  • Very interesting view, aspect and perspective of the wine industry. Another learning experience. Thanks Gary.

Paul: a Super Toscan. Full of style, grace, complexity, content and value, and very sought after.

John: aussy blend. Daring, breaking the mold, revolutionary, explosive, with a touch of genius.

George: Cab Franc. Dry, austere, old world, intellectual, adding structure and melody.

Ringo: Dom Perignon. Where’s the party? Keeping the beat, millions of tiny bubbles. Timeless!

  • Adrian aka AnGkEr

Interesting show…slightly different from the other guest shows……wine investment something to look into.

    Great QOTD:
The Beatles blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot
    John – Cabernet Sauvignon
    Paul – Merlot
    George – Cabernet Franc
    Ringo – Petit Verdot

    Great show GV,

Talking about voices that impact the wine world, I truly believe that Jancis Robinson is a much more reliable source of information than Mr. Parker, that is a juggernaut like Gary said, but occasionally makes strange and suspicious moves. And of course Hugh Johnson?s books are the legendary.

Awesome QOTD Adrian, one of the best of all time!! Agreeing completely with Capt M, here is my list:

John: Mollydooker Velvet Glove 2007: Revolutionary, explosive, genius.

Paul: Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape 2005: Full of style, complexity, content (13 grapes), and value.

George: Chateau Angelús 2003: Intellectual, adding structure and melody.

Ringo: Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Rosé 2002. Where?s the party?

    Best wishes,

    Mauricio Fernandes.

  • This is my new fave Saturday morning indulgence – even tho I’m sipping a cuppa joe instead of a glassa wine. LOVE your descriptions – so articulate and real. Fun, fun stuff. As Arnold says, I’ll be back! (said in snarky Austrian accent, of course. Duh.)

  • Great episode, not biased about the guest just because he’s from England 😀

Definitely one of the better episode Gary! I really like the discussion at the beginning, this was a great way to start my day!

QOTD: I’m 24, I have no idea about the Beatles. The only thing I know is that Joe Cracker did an amazing cover of “A Little Help From My Friends,” and MJ owns the rights to their songs. I don’t even know the members. Well I know Ringo, but only because The Jersey Boys had a comment about them in their musical. Can’t answer this one.

Great show, very informative. I never really have looked or researched into wine as an investment, so this was a good eye opener. Thanks for the insight!

    Great show Gary! Great guest.
-QOTD I have owned every Beatles album in vinyl, eight track, casset and now CD. I do not have enough wine experience to select a wine that represents each Beatle though. Here is what I would recommend to serve them:
Paul – Willamet valley biodiversely grown Gewurztraminer. Like Montinore Estate.
John – Demi sec champaigne. Yes I’m serious.
George – Savignon Blanc with strong mineral and honeysuckle
    Ringo – Pint of Boddington’s I’m afraid.

alright.. we i would really like to get into the entry level of wine investment and any shows that you could do or will do will be greatly appreciated. so please keep up the investment shows (especially with the wines that have potential for growth from a $30 bottle to a $70-80 bottle if such things exist.

as for the guest i think he needs to try a little harder when it comes to wine. as the sniffy sniff is the most crucial and even though people can’t pick up everything that is the fun part..

Really interesting show. Adrian seems like a very intelligent, individual who has “crushed it” in creating his company. I found the analysis of the wine market as a financial market quite interesting and especially the influence of the critics in that respect. Very different show and I really enjoyed it.

    QOTD: Great question
Paul – I think Paul would be sort of a big Barossa Shiraz since he like writing those “Silly Love Songs” and people love those fruit-forward Aussie wines.
John – To me, John was a very interesting fellow, deep complex. So I will say he is a nicely aged classified Bordeaux – perhaps a 1982 Mouton.
George – George was kind of quiet and seemed to be a bit introspective. I’m not sure exactly why, but I think he would be a white Burgundy, perhaps a nice Chablis.
Ringo – Ringo seemed to be a fun-loving guy and since all I can think of is “Yellow Submarine”, I think Ringo would be an Italian Prosecco.

  • The topic, while I may not be personally vested, I can appreciate. As my wife works in the fine art industry, she has really changed my mind re: alternative investments to securities. I would have loved to hear about a sample wine portfolio. I can also see how some may be turned off by the notion.

QOTD: I love the answers from Severin and Adrian aka AnGkEr, as that Cab/Merlot/CabFranc/PV really echoes the members as individuals, as well as the stellar blend that makes The Beatles extremely palatable today. I haven’t played the new rock band, but I keep reading how insanely fun it is.

Very interesting show. I can’t fathom how much goes in to the investment aspect of wine nor would I even want to try to enter that game. Why? ‘Cause it takes the enjoyment of it – objectifies it, if you will.

