As always the blind tastings are the best …even if the wines suck. Who cares?

  • Something you showed me me ignore the stats look at the bottom line. Your family is well, you have food in in your larder and wine in your cellar, life is good.

GV on the roulette table now that’s fun, bet you win more than you lose

“Serious on the back end like jalo” if any one missed that go back and enjoy in the best descriptor ever!!!!!

Greg gets a hard time. I like him not saying anything in the game I want to WATCH THE GAME 🙂

Cutest person in a six person town I’m killing myself my belly hurts from laughing.

You rock bring that thunder to London

QOTD: Merlot, I’ve yet to be blown away, good be rarely great

whoa Man – that was one of the strangest wltv shows Ive seen in ages!! It was slightly refreshing…
You don’t hear a hell of a lot about merlot these days – its kinda still on the outta. I find first time wine drinkers and the female demo tend to sway more towards a merlot rather than anything else..why?? Im not sure

qotd…Cant remember! Its been a while since Ive tasted a Merlot

To reset my palate between big Cabs, Zins and Clarets, I’ll have a few bottles of Red Rock Merlot a year (Only buy it when it is on sale). Speaking of resetting palates; the rinsie rinse clears the Big Ass Glass but how does the taste left in your mouth from the first wine affect the taste and evaluation of the next one? Or does the chat between wines have the effect of clearing your palate?

great show gary, sucks about the wine quality, but sometimes it’s good to drink bad wines to remember that you’re lucky to be able to drink the good wines. 🙂

See that is why we don’t drink Merlot! Just kidding, however most Merlots just aren’t that exciting One of my favorites has been Rutherford Hill for about $15 they allways bring the thunder. The worst probably 2 buck Chuck

I actually enjoy shows like this and think you pretty much called it blind.
QOTD: I’ve found most california merlots to be very underwhelming. I haven’t spent any real money on them though. I find the bulk of them to fall in that category of “craig.” The fact that I can’t tell you a single best or worst sums it all up. Definitely not a wine that has won me over yet and I’m not sure I’m willing to shell out $40 when I could be buying something I love for that kind of money.

    Yup, I’m with Biznas. Re-do!
    Strangely fun(ny) show, though.

Very enjoyable show. GV, don’t know yourself because the wines weren’t 100’s. It is what it is.
QOTD: Nothing really that great in the Merlot catagory.

  • Gary wearing a tiara silver crown in episode #711 is a beut of a show. I rarely miss an episode, and glad I just found it. I am more of a Riesling or Champagne type. Passing on the Merlot. I like trying new things, but I dont think so, something else.

Good show. I tried the 2006 Duckhorn at their vineyard and also liked it.

I usually don’t buy pure merlot, so I don’t have a favorite or least favorite.

  • I understand your disappointment at the wines performing badly, but this is why people like you are vital in the wine world. You call it like you see it and don’t hide the bad wines, unlike so many wine critics who only promote the good.

QOTD – Best Merlot? 1985 Petrus, worst was a house wine called Golden Kaan from South Africa. It was so hideous!

  • QOTD- best: 1999 St. Francis Merlot Behler Reserve. synthetic cork. had in 2005, it was great. had two years later it was much more oxidized. still not terrible though.
worst – hmm have had a couple that were so horrible they went down the drain.

Very interesting show… I think Merlot should deserve a second chance sometime soon. Funny how all of the ones from Columbia Valley were a lot lighter in color. At least Duckhorn somewhat saved the day. Their 2006 Paraduxx is one of the best wines I’ve ever had.

QOTD: I don’t drnk a ton of Merlot but I love it in blends.

GARY! You need to do a blind Cab Franc tasting!

  • Am I the only one that caught Gary’s comment at the end?????!!!!!!!!!

“If there aren’t enough comments I’m out”.

Gary thats the second day in a row you’ve threatened to quit making shows. I know it must be rough to do these shows day after day, but rest assured we really appreciate it!

    Please keep making shows!

G.V.- discovered you at the beginning of this summer. Wine is really starting to click for me and I think your show has really helped especially #148. QOTD: Couldn’t tell you my best Merlot but the last one I had was from Quara of Argentina!? Good fruity value. Thanks for the broadcasting the passion!

QOTD: Best Merlots- Markham (2005-2006)and Rutherford Hill (2003-2005);cannot remember a really bad one, lots of very average Merlots out there (J. Lohr et.al.). Had the Duckhorn and thought it was good but not worth the money, only bought a half bottle- on sale! I like the Merlots that “impersonate” Cabs a little bit with dark fruit and some tannins.

Always love the blind tasting shows. A friend of mine has that 06 Duckhorn in his cellar so I’ll be sure to persuade him to drink it with me – your description of it sounded right up my street.

I’ve not drunk a whole lot of merlot, but I’m afraid I’ve never had one that really blew me away, nor one that massively let me down, so I can’t give you a best and worst!

  • Mr Cook

Despite the showing of the wines, I was laughing the whole time. It is great to nerd it up sometimes, it is great to promote a beaten down varietal sometimes, but most of all it is ALWAYS great to have a good laugh. Thanks GV.

GV & MOTT!!! Great show for me… sorry it was so bad for you! I was enjoying a nice Chilean merlot (Anakena 2006 Reserva) as the show started, so I’m like WOW, how cool is this! I think mine was better than all of yours. Mott, thanks for the “wet dog” on-the-nose observation. Couldn’t put my finger on it as I did the sniffy-sniff on the Anakena, but you nailed it! Wet dog for days!
QOTD: Best – “Black Vine”, 2007 California. Not great, but for $5.99 at the local wine warehouse, the best deal of all time!!! Worst: “Santa Ema” 2006 Chile. Yuck!
