It is pretty much like champagne and how true champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France. The rest is sparkling wine. Tequila must come from the state of Tequila, Mexico, and from the agave plant. All others legally by Mexican law must be referred to as Mescal.

The worm in Mescal is just a horrible gimmick though. Thank goodness sparkling wine makers don’t have a gimmick.
