Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

I have not been lucky enough to visit Canada yet. Though I have good friends who live in Toronto. So it must be a great city. When you travel and find neat wine in you hotel, keep doing these little shows. Super cool.

Last wine? Lanmeil The Long Mile, 2006 Floor Valley Shiraz, Barossa Valley.

I give it 90 points. Good with pizza and then chocolate chip cookies. The tannins really worked well with the pepperoni then the dark chocolate in the cookies.

Okay but…Chateau Briot $5 bones at T.J.’s …I don’t get it– incredibly average. People come and buy it over and over again. I mean really. How about calling it Chateau Boring. Take your pencil, scribble all over an aluminum baseball bat and lick it. Sure you could say it has a sense of place, but a place I don’t care if I ever visit again. With so many choices, why are they coming back for this???

Love Canada …….. oh wait ……….. I live there.
I just wish that when people visited they would expand beyond wines by Cave Springs, Mission Hill, Jackson Triggs, Inniskilin. There is so much more, but they are smaller wineries. Try Reislings and Pinot Noirs from Niagara.
Toronto is a great place, but so are so many other cities up in the hinterland.

Try some Clos Jordanne Gary …. single vineyard Pinot Noirs and decent Chardonnays.

  • My last wine was a Bordeaux, Domaine de Chevalier 2000. It was a disaster, I tasted this same wine a year ago and it was beautiful. Today, the tannins were absolutely not integrated, it has gone into sleep and should be open again in a few years. Or was it just a bad bottle? I love the Pinot Noirs from Canada and I have some of the Clos Jordanne 2006, Niagara. It’s a really funny wine, the nose prepare you to a Big Pinot Noir with a lot of complexity and the palate gives the opposite, a very light and fruity pinot noir!

    Gary,
Love Canada and particularly Toronto. Reminds me of the 10 years I spent in NY. All the ethnic neighborhoods and great restaurants and something to do every night. Jazz, theatre, museums, art galleries, great town.

I had a 2008 David Coffaro ZP2C and I quote from the bottle “The bottom of the barrel wine. Blended from the last four gallons of every barrel of wine each year to produce a delicious and balanced wine that is good for everyday consumption.” Very good 4 outa 5 stars. It’s the best place to buy futures at about 11 bones and a very good web site with the oldest diary/blog around by the winemaker.

ANDERSON’S CONN VALLEY PROLOGUE RED TABLE WINE 2006
90 – Very sweet tannins. Dry, but not a long finish. Good grip with the mouthfeel. When first opened had a wet sock smell but as it was decanted for over two hours that faded, revealing more of a cassis smell. Eventhough I scored it a 90 it does have a lot of character for a Napa cabernet.
Glad to see it has gotten better as I had tasted it about a year ago and thought it was not good.

I used to live just outside of Toronto when I was younger and I just loved the place. We used to call it New York City without the crime, but that was in the early to mid 80’s and I know it has changed a lot. The last wine I had was a 2007 gewurzts from Columbia Valley. It was $7.98 in the bargain bin and I really bought it to put in the french onion soup I was making. We weren’t planning on drinking it, but the soup only called for 1/4 cup. The soup I give a 92 and the wine I give 81. It was meh. Decent nose, but nothing great. The taste of the wine was very apple like and kinda creamy up front. It dropped off fast on the back end and had very little acid. Overall meh, but what can I expect in Kansas with the screwed up liquor laws here.
