Santa (otherwise known as my wife) is bringing me Wii games. Originally was going to bring me a Wii but I had already purchased it for her and we didn’t realize until they were both wrapped and under the tree.

  • QOTD: Well, no gifts from Santa for me, but Hanukah Harry (or rather Hanukah Henrietta aka my girlfriend) brought me a 2005 Chat. Leoville Barton. Sweet. Happy Holidays/New Year to you and your fam! And everyone else as well!

Thanks, G. Jumping in on the comments is a nice touch. It certainly helps w/connecting with us viewers and will almost definitely bring out more lurkers. I was also thinking about your question last night about what we’d like to see more of in 2010. How about devising a system that will allow us to recommend wines to review blind. You give the topic, we e-mail brandon, ian, or kmurph…they pull the wines, you taste & review, then reveal the wine and person who recommended it. Maybe on a laid back Fri. type scenario. The more interaction w/us, the more the comments will build.

QOTD: A ridiculous amount of love from my family and probably alot of wine gift cards. Perfect.

  • I am seriously hoping Santa brings me my job back or at least one of equal or higher value that I will enjoy as much. 🙁

Great episode with a great theme. I think you could explore the niceties of Australia more with some good wines from the West. Especially from Margaret River, like the Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay that you carry:
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=46841
If you can get a slightly older vintage that might even be better, but in my experience a young one should still be good.

I’m a big aussie fan. For those who would like to try a little aussie terrior with their shiraz, I can recommend a few nice wines. Not too much oak, good balance, good complexity:

    1) Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz from Hunter Valley
    2) Rosemount Balmoral Syrah from McLaren Vale. The use of the word “syrah” rather than shiraz indicates something of what they’re up to with this wine. I loved the ’98.
    3) Hardy’s Eileen Hardy Shiraz, also from McLaren. Super good — no bad vintage (at least not that I’ve tasted)
    4) Castagna Genesis Syrah (again, not Shiraz 🙂 ) Quite different from most aussie shiraz. Worth a try. Gary, if you like your bacon raw, try the 2003 Castagna Sauvage. Different. All this outfit’s stuff is different.

Ok now that Ive watched the show (blush)
    I can actually comment here

‘As probally the Most Shirazed out
Vayniac here, I can tell you before The Marqui Phillips,
Molly Parker Rage, That literally had Winos paying
Outrageous bones, due to even more Outrageous Trumped up scores
Aussie Wine was actually Pretty Dam Good back about ten years

Ellien Hardy Reserves 1998 (was da bomb) come to mind
and Mt Langley circa 1998-2000 from Victoria were serious bottles

But because of the Wine Guru Hype with insane ratings of
96 -98 and even 100 point scores, on Flabby, Hot, Fake Grape Juice
The Game changed because the Marketing changed $$$$

Why Bust your Ass making Good wine, when all ya had to do was
Know the right connection, get a Bogus Fabricated High Score
    and YOUR RICH $$

  • GV,

Fun show, esp with the solid Pinot on the front end, and the ridiculous Shiraz on the back end.

Question for you: I’m a HUGE syrah fan, esp Northern Rhone. One of my good friend is a big Cali syrah fan. As we share our experiences, I’m noticing a lot more of what I’ve dubbed “Fake Funk” on the Cali syrahs. Like someone is walking around with a truck full of some funky chemical (brett maybe?), playing KC and the Sunshine Band, and trying to add distilled “Old World” flavor to California wines. I’ve heard of additives in wines, and chemistry experiments in the cellars, but is the Truckload of Fake Funk possible?
