Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

Nice short and sweet show. Congrats on the book, but glad the Jets prediction was off, as the Phins take the sweep.

QOTD: Canada is just a french wannabe, “blame Canada”

QOTD: Many wines were tried today, but last full bottle was 2006 Cameron Abbey Ridge Chardonnay rated a 92 (but that is a vacation rating so grain of salt)

Lurker Here, QOTD: Drinking a Carmenere from Chili, P.K.N.T. Silver Collection. It was on sale for $4.99 from my local supermarket so I just had to try it. And you know what? It’s not that bad!! 84+ Pts.

Canada is outstanding. Glad you enjoyed your trip Gary and thanks for the signed Crush It copy from the Toronto tour (a great early birthday gift). My girlfriend was super motivated and inspired by your talk.
Toronto offers pretty much everything and anything you could want, except winning sports teams at the moment.
Gato Negro, merlot, Santa Pedro Chile… …i’ve never scored a wine before, it feel very empowered now that you asked… …70 some bad tastes at the end.

  • As a Torontonian, and a loyal, long-time Vayniac, I have been waiting for you to do more about Canadian wines. I often think that the wines north of your border are maybe overlooked as being just “Canadian.” And whenever I travel in the US, I get the impression that Toronto is also little understood. I am glad that you bigged my hometown up and bigged our wines. Next stop for GV and WLTV has to be a trip to BC and to the Okanagen, where we really shine!

Last bottle: Mt. Boucherie Summit Reserve Pinot Noir 2007, from the Okanagen. A light bodied rhubarb, cherry play, with zippy acidity and a gorgeous almost coppery colour. Delicious. Thanks for 700+ and the Crush It! inspiration.

    Respect,

    Simon

  • GV,

Thanks for taking the time to speak in TO last week, it was a terrific talk. Love your jersey idea regarding the Jets!

QOTD: Toronto, or TO as we Torontonians sometimes say, is fantastic. So multicultural, so much happening every day, a real great city.

QOTD2: Enjoying a bottle of 2006 Rutini Trumpeter Merlot. My first rating ever…I’d say it’s an 88. The bottle before that was a 2007 No.99 Wayne Gretzky Estates Merlot, and it edged out at 90, b/c how can you beat The Greatest?

QOTD1: Only been to Canada twice- Whistler BC & Toronto. Had a great time both visits, but very different experiences. Went to Toronto in 1992 while doing a “college tour.” Great city, very clean. Got to see my beloved Sox play the Blue Jays back when the Jays were great. Went to Whistler in 2000 for literally the best skiing of my life. Anyone who loves to ski has to visit.

QOTD2: 2007 Strong Arms Shiraz South Australia- 86 points. Definitely over the top, but drinkable. Decent dark fruit. For $12, I was not blown away, but no disappointed.

Nice show again, thanks for taking the time. Maybe I will read your book, “Crush it”. The subtitle sounds interesting – from the point of view of a poor wine nerd 🙂

QOTD1: I’ve never been away from the european continent, but I imagine Canada and canadians to very much in line with Denmark and danish people. A rather responisible community in social matters. A rather cold place to live, where peole are down to earth, but perhaps also a little boring and/or melancholy.

QOTD2: 2006 Bisceglia, Aglianico del Vulture, “Terra di Vulcano”. Bought it here in Denmark for approx. US $10 – which is a great, great buy. I strongly suggest that you try some Bisceglia-wines from the Basilicata region! This is one of their cheaper wines but still worthy 90pts (and 2 glasses in the 2007 Gambero Rosso). TN: Red and black fruit – plenty of acidity balanced by a hint of yummy, sweet raisins. A little spice and leather – and a noticeable tannic backbone. Finishes soft – and with a little bite in the tongue. medium length.

last wine & rating: 2003 Margerum Purisima Vineyard Syrah, Santa Ynez, 91 pts. Really nicely balanced SB syrah. Margerum just has an excellent knack for constructing true expressions of Rhone varietals without the overweight fruit.
