line of the day – ‘$110 Cabernets from California are about as exciting as getting punched in the neck with a brick’

GV unusually very diplomatic when obviously not too blown away with the guest’s showcase wine. Steered the interview elsewhere and didn’t score it. Second of a two-parter and although better than the first part, a bit too much name dropping and patting each other on the back for me to be get excited

Again – what a nice guy. QOTD: Difficult question. I think knowing that you were paying for a unique bottle of wine that could’nt be replicated by anyone else – a wine with a sense of place and also taste/quality that could’nt be copied or manipulated – an individual wine maybe.

  • sheesh, got back way late last night, had a busy day, and could not get to the rest of the episode until now. Well worth the wait. I’m wondering if the wine students at UC Davis are required to watch these shows…they should be. Absolute wealth of knowledge and experience. Shrewd businessman, down to earth gentleman.
For all those that are perturbed by GV’s tendency to interrupt, just remember, he is sometimes handicapped by his excitement, and try to think about what you would be like sitting next to a person of Mr. Terlato’s character. I’m usually a pretty good listener, but sometimes you just get revved up. I just bent the ear off the northeast distributor for the Alois Lageder wines (really nice Lagrein Rosé) last night, and my wife had to remind me to let other guests talk to the poor guy.

QOTD: more tastings, and chances to sample…for those of us that do not roll so deep, great wine can be an expensive to bank breaking proposition. It helps a lot to know what to expect. That said it always worth gracing special occasions with fine wine. Reverse question…what will it take for the industry to make better wine in the $14 – $20 range. (As I ponder while sipping a friend’s nice home made Chardonnel).

    Gary:

A very good 2 parter. As others have mentioned, I would let the interview flow and not feel the need to inject your thoughts. Mr. Terlato was very informative and yes, he has had a few lucky breaks.

QOTD: Why is it that prices need to go higher to get better wine. Why can’t the producers and their wine makers make a superb (read 95 plus point) $10 bottle of wine. I understand the factors of production (economics term) very well and how they influences price. Hobbies aside, in this world the LCP (low cost producer) is the ultimate winner, regardless of industry. A wine makers goal should be to make the very best wine at the lowest possible cost for the lowest possible price point. If this could truly be accomplished, it would do more for the growth of the wine industry and pleasing our collective pallets than anything else.

Gary, keep these coming, just love hearing their knowledge, passion and history. btw – can’t wait to get back to Napa to spend some more time at Rutherford Hill. Last trip ended up in the cave and enjoyed every minute.

QOTD – Consistency in the value of the price point. $30 because they think they can market it and $30 because it delivers the experience are two different things.

  • Nice causal insight into the history of Anthony Terlato. I would love to interview him at the Berwick Wine Company.

Fantastic gentleman. Very sharp for his years–never lost his train of thought, not a lot of uuuuuuhhhhhs in between sentences. Informative, interesting and a complete pleasure to hear his story.

QOTD: I’m already there. A raise in pay would help.

So your Cabed out so you didnt even rate Tony’s top wine?

QOTD: Im really not sure… i think im in Tony’s first category, cheap wine as long as it tastes ok. For family i will pay for a nice bottle, but its seems you can often pay two or three times the price and still get a so so bottle.

Nice episode, love the business side and stories about the old days

QOTD: to not feel intimidated when buying the higher value bottle of wine. Friends always say if I am buying a bottle of a higher value I feel I should know something more than the basics about wine. In saying that the $30 bottle of wine will be more of a regular purchase when society feels more educated. Technology for example we are all more educated over time as it is becomming more and more apart of our lives. As Anthony Terlato said Wine is becomming not just more popular but more acceptable. When wine becomes the norm in society I think the price of wine will natually increase.

Great show. qotd: More access to older vintages at local wine shops. You and your guests often mention how the wines you are tasting “need more time,” whether that be more time decanted or more bottle-age. If I’m going to stretch my wine budget to include more expensive options, I want to be drinking them when they are “ready” to maximize the investment.

  • qotD: to knew that I am getting what I paid for. I think a winery should in a “bad” year should sell there wine for what it would normally sell for not what the label sells for and in a good year sell for a premium but always changing. So I know that when I pay 40$ I am getting a 40$ not a 20$ because of a bad vintage. I mean I bought a 60$ Cornas that was sugarfied Grape Juice 1 Demensional rip off, I even let it sit a day to see how it tasted. Turned to Crystalized Black Olives 1 Demensional. Disappointing

  • QOTD: $30+ bottles generally come from wineries I have visited. Wine makers I have met. This primarily limits my $30+ range to Napa. When I get to do a barrel tasting and really get to understand the story of the wine, I am much more likely to repeat purchase their premium products. Currently, my number #1 winery that falls into the camp is Girard. A few years back, Pat Roney took the time to give me a personal tour and tasting. That relationship has led to quite a few bottles in my cellar.

  • Hey Gents

What a great show. So much interest and passion. Honestly a fascinating chap.

QOTD: How to make me spend more on wine? Simple screw-tops on premium wines – I’m not interested in investing in good wines to cellar and have them sealed with a cork and thus the chance of it being corked when I open it in 20 years time.

    Cheers
    Andrew

I agree with BurroBoy; this is a live unedited internet show not a Scorcese Direction. If Gary pitches in at times I’m sure it was only because he was pumped at having such a legend at the table – I defy anyone else to do a show like this for over 3 years. QOTD: I forgot. Age; I would pay more for an older wine if the quality justified it.

QOTD: I’ll buy what I love regardless of price. It can be $8/bottle or $80, but some excellent wines under $20 and I see no need to spend $110 for something that I can replicate for under $30.

Great to see Mr. Terlato on the show!! I literally live just around the corner from Tangley Oaks in Lake Bluff, IL and it was interesting to hear that Ernie Els and Luke Donald will be passing by my house next week. I wish I could grab them for a tasting at my little chateau as well.

QOTD…I hate to admit this, but in order to spend more money on wine at a restaurant, I would want an insurance policy that it was a good wine. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ordered an expensive wine at a restaurant and have been let down by the experience.

    QOTD: A better economy.

Gary, I have to hold a grudge on Mr. Terlato’s patronage of ANY Chicago sports team, too! A man with such extraordinary taste in wine deserves a better sports town.

i am glad that other viewers liked the show, I still think that guests ruin just about every episode of WLTV. I have never seen you look so bored gary. Also at 30 min, this really pushes the limit on how long viewers must spend in front of a screen.

QOTD: Buy wine at restaurants where you know the manager and they know your tastes. At my fav restaurant in Buffalo the manager might give me a suggestion to push my pallate but if I don;t like it, I don’t pay for it. I ten to like the suggestions and that helps me find new wines and reduce the guit on the pig price tag.

TO THE VAYNER NATION:I have had the pleasure of hosting customers and attending wine seminars at the Terlato Tangley Oaks World Headquaters in Lake Bluff Illinois for a dozen years now. The last time Tony Terlato was in attendance about 2 months ago. He is truly a wise and passionate man!! Thanks Gary for having him on your show!!
Regarding the QOTD, my old boss said it best,”You have to keep tasting wines in the $6-$12 category until you have mastered them.” Then move up a category to the $13-$20 level, then the $21-$30 level and so forth while reading and learning. Everyone knows what a McDonalds hamburger tastes like, probably blindly. You have to be able to do this with wine as well. Train your palate to distinguish what sets each category apart. Taste, read, learn. Taste, read, learn, etc.
