line of the day – ‘maybe that’s why I’m such a girly kind of guy…because I drink so much wine’

Some interesting info about the health properties of wine but I found the guest lacking a bit of personality

Great show Gary! I dunno know but after seeing this I’m pretty hungry….

  • QOTD: my guess is that cinnimon and other spices that people put in apple pie work together to lower peoples GI levels. It is kind of like how there is a certain spice compound in Jamaican Jerk that prevents arthritis, if we can figure out these certain spices and we can start to use them in our daily cooking life we can prevent certain inflammatory diseases.

  • Nice Wine!!!!!

QOTD: I take cinnimon everyday to lower my sugar which recently went up. In fact it started going up a few years ago after many trips to the Wine Library…go figure.

So after asking the guys at the Vitamin Shop what I can do they said take cinnimon and stay out of the Wine Library…..

Well, at least I take cinnimon!!

Loved listening to Dr. Perricone! Is he a naturopath, or regular doctor? It’s so great to finally hear doctors talking about the benefits naturally inherent in foods and herbs. Oh, and the answer to the question is cinnamon…

  • I’m a firm believer in the health benefits of red wine, but one of my major frustrations is that QUALITY and VARIETAL is never mentioned. When they conduct these studies what wines are they using. I’m going to assume it is all lower quality large format (1.5 litre) wines, because that’s what the majority of the population drinks. Regardless of whether the wine is organic there needs to be a stronger case for purchasing smaller production estate bottled wines over mass produced crap with who knows what added to it. There are also major differences in anti oxident levels in varietals: one of the highest levels of resveratrol are Grenache based wines.

  • Agree: Foods are extremely powerful. We will get back (in terms of health) what we put in to our bodies. Really enjoyed this ‘healthy’ wine show.. lots of great information shared. I have seriously never thought of so many tastes in wine before.

I like the idea of taking the daily resveratrol supplement, along with a glass of wine. I have been taking my teaspoon per day (equal to 100 glasses of wine) for over a year now and do so for the inflammation effects that Dr. Perricone spoke about, as well as longevity benefits overall. There has been news lately that we may need to increase the amount of resveratrol we take daily in supplement form (and it is much higher than the 30 mg Dr. P mentioned), though I will trust the brand I take to advise me on this because they are at the forefront of scientific research in supplement form (science + purity + quality crushes!!).

Great show! I had no idea that organic/biodynamic wines could actually be healthier than regular wines, in terms of resveratrol at least. I have been reading that the Tannat grape from Uruguay has some of the highest levels of resveratrol — I’d love to see another show on Tannat and other wines from Uruguay.

QOTD: I have cinnamon in my oatmeal every morning for that reason.

Awesome guest, I love it when science and lifestyle comes together, especially the “non-pushy” science like Dr. Perricone was mentioning. The whole food IS better, and scientists should be trying to support that nutrition, not replace it. Nice job, gentlemen!

Very impacting show Guys! Are you going to section off “Certified Organic” red wines now so the consumers know the reservatol will be present?

  • I don’t think he quite got the point of the QOTD, but seems like a really good guy.

I like how the “2 weeks of blind head to heads” turned into 3 days…

  • Good show GV, and thanks Doc…fascinating.

My better half has sometimes has an issue with myalgia, or can get a headache due to chemical sensitivity…a very small amount of moderately to highly tannic red wine brings incredibly fast relief, where it would remain untouched by any other type of alcoholic beverage. We’ve been thinking of picking up some resveritrol capsules just as an experiment to see if that could be the magic ingredient.

QOTD: Traditional eastern medicine has seen food as the major modality of health and healing…the herbs and acupuncture only becomes necessary when it can no longer be fixed by what what we eat, or by the cessation of eating something we should not.

One more reason for Gary to have Cinnamon Toast Crunch with his petit verdot.

Fun episode. Wine with dinner has another anti-stressing component: you relax and sit with your loved ones, which has got to be healthier than a drive-thru or a snarf in front of the fridge. Family crushes it!

I actually have cinnamon every day in my carmel truffle coffee with frothed skim milk latte, sprinkled with cocoa and shaved dark chocolate. Mark Twain said that The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like (except for wine), and do what you’d rather not.
