Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

As a former lurker, I’ve decided to respond to your plea to emerge. I’m quite new to the wine world, but I’ve been watching your program, and doing quite a bit of reading for several months now–I’d say by now I’ve watched a few hundred of your WLTV episodes (and loved them all!).

QOTD 1: I haven’t actually been to Canada, but I know a few people from up north, and they are some of the most pleasant people I’ve ever come across. That being said, I would certainly like to travel there some time in the near future.
QOTD 2: Just finished drinking a Dr. L (Loosen Bros.) Riesling. As I mentioned previously, I still don’t know much about wine. Based on what I do know though, I would probably score it 88 pts, I thought it had great acidity, a very pleasant peachy smell, and flavor that tasted exactly like a sour green apple (which I like), and a pretty solid finish.

I live in a rather small college town, so unfortunately my wine selection is quite limited. I’ve been eager to try some of your recommended regions (such as Portugal), but I’ve had little luck finding them. Enjoy your stay in Canada.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Nice “Maine Roots” Jacket. Thought it was a Jets Green one. The score will be 27-14. Hope the Jets are on top for it.

Haven’t been to Canada since Nova Scotia(mid-90’s). Don’t remember having wine. The time before that was summer of 1978. Niagara Falls and Finger Lakes, which I would love to do again. Closest epiphany to Canadian wine was a finger-lake wine I tried in the early 90’s. Herman Weimer semi-dry riesling, which you’ve had on the show. As far as Canadian wines, someone brought back a Canadian wine from the Niagara region. I don’t recall the producer, but felt very much the same way you felt about the Cave Spring, which is like putting Clos du Bois in any hotel mini-bar in the U.S.

QOTD: Canada is better than most people in Michigan would think. I loved Toronto. I went there when I was a kid and was blown away by it. Last wine I had was a 2007 Cab Franc from Forty-five North in MI. Great firm tannins, green/jalepeño peppers, strawberry, red currant…etc. I do no know if I could rate it, but it was great with my cottage pie. Great episode and thanks for traveling/being away from your family for us!!

Toronto is amazing city – for some reason, and I don’t know why, I’ve always had the best food in Toronto. Something about the way they cook up there is just better. Gary, this is my first comment ever after watching for a few years and I just want to say that I’m impressed by what you’ve done here.

  • QOTD: I have never been to Toronto. Vancouver was pretty cool.

Last wine I had was called Vivacious Vicky, and it was a little too hot for my taste. It was a little petrol-ie and I wasn’t crazy about it. I’d give it an 82.

GV, probably one of my favorite episodes in a while. Keep it simple.

84 is not great but still pretty good for a random hotel bottle.

Canada.. Haven’t ever been so can’t comment much. At least they do health care right (or wrong depending on your take) 😉

Right now we are working our way through an order from Wine.Woot. We got the “Boss Monster” 2007 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel (plus 11% Petite Sirah). Don’t feel comfortable giving it a score as I don’t know wine well enough, but >I< like it.

  • Glad to have you in Canada, Gary. Welcome!

Any chance you’d be coming to Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of your book tour? Lots of culture here in this city, including a great wine community.
