lines of the day – ‘point to that Supernerd over there’ and ‘It’s like when you don’t go to clubs anymore and you go to lounges’

Would’ve scored much higher but for the poor sound quality of the guest. She’s either got a very, very small voice or there was something wrong wih her Mic. Mott tried to step in and help but didn’t work. Shame. The bar looks like a great place to go…one day perhaps.

What a great show…GV, now all we need is to see you live at a wine fest in Germany.

QOTD: I love German wines…and wish that we had more selection available here in the US. I was stationed in Darmstadt from 1997-2000 and that was where I found my love for Riesling & German wines.

Riesling was my imtro to wine. Been drinking them and enjoying for 40+ years.
Last franconian was in 2001. Hard to find but graet wine.

Fun show and once she adjusted her mic had no problem hearing.
After doing a show with such a lovely lady do you have to go home and be extra nice to your wife 😉

QOTD: One of my favorite wine memories was on a trip in Germany stopping at a pub by the Rhine and getting to try a ‘flight’ of about 12 German whites (this was long enough ago I don’t remember the varietal) that ranged from liquid sugar to so dry it was sucking moisture out of the air.

I really liked this episode. Great guest, great theme. I want a televised show here in the U.S. where we pick a wine queen. That’s a pageant I might actually be willing to watch.

Great job with the hand-held, Mott, but I think you guys should make it a habit on the road to do a proper sound check before you roll. Not that hard to take the extra five minutes.

QOTD: Riesling is one of my all-time favorite varietals. I just got a great deal on some JJ Prum 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, and I’m going to be hard-pressed to give it the time it needs. I may have to buy a couple of older vintages just to have something for drinking in the meantime.

  • Loved everything about this show…the guest, the topic, the high energy, and mott’s thumbs-up approval.

QOTD: I’m all about German rieslings, and consider myself part of that third tier segment of wine-nerds. Only suggestion would be to drop a little more knowledge about the Pradikat system, etc., which can be very confusing compared to the AOC-type systems that most are familiar with.

I have more Rieslings in my wine cellar than any other varietal. Germany by far makes the best…..MSR area my favorite with Rheingau next.

Great show….I loved your guest, unfortunately, she was a little hard to hear.

    Keep up the good work.

    Pretty cool!
    An awesome and elegant queen!

QOTD: Riesling, respected as one of the top white grapes and Germany is like it’s motherland…I’d prefer a nice elegant, dry mineral play where there’s terroir and where the grapes are able to speak on behalf of where it came from. Not so much the ‘dessert’ styles, where lots of others assume rieslings to be sweet.

Well you have unseated the prettiest girl to be ever be on the show. The German Wine queen is gorgeous! I would rate her, 92 points. Would have been 91, but that burnt or toasted walnut call on the third wine, gave her an extra point!! Pretty and a wine nerd, doesn’t get any better. Great show, despite the noise in the bar.
QOTD: I am not into german wines or reislings, not because I don’t respect them as a serious grape or varietal, but because I have too many varietals and regions that I am learning about right now that I absolutely love. I am a red drinker primarily. But I will get to Germany and Reisling, I just hope that the QPRs are still available when I get there.
PS Thanks for the Wristband!!!! My wife is now really worried, and disturbed. Lookout for a Pic, as I took one of possibly the youngest Vayniak around and will be sending it soon.

  • Thanks for bringing out the Bocksbeutel. I lived in Franken for two years and would love to see their wines marketed more widely. Unfortunately, the locals know just how good their wines are, and so they drink most of them right there. Franken wines are hard to find even in other regions of Germany. Glad you highlighted a Riesling from there. It’s the furthest north wine region in old West Germany, and so Riesling is barely able to grow there. But when it does . . . Great show!

Great show! Keep the German/Riesling shows coming — The Queen is my 2nd fave guest behind Sasha.
QOTD: Riesling is my favorite varietal. German Riesling in particular is wonderful and a great value. It’s complex, versatile and interesting with great acidity – can sip or stand up to food. I could drink Riesling everyday… oh wait I do!

Danke schoen! Vielen Dank, dass Sie, meine schöne Königin.

Great ep, poor audio, but def. worth the trouble. You know, truthfully, there’s very little Frankonian bocksbeutel (bock’s bottle – purported to be named for the shape of a goat’s Scrotum!!!) wine in America. And most of that 95% of America wouldn’t even dig it either – def. not on first encounter. They do tend to drink drier, and that earthy/ clay and cheesy mustiness is a bit of a challenge, esp when aged. Try to avoid older wines from this area, and also stick to riper styles like GV did here, and you’ll do ok.

QotD – I love many of the wines of Germany, and not just the noble, kingly Riesling! Before I’d spent most of 3 months there, I’d had no idea how incredible the entire country and it’s people are, from the world class cities of Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, etc., down to the lovely idyllic villages. In USA, many of the greatest small family producers are represented by Terry Theise, who is clearly a GENIUS. Gary, get Terry Theise, or someone from Michael Skurnik Wines!! Danke!

    Great Episode.

One of the better episodes with a guest: great scenery :-), great length (i.e. not too long) and great concentration (mostly about wine).

Once again, as is almost always the case with episodes with guests, the sound level imbalance renders the episode almost unviewable. Gary is blasting away – *no* problem hearing him; but we can’t hear the guest. I could barely hear her QOTD even with the volume turned to max (had Gary talked when I had it turned up it would have destroyed my speakers). I think you need to mike your guests.

QOTD: love German wines – especially rieslings but what out for their up and coming reds: Rotburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelders.

Gary, you need to get yourself invited to the next German wine queen competition.
Maybe you should promote one in the USA also.

Love dry German wines, although one of the first bottles I ever bought back in the early 70s was a Blue Nun Liebfraumilch.

  • Robin C

I like the fairy godmother look.
QOTD: I lived in Berlin for 5 years(as a child) so I am very fond of Germany. I would love to go back for awhile. However I lean toward Alsatian rieslings. I am open to German wines, but they need to be dry.

Gary, first, you piss me off. You can’t call this stuff you do a job. How much excitment and fun do you get to do. She was a wonderful guest. (I think maybe I’am a little jeolous – or maybe alot!!)

Next, I am starting to build some German Reislings into my cellar. I find them much more exciting.

Also, you are going down on the next cruise. I am working on my ping pong game. BEWARE!!!!

QOTD: Gotta give it to the Riesling.

Over the years as I have tasted many different wines, I find myself gravitating more and more towards German riesling. Besides being great with a wide range of foods, I just love that first glass when I get home from work. I look forward to the riesling as a little reward at the end of the day. Regarding particular rieslings, the two best I have tasted this year were: 2004 Willi Haag Kabinett Brauneberger Juffer and 2005 A.J. Adam Kabinett Mosel. Both were reasonably priced and really brought the THUNDER. A fun show. You can do German riesling often and it will make many of us very happy!

Such a cutie! I wish we could have heard her!

QOTD. I don’t drink enough. My friend Nico has been telling me about amazing reds being produced there, not just Pinots, but also Bordeaux varietals. But I guess we don’t get those here in the US.
