I must say as a working wine buyer I’m finding a lot of “value” wines coming out of Napa right now. I have tasted an inordinate number of under 40 dollar wines (retail) that are impressive. From BlueTooth to St. Helena they seem to be coming out of the wood works. Things like Calistoga Cellars, Cenay, Little Lion “The volunteer”, Honig, Bon Anno, Salva Tierra, Etc.

Robert Parker, in his most recent newsletter to subscribers and speaking on his recent trip to Spain writes, “I also met the new video guru and You-Tube star, Gary Vaynerchuck who gave a dynamic speech about the place of the internet and wine, and who may have a greater future as a motivational speaker than as a wine retailer. He’s the real deal and we should all be happy there is some young talent coming up as there has been a dirth of that for sure.” Nice. Kudos GV.

  • Great banter going on the whole time. You two definitely have a great dynamic going on.
I didn’t start w/Napa, nor do I have the bankroll to try a lot of Napa wines. From time to time, though, I’ll taste some Napa flavors in blind tastings or at events. A couple weeks ago I tried the 2005 Franciscan Magnificat, which pretty much rocked my world. But I like to explore wines, ie, open as many bottles as possible within my budget, so a $45 bottle isn’t a normal purchase for me.
Anyway, you both killed it this show. Liked the boxing tangent, too.

  • OK…the wino has landed!!!!! Napa…we have a problem.

I’m heading out today to the Miner Family on Ian’s recomendation. After that it’s off to Sullivan, Barnett & White Rock. Let’s see if Ian knows his stuff.

I’m sure after today I’ll be looking at real estate out here because this place is crazy…..and since I’m wine crazy it only makes sense.

I would love to visit the vineyards where the Vayniac Cab came from so if you get this Mott….Link me up!!! I’ll be here till next week so email me if you can.

    Thanks

    Enjoyed the conversation! Great Episode!

QOTD: Didn’t start out in Napa, but I’ve visited there 2 or 3 times. Wines and tastings are somewhat over-priced but it is beautiful and there are a lot of great wines made there. It’s not my first region of choice, but I am influenced somewhat if I know the wine is from Napa. As far as CA and the U.S. is concerned I love Sonoma, Paso Robles, Sierra Foothills and Oregon. Lesser known regions and small-family owned wineries.

Side Question: No I didn’t shop for a Napa wine for Thanksgiving.
