Interesting for the unusual wines featured and GV’s positive reaction to them. Nice

QOTD: the most unique wine I have had was at the home of some friends they had assisted the winemaker (not a professional winemaker) in picking the grapes, etc. etc. and in bottling the wine, so it was really their very own wine. I didn’t much care for it, but it was unique.

Nice show and a good question of the day,

Had this year a bottle of Canari (Bodega EL Grifo) Do Lanzarote 1997, barrel aged canary sack, a unique oxidised wine that could divide any room.

Hey GV good show, a suggestion for a show: why don’t you do a tasting of the 2nd wines of bordeaux grands crus ? Petit cheval, petit mouton, forts de latour, pagodes de cos etc. etc.
Would be interesting to see who is putting the best effort towards their more affordable wines, don’t you think ?

QOTD: to build on another comment, vin jaune from jura is a good example. Everything good coming from CA is a surprise to me.

I am not usually a fan of Chardonay, but these sound good to me. I like the oxidized, nutty, maple syrup wines.Sort of Port like.

QOTD- Bellview Winery’s (Lnndisville NJ, near millville) suprisingly tasty and different Dandelion wine. I’ve never seen a commercially available dandelion wine, only heard of old south jersey italians making it at home. Naver saw one of these either.

  • Great show, Gary!

I like the point you make about how each person considers the fermentation length a blessing or a curse. Hey,have you had a chance to check out Chris Riccobono’s site, http://www.pardonthatvine.com? He’s doing the video format, too. The wines are pretty varied. Ck it out. Oh, one thing, he’s a bit lower key that you are. LOL

    Gary,
We tourned a number of Eastern Washington wineries in July 2009. One quick stop was Blackwood Canyon Vintners. Suffice it to say, I would not drink their wines unless I had a recent tetanus shot. What came to mind was the movie Deliverance.

Hope you are feeling well after drinking their Chardonnay.

Fun ep; WA is making some interesting wines.
QOTD: Uhudler from South Burgenland (Austria) – banned at various times, but now legal in 8 towns. Some serious Jolly Rancher action with this wine.

QOTD – I had a wine in Florida that was made there from citrus fruit. It was not too bad, suprisingly.

When I was tooling around Oregon with my girlfriend, we stopped into Harry and David, and picked up the Little Black Dress Syrah Rose. It was the most amazing rose we’d had, and was very inexpensive. We’re talkin’ $15 a bottle. We can’t find it anywhere; not even on the winery’s web site. There’s a probability that we dreamed this wine; I’d call that unique.

Any idea where we could find this without necessarily having to visit Oregon again?

QOTD: Either the best Riesling’s I have had from Germany (no other country can get near there unique style) or a sweet “Coteaux du Layon” wine from the Loire Valley – sweet and refreshing at the same time, beautiful.

Wow, I have never had a Chardonnay I would have ever called out to have any Petrol on nose or taste, that’s interesting. I would have to say oneof the more unique wines I have had was not to long ago, a Valpolicella Allegrini. The method in which this style of wine is made is seen in a really fascinating tradition in this region in Italy. The wine had some dark fruits that came out of hiding as the wine opened up as well as some unmistakable Brett.

  • Pretty “unique” episode. I like it a lot when you nerd it up like this. In fact, I’m very ready and eager to see a Sir Gary Vaynerchuk episode, hopefully soon. It has been way too long since we’ve seen Sir Vaynerchuk. QOTD: not long ago I had a bottle of 1996 Chateau Musar Blanc, which was an orange color wine as well. I think that was pretty unique and nerd.

neat to see wines like this being produced in the US…didn’t know there were any like that on this side of the pond.

QOTD: Bull’s Blood (Egri Bikavér) from Hungary, or wines from Corsica at a Wine Festival in Grenoble, France. Not incredibly unique but different than wines most Americans have on a daily basis

I like when you nerd it up like this, perhaps Sir Gary is due for a return.

qotd – 2002 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Rouge “Cuvee Prestige LC”, a Pinot Noir apparently made only in select vintages, kind of tasted like an imaginary blend of a red Burgundy and a Willamette Valley Pinot, very interesting. I tried it a Loire Valley tasting a few weeks ago.
