  • Hi Gary!
    Now, to get really specific:

Paul: Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, artsy and evocative
John: Anything by Sine quo non, gutsy and slightly off beat
George: Clos Ste Hune, explosively expressive with a very dry finish
Ringo: Have to agree with John Farrin, Moet&Chandon, bubbly and showy but not very complex

Fun show, now wish I had invested in wine when I could afford to.

STOP INTERRUPTING!!!! IT”S REALLY ANNOYING AND ALSO VERY RUDE!!! DO YOU NOTICE YOU ARE DOING THIS?!

  • Good show although I still see wine as a drink and not investment but hey each to their own.
    As for the question, perfect!
John – Madiran/Tannat for the spice and raw energy.
Paul – Merlot – can be soft and pointless
George – Gewurztraminer – beautiful harmony and aromatics
Ringo – Cabernet Sauvignon keeps the beat in Bordeaux
    cheers

John= The extravagance and the party : a delicate champagne Krug
    George= the rock’n Roll wine : a Helyos Banyuls
Ringo= the self made wine a bit forgotten but always successfull : a rosé from Cotes du Rhone : la Montine !

I would have to say from the last guest, this guy is a bit boring. G.V. I can tell that you were trying your best to get this guy more into the show, it just wasn’t happening.

QOTD: I could see John Lennon as a Molly Dooker wine. Strong, powerful, and revolutionary for it’s time.

  • Gary, first comment. Love the show as I look at “collectibles” mostly antiques, and see how closely they mirror wine. Which is great because I love both. Your comment about “and some even get consumed” when you were talking about wine as an investment vs drinking it – really made me laugh. I can see antiques being an investment – but wine has always been hard for me. I have many rare wines in my cellar that now, because of there value, I CAN’T drink!!

Really nice episode. When you taking WLTV to your dad’s cellar? I think it was this Father’s Day episode that had an invitation.

    Qotd:
    Paul Sweet Reisling
    John Gamay
    Ringo Brut Rosé
    George Merlot

Probably a popular show, albeit not an important topic to me. Exposure and enjoyment are my priorities, as I’ve learned here. Your shows of late have been such a treat. I think the highlight was when Nick Goldschmidt said he was waiting for the punch line and motioned toward your eyes. How funny. And how cool to see the experts collide. Still learning about wine, thank you so much.

    QTOD:
Lennon Revolutionary Vinhos Barbeito Madeira Left field cool
McCartney Lover Clos Apalta Pure pleasure
Harrison Karma Chateau Bouscasse Tannat don’t come easy
    Starr Fun Tormaresca Simple pleasure

  • Why would you trust this guy for Investment wines when he doesn’t even know what he likes and how to rate a specific wine. All he is doing is relying on the Parker’s ratings and others to his customers. I see that as a problem. But if that drives the “Investment” community so be it. Tweet me on this if you get the post @dakotapaul

Great show…wine and money are inextricable in some ways so wine as an investment makes absolute sense. Adrian was a great guest, and he asked a great question!

The Beatles – Bordeaux because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts

John – Cabernet, because he is simply the best
Paul – Merlot, because he is soft and easy to understand
George – Cabernet Franc, because he is a great addition to a blend, but pretty darn impressive as the frontman as well (Loire, Cheval Blanc, etc. )
Ringo – Petit Verdot, because he adds structure

There are many directions you could go on this, but…
    John-Cab Sauv
    Paul-Merlot
    George-PV
    Ringo-Malbec
Each good on their own, but they play best together.

That looked very dark for a Pinot Noir. Are you sure it doesn’t have a little Durif in it?

I really enjoyed this episode G, much more so than typical guest episodes.

I can certainly see wine as an investment, and have learned a bit about it and Vinex through reading Decanter Magazine. Interesting stuff, but just not me. Perhaps if I was rolling heavy with a high 6-figure or 7+ figure income, then sure, why not.

For me, I’ve begun collecting wine (mainly Bordeaux) as an item for future consumption with friends and family, not to be traded or sold at a later date.

QOTD: Sorry Adrian, not a big fan of the Beatles. CREAM is my favorite UK band. How I wish I had been alive to see them back in their heyday.

FASCINATING show. While I don’t know if I’ll ever invest in wine
(I would drink it all!) I enjoyed the discussion, & enjoyed how it seemed you two were just having a chat in front of the camera & not trying to jazz it up for viewers at all.

(amazing) QOTD: I’ll do it by varietal:
Paul: Cabernet sauvignon: Legendary & aging well
John: Pinot noir: soft yet complex
George: Semillon: Oft in the background but shines when in the spotlight
Ringo: Chardonnay: Backbone for so much, also ages well
Peter Best: Gamay: Usually thought of when young

Gary, this is one of the areas of the wine industry that needs to be explored more thoroughly. I believe that when people buy wine, they drink too soon, whether they are cheaper wines or more expensive wines. I don’t think that many people realize that people can just spend a few extra dollars more and create an investment in something that isn’t as exotic as a rare car or something like that. While most people can’t affort the huge mansion or expensive sports or luxury cars or an expensive Rolex, most people can go out and spend their money on things like more tangible luxury items like fine wines.

Also, just a side note. I think that most people will agree with me that many of us only look at the score of the wine whenever they’re looking for wine (guilty). One aspect that was alluded to but not really mentioned is the fact that people need look at not just the score, but what the critic writes or says about the wine. Also, people need to look up how others scored the wine and what they say about it instead of what just one person’s score was.

Anyway, it’s just a thought. Great show Gary!! Keep up the great work.

Gary, I really thought you were going to pull through and do an Okanagan episode and sing the Canadian anthem…You broke my heart that pumps a weird mixture of wine and maple syrup.
I hope you can make it up to me and your neibourghs to your north.

QOTD: The Beatles are a blend all doing there part to balance eachother out and be really darn good.

  • Very interesting view, aspect and perspective of the wine industry. Another learning experience. Thanks Gary.

Paul: a Super Toscan. Full of style, grace, complexity, content and value, and very sought after.

John: aussy blend. Daring, breaking the mold, revolutionary, explosive, with a touch of genius.

George: Cab Franc. Dry, austere, old world, intellectual, adding structure and melody.

Ringo: Dom Perignon. Where’s the party? Keeping the beat, millions of tiny bubbles. Timeless!
