It was great to finally meet you on Monday in Atlanta. Thank you so much for taking the time to come here and meet with us. QOTD – I recently had a relatively inexpensive 2005 Bordeaux and it was just OK. I don’t remember the name and don’t need to.

QOTD: The 2001 Ducru Beaucaillou that we drank two years ago was quite disappointing to me. For a 2nd Growth that had cost $50 as a future, it lacked depth and elegance. Soft, round, simple, just lacked thunder. I had expected more. But in fairness, we also had openned a wonderful 1957 Margaux, and that could have humbled the Ducru in comparison. Still, I expected more.

Ditto the comment from JeffWalnuts of CA, about the 2005 Petit Bocq, from Wine Library nevertheless, in that it’s a very nice surprise. It would have been a nice buy even at twice the price.

QOTD worst bottle of Bordeaux ever? Thats easy … 1999 Clos Du Marquis. Tasted like it was soaked in a can of dog food.
I could dry heave thinking about it.. wow.. no mas.

Could we have a 100% blind show? It would be great to see GV try to guess the vino.

  • Good episode and sweet shirt might I add. I find it odd that this was episode #787 the day after (possibly filmed on) the day that Boeing flew the inaugural flight of the new 787 Dreamliner. Coincidence? C’moooon.

QOTD: N/A (regrettably haven’t had much in the way of Bordeaux)

QOTD: I don’t remember the name, but one of the Bordeaux from the 3/29 WL Party live episode taping was horrible.

    And KaD!

Bordeaux blah blah blah…outdated, expensive, boring…like trying to get excited about watching Entertainment tonight with the wife…who cares. There are so many other cheap exciting wines in the world today. No wonder why the French are having trouble selling their wines; wake up guys, drop your prices, or get creative.

  • Hey Gazza, you seemed a bit flat today, probably the wines fault! Love ya work! When are you coming Down Under?

You were getting a little blackcurrant AND cassis! (1:35). uh…yeahHHHa…

what a shame on the ’05s. And I love Pessac-Leognan.

QotD – ’98 Petrus, 3 different times has betrayed me. When I worked at a high end retail, and my young super, from the family which owned the market knew the value of the excitement of pouring it for some of our rollers. Though it was no monetary pain, and not my cost, but part of the business’ necessary plan to be ‘in the game’, each time, THIS WINE WOULD NOT PLAY NICE, or reveal its beauty. I, as a pro, know that oft times you must go to a wine such as this, or at least be able to meet it, to look into it and examine how it is built, where it is hiding, etc., but I have found this highly acclaimed wine from an acclaimed vintage STINGY, and ungenerous; a dissapointment. And the results of all that was only a couple of bottles sold. And as one might guess, they go to the guy w/ sooo much mney, that it’s a statement, and not even about the wine, really. Bad taste in my mouth, all around.

lol, I can’t help but notice that you stock the Le Thil. What do you say to your wine buyers when you stock a wine like that?

QOTD: Hmmm… I can’t say I’ve ever been majorly disappointed with a Bordeaux. Disappointment is always a game of expectations, and I never expect a fantastic QPR play for Bordeaux. Backhanded compliment? Perhaps.

Pretty much all bordeaux I have tasted, expensive or not, is watered down crap compared to cali cab. I have quite a few bordeaux bottles (mainly 2005) stock piled in my fridge, but every time I open them I say they must need more age as they are disapointing. I doubt I will ever buy anymore. But thats just my palate……

    Thanks, G.

QOTD: Not sure of the exact producer, but, it was a 2004 Margaux. The Brane-Catanet…or something like that. Nothing but dried leaves and dust. Zero fruit.

I like these side by side blind tastings – using 2 glasses. They are short and sweet and to the point. Enjoyable. Check out more of these 05 Bordeaux – bought a bunch from WL that haven’t opened up as yet that would like your view before I start.
QOTD: Had an 01 from Margaux area last year that was too tannic for me. Puckered my mouth. Have to wait at least another 5 years before I open the next bottle.

QOTD: I think I can count the # of Bordeaux I’ve had on one hand, none of them particularly stand out as being either good or bad.

    QOTD: Most disappointed or worst?

Disappointed would be 1988 Calon Segur (hollow as a pinata at a jenny craig party) or 2003 Lasegue.
Worst would be (Long list could happen here), but off the top would be the 1995 and 1998 Chateau Simard, 2003 Chateau De Pez come to mind.
Best surprise I drank in the last year was a right bank from 1991 Le Fleur Plaisanse. Out of nowhwere and great.

QOTD: Biggest disappointment is that I did not get more 2005 Bordeaux. I have 3 bottles. Have only had about 6 Bordeaux in my life & most have been solid with a few excellent.

Q – …and the biggest dis in America would be most of the ’98 Cali Cabs. too soft red fruit, not enough black friut, or firm structure. Made for easier, accessible drinking, but I just can’t dig on red fruit in Cab Sav. It’s ok in Cab Franc (Chinon, et al) or older Bordeaux, like after 20 or more years, when that fruit starts to turn to cranberry flavors – but those have hugely complex scent profiles, with lots of spice, olive, and non fruit components to them.

QOTD: A couple of weeks ago I opened a 1982 Gruaud Larose, it was corked, that was pretty disappointing. I also had a corked 1985 Lafite not too long ago, that was a bummer. But as a whole, bordeaux has really been hit and miss for me. When I find a good one, I love it, but I’ve had a lot of failures, at least with QPR in mind.
