Totally interesting show- the shark has been reverse jumped. Never heard of this and I love it! I’m going to do my best to search these kind of wines out. They almost sound like some of the older white riojas like those from Lopez de Heredia- which are amazing!

  • Nice short informative format, I like it. I don’t know these wines, but look forward to taste them, when the time comes.

QOTD: a very good question. The truth is the most unique wine I’ve had is one we made 8 years ago, from Garnacha and a local Zacatecas type grape, couldn’t tell you the percentages because there was a situation while transporting them but that is not the point, the point is that when the wine was ready, it had a Hawaiian Punch meets Amaro Ramazzoti mixed with a bit of whiskey peat but on the sweet side. It was quite good and the sad part is that the crush only yielded 200 liters, and it was all consumed within 8 months.

    Good episode.

funny I just had their 1988 chard not too long ago. There were signs of life on that one but not nearly what you were drinking today.

QOTD : hum, unique can mean so many things. I would have to say off the top of my head a Mont louis I had a couple months back. It had the oxidized quality but in a good way w/so many amazing aromas and flavors, really blew me away!

Could you please spell the last name of Steve (the gentlemen wine collector) mentioned in this episode. I always like to wiki people of interest…

QOT: I’d hate to disappoint you.

  • Gotta praise you for bringing out some interesting Chard. Its always disappointing when you land on Cakebread Copycat bulls**t in a tasting – this was refreshing.

QOTD: Uruguayan Tannat. Nothing too “unique” but it had a sausage casing, stuffed with dirt thing going on that my buddy and I really liked.

Its cool to see unique stuff on the show; makes it really interesting and educational for all of us nerds.

  • I love the new shorter format. Makes it more manageable to watch every day.

QOTD: I’m quite new at wine, so this might sound a little lame. The most unique was a no-name, no-brand vin-chaude that I had last time I was in Strasbourg. (It was a white), but the flavour profile was just through the roof (for me). Plus, nothing beats a hot drink at -2 (C) 🙂

  • My mistake. It should have been vin chaud (not vin-chaude .. apologies to the french for messing up their language 🙂 )

A good way to end the week GV.

QOTD: Good interesting Joly’s Serrant and Bad would be this very odd winery in WA near Col Solare where all of the wine had a musty red apple note on the nose and palate

Gary! Hm, Ill let you slide this time but I expect my Friday wine list next week! Good episode, unique chardonnay.

QOTD- I have to split it into unique good, and unique bad. The more unique good I have ever had was my uncles Riesling, it tasted very good apricots and peach and citrus, but the nose smelled just like the inside of a tomato soup can, when you just open it. and unique bad must have been from a local winery (sorry PA) it was called Matt’s mash and it was just horrible, the most unique horrible as it tasted like scum from the bottom of a boat mixed with rotting grapes and skunk cabbage.

  • First runner up: Domaine de Belliviere Le Rouge-Gorge, pineau d’aunis. Smelled like moss, tasted like it too.

Winner: Lopez de Heredia Rosado. Never had anything quite like it.

I like the streamlined format. These wines sound very interesting. Sorry to tell you though, the Saints are going to deal the Jets their first loss. That offense is just too good.

QOTD–I am glad someone mentioned Vin Jaune from Cote De Jura. It is am old established wine region in France, east of Burgundy, near the Swiss border. I had a tradition white wine that been purposely oxidized with a similar profile to the Black Canyon Chard. It was strange, but I loved it. It was great with some prime rib. Yes a delicious pairing of a white wine and steak.

  • Funky Chardonnay – never known this style of chardonnay until now!!! Thanks for bringing us vayniacs some nerdy wine knowledge.

Gary, totally know what your saying as in “nerdy” that’s you, that’s me, I want this wine, I will find this wine. Question of the day answer: I have to use a wine that I have had recently just because there are soooo many unique and different wines out there. 2007 LIOCO SONOMA CHARDONNAY, way nerdy, way cool, give it a shot.

    cool show
you must be exhausted. unless you’ve worn that shirt 3 days straight, that means you’ve been taping back to back to back shows. big props for that!
    interesting wines.

QOTD: a wine by T’Gallant on the mornington peninsula. It was a blend of (if you can believe me) Sangiovese, Shiraz, pinot noir, and muscat. Suffice to say, it wasn’t good.

  • QOTD: I tasted an older red my Dad had made once. The nose and mouthfeel/taste were fantastic and then the finish just went off a cliff and vanished instantly. One of the most unique wines I’ve ever tasted.
(I think it was grenache from California, but don’t remember the grape(s) exactly.)

QOTD: Bad: A Tennessee Merlot. The grapes were shipped in from California, and it tasted nothing like a merlot. They must have blended it with some of their local grapes, I’m not sure, but I do know that it was terrible.

Good: Some of the white wines I got to try when I visited Switzerland in 2007. Great stuff, that’s very unique.

    Good luck on Sunday.

That 1990 bottle has one of the most beautiful labels I’ve seen.

QOTD: I can’t think of anything I’ve had too out of the ordinary, but one unique nose was from a dirt cheap NY J Roget Spumante (bubbly) from my tasting note: “The nose is delicious, smells just like hot apple pie a la mode, with hints of cinnamon and believe it or not, cool whip.”

QOTD: Funny you should ask cuz one of the most unique wines I’ve ever had was a 1994 Kalin Chardonnay (napa) which wasn’t released until around 2007. It still stands out in my mind as one of the top three best wines I’ve ever had, and I’m mostly a red wine drinker. The straight out strangest wine I’ve ever had was a sparkling white nebbiolo from italy, yes a sparkling white nebbiolo! It reminded me of a solid blanc de blanc.
Great show, thanks for rockin it.

  • great show gary, thanks for educating me. I’ll be doing some research as to whether there’s some more affordable lees aged wine out there.
qotd: a few years ago had an aussi shiraz viognier blend that smelled/tasted more exactly like smokey meaty bacon than any other wine I’ve had has tasted exactly like any one thing at all.

  • Cool Dave

    Hey Brandon M.
I checked out the Urban Potato report and looking at the pictures I think everyone in the forum is over dramatizing the atmosphere and dirty conditions at Blackwood Canyon.
I live in Alabama and from my perspective it looks like some slightly sissy yuppies got a look at a real farm for the first time in their lives.
If Crazy Mike upset these peeps then I hope they don’t visit a dairy or god forbid a chicken or pork processing plant.
I mean do you think the people that pick the veggies you are eating wash their hands afet taking a dump next to the field they are working?

With love and laughter, just poking some fun and not trying to be mean,
    Cool Dave
P.S. Drink the wine Gary it won’t hurt you one bit.
