Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

Love these off the cuff, out and about episodes, really fun.
QOTD-1 Never been to Canada, would love to go someday.I know they do great sweet wines, didn’t think people rated there dry wines, must keep an eye out.
QOTD-2 Dona Paula estate Malbec 2007; delicous wine 92pts.

Haven’t been to Toronto since I was a kid and remember nothing about it except my dad getting into a fight with some guy because we called ourselves “Americans” and not “United States citizens.” I guess the guy was pissed we commandeered the term since Canada is in North America too. Whatever, there are assholes everywhere, certainly in the US too. Most Canadians I know are cool people, though they tend to smoke weed more than Americans. Go figure.

QOTD: My latest wine that I had was an ’06 Domaine Saint-Francois Santenay that I brought to a wine tasting. 90 pts and my favorite red Burg so far.

    GV,

Best of luck on the road. Maybe bring a Vayniac or two on upcoming flip cam episodes?

QOTD: Canada = awesome people. Toronto = Sky Dome…classic stadium.

If you think Toronto is a beautiful city, don’t go to Vancouver, you will never want to leave. But that’s ok, just bring Lizzy and Mishca with and you can open a sattalite store here and have the best of both worlds.
Last wine 2007 St. Cosme Gigondas. The jury is still out. I hope the next 3 bottles I bought today come through

GV… If you think Toronto is a wonderful, beautiful city you need to come to Vancouver. Vancouver blows it away in every aspect. I guarantee if you would have stopped by Vancouver instead of doing 3 signings in Seattle we would not have disappointed with the hotel wine. Okanagan is the wine capital of Canada.

    Leafs stink too… Go Canucks.

    We miss you too GV!

QOTD: Canada would be a paradise if it wasn’t so damn cold. Clean, polite people, free health care, more hockey on the tube as opposed to college football (boo).

QOTD: 2008 MontGras Reserva Carmenere from Colchagua Valley Chile

I’d score it 87 points. Worth the $8.50 I paid for it…nice nose, kind of an old leather belt funk to it, with a little white pepper. A little tobacco and dark chocolate on the palate…the only knock is that it doesn’t finish that strong.

  • Hey Gary,

Is that the Hyatt you’re in?
I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s pronounced CAVE (as in where a grizzly bear sleeps), not CAV.
Too bad they only had that wine in your room, you know there are so many better ones in Niagara (and the Okanagan).
Please please please try Southbrook from Niagara-on-the-Lake, amazing biodynamic wines!

Enjoy the rest of your tour!

As a former lurker, I’ve decided to respond to your plea to emerge. I’m quite new to the wine world, but I’ve been watching your program, and doing quite a bit of reading for several months now–I’d say by now I’ve watched a few hundred of your WLTV episodes (and loved them all!).

QOTD 1: I haven’t actually been to Canada, but I know a few people from up north, and they are some of the most pleasant people I’ve ever come across. That being said, I would certainly like to travel there some time in the near future.
QOTD 2: Just finished drinking a Dr. L (Loosen Bros.) Riesling. As I mentioned previously, I still don’t know much about wine. Based on what I do know though, I would probably score it 88 pts, I thought it had great acidity, a very pleasant peachy smell, and flavor that tasted exactly like a sour green apple (which I like), and a pretty solid finish.

I live in a rather small college town, so unfortunately my wine selection is quite limited. I’ve been eager to try some of your recommended regions (such as Portugal), but I’ve had little luck finding them. Enjoy your stay in Canada.

    Cheers,
    Nick
