As always the blind tastings are the best …even if the wines suck. Who cares?

Wow, I missed being poster #1 because I wanted to listen to the eipsode in time before I went home from work!! Oh well.

Weird for the blind tasting to have the IDs on the player so I could see what you were drinking at the time Gary. But I refrained from holding the mouse over them, so I could be suprised at the end 🙂

    Love the blind tastings!!

We all know that his fav wine was the prized Cheval Blanc.. lots of merlot there.. He meant mediocre Calfornia Merlot.
Please…stop blaming hollywood for the fickleness of the American public and the crappy lazy winemaking of lots of Califronia Merlot.

Haven’t seen every episode yet but was this the first corked wine on the program?
A blind tasting episode with a guest wine taster would be interesting..Robert Parker maybe? hah

top ten! Duckhorn is probly the best I’ve had, but usually have to pay 50 bones and some years are better than others. 2nd best is Castello de amorosa in Napa from the makers of V. Satui but also in the 30 to 40 dollar range. The Warnke Merlot form your buddy at WLTV was awesome for 10 bones free shipping a few moths ago. I need more. Worst, don’t remember. Too much hippy lettuce for me.

Yes, having the IDs on the player ruined the surprise factor for me. I was rooting for the Duckbill the whole way.

QOTD: Best QPR without a doubt Capolan 2005 at Trader Joe’s “(no longer available) $3.99. 90 pt effort. Couldn’t buy enough! Closeout wine.
    Can’t remember the worst.

ps. Certainly hoping some of the 2005 Bordeaux St. Emilion & other Right Bank’s take over top spot when they are ready.

my 2nd comment. Just had to get that top 10 one in there 🙂

I noticed you had to have someone get you a pen again before the tastings began! 🙂 ha I think you are batting 1000 for blind tastings and not having a pen with you. But its all good.

I loved the silent intro. Totally thew me off for a minute.

QOTD: Worst merlot was Blackstone Merlot :*( YUCK! The best was a 2004 Chateau Greysac, Medoc.

    Jason

  • Woohoo! Merlot is one of the reds I haven’t had a whole ton of and don’t know much about. Excited to watch this episode and learn a little! Way to cover all the bases Gary!

Holy Crap a corked wine? I don’t remember the last one of those! It’s been a looooong time. Was just telling one of my buds that the belief that 8% of wine having TCA is straight BOBO. Best and worst Merlot eh? I’ve been doing some bugdet drinking lately, best and worst I’ve found was Fat Bastard Merlot 2007, was pretty drinkable, not bad at all…and Chateau St Jean 2006 was like drinking the bag out of my wood planer. My buddy at Tularosa Vineyards 2007 Merlot is pretty damn tasty right now, lots of red fruit, and a balance of mint, and basil believe it or not.

Thanks for keeping it real man!

P.S. anyway we can keep the names from popping up on the progress bar on BPB episodes? I like others said, like to be surprised with the unveilings.

Fun to see when it all goes a bit wrong.

QOTD: I had a very nice italien merlot a while ago. Worst is problem some nasty stuff served at a party.

  • Too bad about the wines, loved the episode anyway!

Dutch comedian Youp van ‘t Hek destroyed Heinekens Buckler brand in the Netherlands after mocking Buckler at one of his shows back in ’89. I guess it’s not just an American thing. BTW, is it ok to talk about beer on this site? 😉

I thought the 2006 Robert Karl Merlot was the most exciting wine that I have ever drank. Really! very, very exciting… like baseball.

The best: The 2004 Boudreaux Merlot
    The worst: Hard to say!

Great to see you getting some shows in that fit your bill Gary. It’s nice to see you getting excited about the shows even when the wines don’t perform as you’d like.

QOTD: Earlier this year sometime I had a 2002 Northstar Merlot from Columbia Valley that I was very impressed with. As for the worst…I’d have to say three blind moose.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAW, MERLOT in da Hizzy !!!!!!! 🙂
Can’t wait to watch this one !!!!!!

    Gary,

I think this show could be a new tasting note for you. The next time you have an off-balance wine (especially a Merlot) you can say it’s a little “show 718”. It’s always fun to watch you freewheel when things go wrong though and I think the blind tasting format CRUSHES IT regardless.

I love Sideways as a movie but seriously; the day I start making choices based on a snapshot of the life of a movie character IT’S ALL OVER!!!! There are no inherently bad varietals, there are no great vintages, there are no perfect scores… There are only badly made wines, great BOTTLES of wine and most importantly, the perfection that occurs when a place, the people you love and a great bottle of wine come together. That’s 100 points – PERIOD!

Keep up the awesome work and I hope your knee gets fixed soon.

QOTD – Worst: Erased from memory – Best: Terra Andina (in terms of QPR).
