  • Catching up on some episodes after a couple days w/o WLTV. I was super excited to see a show about pizza. That was until I watched it. This guy may have been worse than the “Cork Screwed” guy.

Gary’s QOTD: Either something really classic (e.g. Pepperoni) or BBQ chicken pizza.

Ouch. Kind of hard on the guest Vanyacs… It’s still free content so the hate is a bit out of line imo. I love the gman but I think the interview could have been better. Show could have focused on the guest’s pizza knowledge with Gary adding comments about how the wine interacted with the different slices. We got very little of that. In fact, it wasn’t until the guest asked Gary if the wine tasted differently with the different pizza slices that Gary addressed that point. Pretty much the main thing to bring out in a pizza/wine show I would think. I’m wondering if this show was a biz deal – Gary’s media company helping the guest on the promotional side and the pizza/wine show being a part of the deal. It’s possible Gary did not know the guest didn’t or wouldn’t drink the wine until just before the show and it threw things out of whack a bit. Gary, with all your talent and personality you should strive to bring out the best in a guest and that didn’t happen here. Anyway, I’ll take the occasionally awkward show with all the good shows that get pumped out.

The pizza fold is weird to me, but ive lived west of the Mississippi my whole life.
Sorry Lapp, EPIC FAIL! But its Gary’s fault too. Its one thing to not be knowledgeable about wine, but its unacceptable to not even like it and still show up on the show.
Gary, PLEASE let this be the last time you have someone on the show that will not even taste the wine.

I have to agree with the majority here. It was a dud of an episode. “Eagleputt” brought out some good expalations why. The fire between you and Gary just was not there. The topic (pizza and wine) has an awful lot to explore and virtually nothing was touched upon in this episode.

It’s o.k. Out of 715 episodes, it will happen.

QTD 1: I don’t drink pinot grigio, so i would not be the best to answer.
    QTD 2: Pepperoni and mushroom.

Love your shows. This one not so much. I like the idea behind what you were doing but I would prefer to see someone who actually enjoys wine to be on the show. I have an idea, how about I fly to your place and you can have an amateur who loves wines to taste with you.

  • To The West

    What the hell was that?

Seeing “pizza and wine” in the title had me all stoked about the episode initially. Unfortunately it turned out to be the worst episode ever.

A bunch of people have hit the nail on the head:
    – guest with little experience/interest in wine
    – not much “pizza and wine” content

It really should have been three wines already proven to be pizza wines picked before hand to serve as a teaching tool for the viewer

Assuming Gary realized the episode was going to go sideways it either should have been ditched or set up to be even mildly more successful. Not being impressed with the intentions (or football preference) of the guest didn’t merit ignoring him sitting there for the a good portion of the show and panning much of what he said.

Guest = 50/100 for dropping a stone of an appearance
Host = 50/100 for being at the mercy of the guest and not being able to spin it

Most everyone expects more. However, in 700 plus episodes one is going to bomb and we are still very lucky to have this amazing free content to view on a regular basis.

Bring major freakin’ THUNDER during NYC Week and we’ll be forgetting about #714.

I have no idea what everyone is complaining about…that crack about the carpet not matching the rug was hilarious.

I assumed there was going to be some talk about the pizza (the tray had slices from different places, right?). I think Gary forgot to do that part, kinda like when he forgot the sniffy sniff a while back.

I actually LIKED this show. Yes, the guest was a dud, but there have been a couple worse ones. What I liked was Gary’s performance. I thought he was particularly charming today. But pizza without cheese…

Huh?! What does this guest have to do with anything related to wine?

I love beanbag chairs and would love to come on your shows to talk about different types for chairs good for enjoying wine.

Gary, I have to say this show was a total dud. Besides the guest, who had nothing interesting to add or share and was only there to promote himself and his web developer, you barely touched on the pairings. Why not talk about what makes a good pairing work, why you think the verdeho enhances the food, or what sorts of synergies you’re looking for. You have so much knowledge, but this episode shared very little. Sorry bro, gotta call a spade a spade.

WOW! He’s awesome! A ‘pizza-savant’. Pleeeeze somebody do a re/mix with his comments plugged in, like Vince Schlomoe, the Shamwow guy has on youtube.

QotD – smoked chicken and artichoke hearts on pesto! Wild variety mushrooms and carmelized onion w/ truffle oil.

I really would have liked to have heard more from the guest w/r/t how one goes about dissecting and scoring the components of a pizza (tying that in to the wine pairing some how). He seemed to have wanted to get into it, but GV never gave him a chance. This show came across as if there was something in the background we [the viewers] weren’t privy to. As if the guest had done something to really piss-off Gary before taping, and this is the retribution. Sorry to say, having just watched the great Heidi Barrett episode (off a high), this comes across as something from a WLTV showing from a bizzaro universe where good is bad and nice is rude and …

Gary was not interested in the pizza issue… he wanted just to eat it.
And the guest was awful, he was not into wines, just wants to sell them with his pizzas.

    Gary!!! Wut id iz?

Vayniaks must love the long ball, but every show cannot be a home run. There are singles, doubles, triples, walks, balks and even strike-outs. They’re all part of the game! Personally I think it was a two bagger, I was just curious why the guest did not taste the wines(?).
Maybe he forgot his ‘DOLPHINS’ spit bucket!!!

Lapp’s AOTD: Papa Mio See No Pinot Grigio
    Gary’s AOTD: Sausage and Pepperoni

    PS – KWAY-LOOD

  • Your guest made me feel dirty with his attempt at using you and us (your community). I’m all for promoting, but shit– you have to give something to the conversation and the community. This guy was just a taker — and therefore he came off as a dick! It was funny watching you restrain yourself.

Maybe next time. The idea of pizza and wine is great. It served me very well in my dating days and even more not that I’m married.

Maybe try the idea again … just make sure you vet the pizza dude better. In total … I love the guests. They really make me feel that I’m getting to peek behind the curtain into the world of wine.

    peace out.

That guest was a huge tool… Bad bad bad guest. Please announce the blame for the person who casted him in the next episode. Someone has to take responsibility for that moron being on WLTV.

What wine goes with pizza? Was not answered! Give the Pizza guy a clue, a glass and his own spit bucket. He can’t be as dumb as he sounds. Try Jasci Montepulciano D’Abruzzo and Brick Oven Red from Puglia with your pizza.

Dude, how much of his website do you own now?

This guy was such a taker and a boring individual. Keep your chin up and leave these Bozos to their own devices.

Love the low buck stuff! How about some American varietals soon. Maybe Ravat 51

  • QOTD: Meat, just about any kind, and vegetables, just about any kind.

I have to say, I like a nice primitivo or chianti classico with my pizza. Will have to try a Verdejo sometime though. Open to change.
