line of the day – ‘Is it like, communism, for you in your mind’

Not the greatest chemistry between GV and the guest but that was mainly down to the slow, deliberate way the guest answered many of the questions. What he did do well, however, was to prize some quite personal reflections from Gary, and that doesn’t happen too often

Good show, great guest; wish the wines had been more exciting, but hey, that’s why we do this. I agree about scores and context–scores, good for ball-parking a level of quality maybe, but shouldn’t be elevated beyond a quantitative portion of a more well-rounded and complete review. And I agree that context is everything–and frankly i’d rather drink $7 beaujolais nouveau with my loved ones than ’96 dom perignon alone. on a side note, GARY–how about a contest to win a trip to the World Cup next year and a wine tasting tour of South Africa with you? Just throwing it out there =)
QOTD: Castell Roig Brut Cava and Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel 06 for the wine newbies; Camerano Barbera d’Alba 06 and D. Pontifical CdP 07 for meeeee (and the other experienced oenophiles)

PS–The Dr Loosen is for the crowd. I like it, but its not the type reisling I prefer. Fruity, not mineraly

I thought the wine politics book was v. interesting

QOTD — on the repeat question, a local Nouveau since it is a harvest feast (this is mostly PN) and a 375 of sherry, so no mags

I found it pretty interesting you thought that the Selbach-Oster wine was lacking acidity. I drank a bottle of it (and I’ve had several) just the other night, and for me the acidity was plentiful. I find it doesn’t have the strong piercing acidity that zaps your tongue but rather a graceful rounded acidity that really services to highlight those “layered” flavors Dr. Vino was talking about. This wine isn’t made in the über-modern style either — it’s produced mostly in large neutral oak fuders and with spontaneous fermentation (or Sponti as the German’s say). These types of wines can often offer new flavors that enrich th palate perception, things like grain and tertiary components, Sponti also services to make the sugars more rounded and less direct. This changes the texture in the mouth and makes these wines such that they’ll live for a long time and often go through some sleepy phases early on (about 2-3 years in)just before the slight earth of the sponti begins to evaporate and open up the wines full potential. It would be great if these points of info were shared on this sight, helping people be more educated buyers, but I am guessing their not known or given the time for research. It’s too bad though, there are a lot of people out there who will likely not experience this great wine due to it simply being described as 88 points (for, who ever buys anything less than 90 anymore?). My advice is to buy some, drink one now, one a year or two later, and save some for the 7-10 year range, you’ll be amazed.

  • I really like that Domaine Chignard Fleurie Les Moriers . I love the 2006… though it needed more air than most any wine I’ve had this year. A second bottle confirmed that on opening it was tight as nails, but after 9 hours of air, it was beautiful. My note:

2006 Domaine Chignard Fleurie Les Moriers
1/25/2009 rated 92 points: This was in the decanter for 7 hours by the time the note was taken (had several bottles in between). Absolutely stunning pure strawberry and raspberry aromas on the nose with some nice minerality. Smells like pouring water over hot rocks. Really, this is an absolutely gorgeous nose… smells of one of the purest expressions of real fruit I’ve encountered on a nose. Light bodied, and very much Cru Beaujolais on the palate, showing that fantastic fruit. Again following through on the finish. This isn’t hugely complex, but man is it pure and expressive in what it is, with great acidity. Drinking so beautifully today, with some nice tannins. The tannins indicate it’ll age well, but it’s drinking so well today I see no reason to wait. (430 views)

QOTD: Why YES, I am going to have a magnum for thanksgiving, and it’s pink! It’ll be the 2008 Domaine du Clos d’Alari Côtes de Provence Grand Clos. I’ll bring the mag of that and probably another red to my sister’s..

Thanks, Tyler for being on the show; I enjoyed it. I think with our meal this Thanksgiving we’ll have a 1997 Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco Rabaja and a 2006 Arnot-Roberts Clajeux Cabernet. I hadn’t thought about this before, but those will be two interesting ends of the spectrum in a couple of ways (old world/new world, very young/mature).

Since everyone’s talking about points, I might as well chime in. I kind of feel like points are the SAT scores of wine. They don’t really tell you very much about the personality of the wine, or even how well it will do in the future, but they have some sort of usefulness in evaluating their overall quality. Just like for college admissions, however, they need to be combined with a lot of other info (i.e. tasting notes…)

QOTD: Not really sure, but I’m heading home to my parents’ house so the budget will be greatly expanded!

Did you read the Wall Street Journal article on scoring wines? Very interesting.

  • You didn’t accuse Dr.Vino of being a wine commie did you? Hahaha!

I like points, gives me a general idea of the quality. Agree with previous comment that they’re like SAT scores. They don’t tell you how they’re going to perform, but if I’m dropping $50+ bones on a wine, it better get good reviews. I’m not going to buy an electronic product with crap reviews, why a wine.

    OMG OMG This is amazing!

I just read Tyler’s book a few days ago, since I’m writing on wine for my history paper, and his book really helped. I was wondering if I should track his blog down (he did mention in the book that he kept one) but the man himself shows up on WLTV!! Fantastic choice of guest, GV.
