Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

  • Glad to have you in Canada, Gary. Welcome!

Any chance you’d be coming to Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of your book tour? Lots of culture here in this city, including a great wine community.

Love Toronto as well. Will be there in 2 weeks for a conference. Long haul from the west coast.

Had the 2006 Girard Artistry tonight. Solid 90 points. Good firn tannins, with some oak and nice red berry. Finish that goes on and on……

I like the show from the hotel – fun idea.

Toronto is a neat city – go to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I love “Toron(t)o”, my in-laws are from neighboring Mississauga. Check out the Kensington Market, eat some “street-meat” (local lingo for the street corner hot dogs) and check out the LCBO with a vintages store (ie: Queen’s Quay). Montreal rocks, too.
Speaking of Ontario, I just had an Angel’s gate 2004 single vineyard Cab. Sauv. that was distinctly regional and pure Niagara terroir. I could have used a bit more depth and length but all things considered I’d score it 91 pts.

    Dear dear Gary,
It was great seeing you this evening at Indigo (Montreal). Terrific presentation. We finally own the book. You look fantastic considering the pace at which you fly. After the book-signing we fell into an excellent bistro, L’Aromate where we enjoyed a superb meal and a glass of Smoking Loon Viogner and an Alsace. Bill and I were so happy to see you here in our city. Congrats on everything that your journey has given you and allowing us to reflect the glow and just maybe “Crush It” for ourselves.
As for Toronto….that’s like the Giants to the Jets. Hard not to love our little Montreal. Love your honesty with the Cave Springs and eveything else.
    Happy Hallowe’en!

Haven’t been to Toronto in years but vacationed in Quebec last year – some delicious ice wines in the Eastern Townships, also a few decent whites here and there, still, not as good as I had expected, not, for example like the finger lakes with very good riesling…. Good berry wines, kiersch (sp?) bit that’s not my thing….

Several week lurker, first time poster. Your heartfelt pleas have swayed me Gary.

The wine shop I frequent holds free wine tastings, which works great for me as I am a 23 year with little in the way of disposable income. My friends all look at me funny when I say I like to drink wine. Considering the stigma surounding wine, that its somehow for ‘old’ or ‘rich’ people, its not too surprising. I am actually the youngest out of the regulars at the shop. Most of the others are retires or mid-adult professionals. I work in retail as a CSA.

The last wine I had tonight was a really big 07 cab, which was a little disapointing, but I’ll rate the one I had before it. Peirano Estate Red Shorts Red – A blend of 70% Syrah, 20% Petite Sirah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Viognier (copy pasta). I enjoyed it the most out of the wines I had tonight and I would give it about an 88-89. I might have something to do with the fact that I like syrahs, but hey whatever.

    On another note:
I tend to draw odd looks from people at the tastings with my desriptions of nose or tasting notes. One in particular tonight was a Chardonay that had a nose that reminded me exacly of the liquid inside a glowstick O_O. The wine company rep gave me look for that one.

CONGRATS ON THE #2 SPOT FOR THE BOOK, MAN!! (in advance). Your English teachers may have known your academic ability, but they underestimated your HUSTLE!!

QOTD 1) I spent one fantastic day in Toronto two years ago, an had a great time touring the Niagara Peninsula wine country as well!! Can’t wait to go back soon…

QOTD 2) A BIT NERDY HERE: 2008 Pascal Janvier Jasnieres “Cuvee du Silex,” Loire (Chenin) 91 — This is like a barely off-dry Vouvray with loads of acid, chalkiness mingling with lemon and clementine citrus notes, with subtle green tea and dandelion and white floral notes as well. Great single vineyard bottling from a craftsman of a producer in a practically unknown region north of Vouvray. (Gotta love Chenin…)

    Lurkers Last Wine:
Just turned 21 on the 14th, I’ve been watching for 6+ months so far.
I went up to a Total Wine in Jersey, from Pa. (I Plan to go to the Wine Library in the near future).

One wine that I got was a

    Edgewood Estate
    2005 Napa Valley
    Cabernet Sauvignon
    Alc. ??%

Paid about $20, found it to be really smooth.
I THINK this was a rated wine–91 if I remember correctly.

If I had to score, even though I have next to no experience, I’d give it an 89.
It’s the best red I’ve had to date, went really well with some pasta.

Looking forward to much more wine tasting in the future. I’ll have to do the tasting of food from the episode where you taste about 60 different things to show people how to expand their palette.

  • Michele Chiarlo – Barbera d’Asti 2006 – Amazing wine. Strawberry notes, with some cherry, medium bodied. Strawberry in taste and hint of vanilla (american oak? the website didn’t say).

I don’t really like ‘points’ in general so I give it thumbs up!

  • I’ve been to montréal during a week, and it was a killer! I loved it!
For the last wine I had it’s the castillo de molina viognier 2008 colchagua valley, my rating would be “dislike” just because it’s too hot for me and it has an enormous amount of nut flavor that I think is just too much.
Keep up the good work! Love ya!

QOTD: Canada is great. I have been their twice and loved it. Great place to be. The last wine I had was a Burgundy Pino. The nose was really amazing. Walnuts, Shiitake mushrooms and a little hint of Plum thats slightly rotten. One of the more strange noses I have experience but very nice.

Literally the last wine I had was wine number 6 at a tasting, rrp about 35 euros and it was a Pommard premier cru 2003, by Lescure called ‘Bertins’
It was pretty great, gave it 89-91 I think, but it was outshone by another wine that night; the 2005 Chateau de Chamirey from mercurey which rocked!

My brothers live in canada, I would go and visit them but one of them is married to a complete ‘witch’ (halloween reference)

great news bout the book GV!

  • Last wine – a Nangkita Vineyard 2008 Viognier from Madeleines. The Nangkita area is outside the mcLaren vale area and is a higher elevation therefore cooler. This wine is a beauty – 91 points. I had it with an apricot chicken curry – a wonderful match.

  • Fun little episode! But no women hiden in your hotel room anywhere? Hahaha. QOTD: never been to Canada (yet). Last night I had Ch. Ste. Michelle Merlot ’04. Didn’t rate it because that bottle was either heat damaged or somewhat passed its peak, or both. But the night before, I had ’05 L’Hiver Syrah, Mendocino, and I rated that a 91 pts.

  • Fantastic episode, GV! I definitely love the off-the-cuff hotel room stuff!

    Answers to questions:
    1) Canada is frickin’ AWESOME because I have family and friends there. I love the snow, and they get plenty of that!

    2) I’ve never been to Toronto, but I plan to visit soon!

    3) I’ve never tried wine (dun dun dun!), but my last piece of candy was a Murray Mint and it was delicious!!

    Lurker alert. My first comment.

Gary, would you please field this question? When a critic gives a $10 wine a score like 90, is that score compaired to all price point wines or just $10 wines?

QOTD: Toronto is a fantastic city. love the whole ducks, head and all, hanging in the windows in China Town. Good French food.

QOTD: 2007 Caymus Cab. Holy smokes, this wine is great. the french would say it has “Jeu n say qua”.

Gary, I think you can get more comments if you let the lurkers now how easy it is to leave a comment. Me, being lazy, never left a comment for about 3 years. I thought I would have to fill out a bunch of fields, start an account, pick yet another password etc…

    Anyway, Great Show!
