Some interesting info about the health properties of wine but I found the guest lacking a bit of personality

  • Well, I am a diabetic, Type 1. Which means the Islet cells in my pancreas checked out when I was 7 years old. As I get older (I am now 23) my blood sugar is becoming harder to regulate, which is related to my body becoming less sensitive to insulin. Now, getting back on topic, I have known for years that Alcohol lowers blood sugar. But, as Dr. Perricone pointed out, the sugars & carbohydrates in wine will actually raise blood sugar. I have found that drinking wine slowly (2-3 glasses per hour) results in a near balance between the 2 forces, and my blood sugar will actually not change as much as it would have otherwise. Now, drinking Tokaji & Spatlese Rieslings raises my blood sugar because of the higher sugar to alcohol ratio. And, similarly, if I take shots (always a bad idea) or strong mixed drinks, then my blood sugar will lower because of the higher alchohol to sugar/carb ratio.
I don’t have any insight on the effects of spices on blood sugar levels though. My blood sugar has always shot up when I eat pies and cobblers. So, I’d like to read the study where Dr. Perricone says that wine raises blood sugar more than apple pies, because I find that hard to believe.

Great interview. Very good guest and I learned a LOT. I am a family doctor and will be incorporating some of Dr Perricones concepts when talking to my patients.Keep up the great work Gary V.
Also how about doing some Hawkes Bay Cab merlots from NewZealand against bordeaux/napa one day. Should be interesting.
All the best to you and your family and happy holidays.

I have to say, not one of my favorite episodes. To be honest – I don’t really care about the health benefits of wine. Every time we’re having a few glasses and someone says “You know, red wine is good for you!” I feel like he or she is just trying to justify drinking it. I don’t need any justification beyond “I like it.”

QOTD: I have no idea where this is coming from, but I’ll guess something to do with the spice…

GV & Dr. – very interesting stuff
Question I was hoping to here the answer to – how much wine is beneficial per day??
I have heard varying answers to this – anywhere from one glass to 3 glasses per day.
    Doctor, what say you??

(BTW -Loooong time since I have commented; Life has been way too hectic – not enough time having good wine & food)

G, I too am seeking out more Pomerol wines. My palate is really honing in on right bank merlot right now and Pomerol is King. If you remember, can youn try and do a QPR right bank ep.? Thanks.

QOTD: No idea, but, I’ll go with a natural v. refined sugar effect.

Wow, Gary Vaynerchuk and Dr. Perricone in the same episode! I have never thought that I would see this. What do these two have in common? The answer is = they are two of the greatest marketing geniuses in our generation. Well done.

Terrific episode. Great to see an accomplished scientist who lends the credibility to the spirit of the place.

On a side note, Kevin from a few comments back… You’re a dick.

    Gary, Dr. Perricone,

I really enjoyed this episode. The more I know about wine the more I seem to enjoy it.

QOTD: cinnamon is likely the answer(thanks for the hint Gary) but kind of hoping that answer is Apples.
