Great show. I thought it was funny when GV got upset with Anthony for drinking his wine too early. HAHA.

QOTD: If I can be convinced the enjoyment and experience is worth $30 bucks or more I will drink more expensive wines. Sadly, many expensive $30 or more wines are just as enjoyable to my palate as an underrated 16$ wine.

  • About the comments dwindling, seeing as this is a 2 parter, I won’t comment until the 2nd part unless something really stands out and I cannot wait to comment. 🙂

enjoyed the show, i liked the guest and hearing more about people who are in the wine biz but aren’t necessarily winemakers!

QOTD: Besides money which is always a factor, before i buy a $30 bottle i’d have to have seen some sort of recommendation that it was good. i can be a little more adventurous and try new things buying $10-$20 bottles and not get upset if i have a bad one. when i’m buying one for $30, i have to at least know it’s a well made wine and worth ponying up the extra dough. i’d probably wait to hear a GV recommendation for a $30 bottle!

  • Excellent close to a two part show. Mr. Terlato should open up a wine school and share all those wonderful stories and knowledge.

QOTD: good one. For me to move from a $30.00 bottle to a $40.00 bottle would take a certain amount of risqué in the wine and payoff, I mean I like structure in flavors but I also enjoy sippy wines, that doesn’t mean I don’t stride for better or more expensive ones I just look for what’s in craving for no particular reason and for me to become a consumer of a higher priced wine it will have to have three basic things: it should have a bold aroma and color, it should be snappy with surprising flavors and palate, and it should be consistent or congruent in later vintages, if a wine is just more expensive and it has not performed on par of what’s considered an upward curve than I don’t even bother, there are lots of wines to choose from and I think that is ultimately the idea, to try new things and not just summit on one particular type, brand or vintage.

    Cheers !

  • At around 19mins, Gary, you should’ve just shut up and let the man speak. 🙂

Many thanks for these two videos, Anthony is a pleasure to listen to. No false modesty, normal guy that did it and enjoys it. Great experience to hear about.
Also great story about you changing the wines in your store, brilliant. 🙂

    Gary,

I’ve seen many of your episodes but this and part I were very frustrating and disappointing to watch. You interrupted the guest every few seconds with NO good reason and with LOTS of off the track questions that could have been asked when he had reached some kind of closure. After all, it is his stories that I was intrigued with in these episodes and he was not deliberately longwinded as some guests can be. The tasting was secondary in this kind of show. If you intended for this to be just one 30min episode and wanted him to hurry along, you should have let him know ahead of time. It is highly distracting and makes me think twice about spending an hour watching you with a guest again.

Hope that you will be more thoughtful about some restraint next time. Remember that you are like the “oak” or, in this case, “garlic” for the guest. Granted it is your show but I find it disrespectful to invite someone with such a history and not let him tell his story.

    Best regards,

  • Very interesting and pleasant two episodes. Incidently, this last week I had a bottle of the Terlato Chapotier Shiraz – Viognier. I must be honest and say that I did not like it very much. That particular blend is not that simple to put together. QOTD: I’m finding it more appealing for me to spend $30 on a bottle of Australian wine. Australia is exploding, and I believe that it’s possible that climate changes are benefiting the Southern hemisphere more than the Northern wine producing lands.

    Massive Thunder,excellent shows!

QOTD; It’s all about the quality of the wine, you try some 30 buck wines that suck so next time you see a 30 buck bottle you pass.

You have to try them bottom line and thats whats tough when you’ve had a really good wine @ 15 or 20 bucks.

Answer, go to as many wine tasting as you can.

  • hasbeen

    What a lovely guest.
QOTD: I already buy those wines. I think the key is consistently finding wines at the upper prices that bring enough so that they still seem to be a value. Or as GV would say, “Bring the thunder.”

QOTD – For me to move up to higher priced wines they need to consistenly provide me with significantly more pleasure. Sometimes they do, but often they disappoint. And most of us don’t want to spend that much for every day wines.

Fantastic guest. I really like hearing about the progression of the business from someone who has lived it (and been quite successful). Thank you both so much.

qotd: I do buy some $30 wines, and what motivates me is the hope (or knowledge if I’m familiar with the wine) that I will get a more complex, unique, thought provoking experience. Outside of certain categories (Champagne, Barolo, etc) I expect that $30 wine to deliver quite a bit of enjoyment, otherwise I’d rather drink a slightly less interesting wine for significantly less money.

As expected, part deux delivers in spades. Thank you again G and Mr. Terlato for sharing your knowledge and history.

QOTD: It should be a wine that hits my sweet spots and leaves an impression. If a wine makes me smile and has me pondering about its depth and complexity…chances are I’m buying more of it. Yes, I am influenced by scores and reviews. Also, I agree that the more outlets that become available to me, the more I will either pull the trigger on a pricey wine or stay clear of it. And, I should be able to afford it. A big problem with the upper tier wines is the people buying them that probably shouldn’t, ie: don’t buy cases of wine that you clearly can’t afford when you’ve got other responsibilities.

QOTD: Having better descriptions of the flavors that the wine maker intend to produce with the wine. Just so you have a better understanding of what you are getting into and it would give better context to the wine.

First off – LOVED this episode. What an incredible guy!!
QOTD: I hate to say it, but if I knew I was getting a $30.00 bottle of wine for $15.00 – not all the time, but a couple of times – I think that would do it for me. Well, it already has. My wife and I went wine tasting earlier this week down in Newburg, OR and bought some $30.00 bottles of wine because they were amazing! We’ve already had one with dinner earlier this week, wow?

    great set of episodes.

QOTD: I would buy the $30 bottle knowing it wasn’t $18 3-4 years ago. Prices have been soaring for so many regions and it’s a shame to find a Chanti or something that was $15.50 before getting a massive press score and then doubling in price.

    Thanks , Mr. T, G…

I think that Trevor Mast’s Mt. Langhi Giran is great, and I really dug those Alderbrook Zins, and Gewurz. , oh, a dozen years ago. And Chimney Rock was about the Elevage…

QotD – 1. a job w/ a decent income. 2. let’s say Merlot, for example. You say $20, I say Michael Havens. Once upon a time, it may have been Quail Ridge, or somethin like that… $30, I might say B.R. Cohn, for example, or Selene. So for me, nothing performs as well as smaller, individual producer, farming their small modest sized production that’s not part of an industrial sized operation. But as stated above, you have certainly, and continue to do good work, and bring and represent a number of fine products. We thank You fro your best efforts, and wish you continued success, and good health! Thanks for your time with Gary and us!
