting me more and more. thats how i like my wines but i dont like lots of oak. i had the Botromagno 05 primitivo a few days back and enjoyed it quite a bit. i will make more of an effort to try more. ive been trying alot more “off the radar” type of grapes. many great finds. lots of wine from W.L. thanks.i hope your little bundle of joy is doing great im sure she is ! best best wishes to you and yours. see ya on number 707.
    were changing it remember !

now I can remember my worst zin: the ’02 Meeker Dry Creek Valley Winemakers Reserve . I had it in 2008 & it was the biggest piece of oak I have ever drank.

QOTD: Favorite wine (up there for favorite ever, in fact) that’s majority zin is Orin Swift The Prisoner. Favorite zin labeled zin is the Bogle.
Least favorite, although I tend to like most zins is the $5/bottle Barefoot cellars, although for $5 it was certainly serviceable.

  • Good show today Homey. I like the all work no play thing. Did you win in Vegas?

QOTD: I like the single vinyard Turley’s and Martinelli’s. Gotta love that Jackass. The worst……hmmmmm. Don’t really know about that. I forget the bad ones real fast….lol

  • Todd Fitter

Great to have you back Gary! I loooooove your Zin shows!
I’m also a huge fan of The Prisoner by Orin Swift. Maybe you should do a show on Zin blends, I’ve been asking for that show for a while.

    Pleeeaaaasssseeeeee…….

You neglected to sniff the Porter, next wine comes up, I quote, “This has a much more interesting nose.” What the f*&^? Your credibility took a huge hit on this one, Gary.

QOTD: Seghesio, Old Vines, worst is Bogle

Suggestion: Blind tasting where you know the wines going in, and then have rate them and guess which are which.

Embrase your inner oak monster. Great show!
I had De Rose Zin yesterday at the winery and was blown away. I don’t even like zin much.
Some of the blends from Ridge are sort of meh. I think it is a mood thing or a food thing or a humidty thing or a lack of cab thing or I wish it was a merlow thing or I just had a bad italian wine thing or I need some cheese thing.

  • Best: dunno – not really into high-end Zins. Used to enjoy the tasting room at Ravenswood.

Worst: Had a Norwegian zinfandel once that was grown on a hillside overlooking the fjords. The winemaker matched it with pickled herring.

Great show. I think we can forgive the Neyers for not having that “extra something special” – I assume you were looking for a solid tannin structure that would indicate some aging is possible? I don’t think there is anything wrong with being an outstanding drinking wine. In fact, I think, for me, it brings more value to the table because I lack the patience to age my wines.