Great QOTD. One of the best.

Paul: Aussie Shiraz. Deep, rich, and sometimes over top.

John: Alsatian Riesling. Introspective, sweet yet dry, leaves you wanting more.

Ringo: Merlot. Timeless, under-rated, good one his own or as the man in the back.

George: Cab. Franc. Some love him, some don’t, some don’t even know he’s there…but, the package wouldn’t be complete without him.

Great question. G, please be sure and read some of these answers….there’s going to be alot of really good ones. Thanks guys!

  • I just love the Brits, even while hustling they stay polite! Loved Gary’s comment that even the greats like Jancis Robinson or Robert Parker do not yet feel comfortable with Greek (white) wines. It is only natural, as these wines trigger a whole new range of sensations on the nose and palate. I openly applaud their efforts for not simply ignoring the wines, but rather start exploring them. That in itself is a huge statement.

QOTD: I know this will irk some people, but the Beatles would be Charles Shaw, with lyrics like “all you need is love”, “i wanna hold your hand”, “love, love me do”. These lyrics/band is bland, boring, and elementary at best. Just like Chuck Shaw…

I loved the guest. Mr Lenegan was one of the more well spoken guests you’ve had on the show. And although he’s where most of us are in the wine world, (not able to pick up certain nuances of taste and smell until they are pointed out) he’s very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to about big time wine investing and about the wine world in England.

I’m not sure i know the Beatles well enough.
George was always my favorite. Even though he didn’t have the charisma and charm of the two up front guys. His quiet style and smooth voice make him like a Burgundy, classic and stylish.

QOTD: John–an Unoaked wine–Naked Vines Chard–all natural, bio-dynamic, organic, GREEN, etc.

Paul–always singing about “Yesterday–say a cellar-worthy, aged wine–French for “Michelle” so a big 2000 Bordeaux made by Michel Rolland.

George-“Peace” wines. Because of Give Peace a chance and he is at peace.

Ringo–If he had Blue-eyes(I’m not sure, don’t think he does) Blue-eyed Boy Shiraz–Molly Dooker. Or something from the little-known ’93 vintage for “You’re 16, you’re beautiful and you’re mine.

As a group, a conglomerate wine, Four Vines, Forefathers(of music) or Earthquake Zin for when they first exploded on to the music scene.

  • Great guest, but I don’t like looking at wine as an investment. I know it is a bit hypocritical considering I’m a wine retailer, and I don’t mind people making some money from selling their wine (as I obviously do because I run a wine shop), but I just hate to think that these great wines will spend the rest of their time circulating around a series of investors and never getting drunk!

As for the question of the day, I’m going to annoy a few people here!

Paul – First growth Bordeaux, perfectly polished, highly prized and worth a fortune
John – Penfold’s Grange, moments of brilliance, but generally over rated
George – Jaboulet’s La Chapelle, when at it’s best it can beat any fine wine but goes through many ‘off’ periods
Ringo – A £15 bottle of wine, good, reliable and very pleasant on the senses, but really could be replaced at any minute and nobody would really mind!

    Have I been too harsh?!!!

From a collecting/investment viewpoint…Maybe you and Adrian could do a “structured” wine offering… You know, combine bottle’s of 98’s, 91’s, 87’s, 70’s, 66’s, 52’s in a single “collectors case. Sell it as a structured product for only for the discriminating professional wine investor — call is a collateralized vigne obligation (CVO) . You could even rate the CVO’s — AAA AA AA1 etc…

Sounds like a whole new chapter in Crush it II

  • wine as an investment is like beanie babies investments. Too volatile,I mean, someone removes the label, and you are screwed. haha.

I BUY expensive wine to enjoy. I BUY to add comfort to my life. That is what money is for – to add comfort to your life.

But good information and nice show.
p.s. I collected Match Box series, but my mom said I needed to organize,so she convinced me to throw away all the original boxes…huge mistake. smile. I had hundreds from the 60’s and now without boxes… like having Yellow Tail in your cellar. haha.

  • For the first time ever I saw how the high-end wine market could be compared to something like gold in terms of market volatility – and totally get why people would invest in it.

You mentioned women’s tennis and Oudin as having potential. Did you see what Serena did tonight on court?!! A very poor PR move on her part. (sorry about the sentence frag) This could have a different kind of potential for her brand.

QOTD: John: In your face but not always loveable, yet crazy creative, multifaceted: St. Emilion garagiste claret
    Paul: Warm, fuzzy, lovable: Merlot
George: Sensitive, introverted, thoughtful: Pinot Noir
Ringo: Let’s Party! Anything cheap but it must contain alcohol: Thunderbird
