Lines of the day – ‘I am a legend. What you have to appreciate is I’m one of the greats’ and ‘I hate the package’

Phenomenal episode(s) and I agree with Karl (below) that these shows normally work best when the guests are able to match GV’s personality and knowledge. And Gary, you are 100% spot on, the label on that 2nd wine is a shocker.

QOTD: Nick, if the wine is selling, I guess the label is working and that is what counts from a business perspective. The label is unusual enough to catch my attention and get me to look seriously at the bottle on the store shelf, so I think it does its job. However, as others have already written, although the concept of spotlighting your daughter is fantastic, the execution seems less so. To me, the merlot-colored finger-paint concept is clever, but it overpowers the silhouette. Just my two cents worth.

This was an entertaining and informative show, and I will be on the lookout for your wines.

  • Great Part 2 after a great Part 1. Need that Cab on my table!

QOTD: I _NEED_ story, and the label brings part of the story, so I’m good with it.

Fantastic two episodes. This guy is like me in humor. Gary, if you ever have me on the show, expect this type of humor(yea, like that’s going to happen).

QOTD: Yes, I liked the label(now that I know more about it), but see Gary’s prospective on it, also.

    What a great two shows!

fantastic show gary. what a hilarious character. the show went so smoothly too becuase he moved it along with you, rather than being interrupted. good stuff. really good stuff. i’d rate this show a 96+ pointer.

QOTD:i like the label and the idea. but the silhouette of the girl is too faint, the colouring overpowers it. you should make it slightly bigger too.

have to get this guy back some time.

Great show…bring him back again! He does have the “skill set” you’re talking about. Really enjoyed it.

QOTD: Leave the sillouette and do something else with the color.

V Stereotypically Kiwi character, they say what they mean with lashings of sarcasm and wit. Nice insight into his career.
QOTD – Label is a little too Opus One for my liking, but i guess he said he copies ideas from the best…so that figures. Labels are hard things to get right so i think Gary was a little too harsh on him (with a pinch of salt)

I love the label, it’s very cool. It my mind it does not make the product look cheap. Nick could have been the best guest ever!! I’ve add the Forefathers wines in different vintages and they have all been great!

  • QOD: Nick I like the direction. If interested as a courtesy to Gary and an appreciation for you and your willingness to engage with Gary — in return giving us, vaynacks, a funny and memorable experience. Let me offer you my design services as a token of gratitude. I’ll take care of you or Gary, the Wine Boss, will send his cousin Kirl to turn me into an Australian — by putting me down under!

Take a look at my work — if you like want you see — then lets chat.

QOTD: Sorry Nick but I have to go with Gary on this one. Your a Great guy but stay with winemaking and let other people design the labels.

  • GREAT GREAT show GV! Love Nick!

QOTD: I’m with GV, that label is doing NOTHING for me. Good concept, just needs better execution. If you are in need of a good designer, I’d love to help you out! 🙂 GV has my contact info.

Always hustling GV, gotta Crush It!!!!!!!

  • Hi Gary,
Finally tuned in to your show. Really enjoyed your tasting with Nick. Also, I searched Santa Cruz Mountains, wondering what has been going on regarding our appellation on your show, and came upon the show on Clos la Chance. A note about Clos la Chance: It is not in the Santa Cruz Mountains nor are any of the wines you tasted on the show from grapes grown in the SC Mts. They are, however members of the Santa Cruz Mts. Winegrowers Association.
Would love to send you samples of Santa Cruz Mts. wines grown and made here in this really fascinating appellation. We have been making wine here since 1976. How can I get Ahlgren Vineyard samples to you, not having distribution in NJ?
Incidentally, really like the Heidi Barrett show. Val Ahlgren

    Awesome show Gary,

Nick is terrific, and best of all he did interrupted you as much as you did him! Kkkkkkk… 🙂

QOTD: Nice label Nick, although you could leave just a lined silhouette of your daughter on a purple square background it would look nicer. Congratulations for your wines and life.

    Best wishes,

    Mauricio Fernandes.

QOTD: I have nothing against. I can take it or leave it. The wine-color crayon etching over the daughter’s face is clever, but gets old fast.

I’ve had the Forefather’s Cab. A friend purchased as much as she could from a retailer that evidently mismarked it at 15.99 a bottle a couple of years ago. Definitely tasted 3-4 times that price.

  • I could see where Gary was coming from with the Cheapness factor of the label. That being said. I’ll never forget it now that he explained it was his daughter trying to color it in her self. I have 2 daughters, and I love Merlot. I’ll be looking for this wine on the shelf!
