I watched your winelibrarytv.com for the first time yesterday. I wastched the Wayne Gretzky interview/wine tasting. It was great! So thenI was inspired to look for your most recent video, the one on “secret pack” wines for Christmas weekend 2009. In answer to your question of the day, my family enjoyed a riesling by Mirassou from California, 2007. I am no wine connoisseur by any means and I’ll be honest when I say that I purchased the wine because there was a good offer at the store where I purchased it and the label caught my eye. LOL I was looking for a riesling (as it is my mother’s favorite wine with Christmas dinner), but we were very pleased with the results of this wine even though it was a completely random choice. It had a clean, crisp flavor that was not overly sweet and not too “fruity”. We had it with a seasoned pork tenderloin and various vegetables in sauces, etc. and it was very well matched. It didn’t overwhelm the dinner and yet it stood out at the same time. I would definitely recommend this riesling for those who are looking for a light, refreshing white wine with a meal. Thank you for inspiring me to try some different wines!

For xmas eve, drank the 2007 Chehalem risling reserve-good mineral and lemon lime flavors. Also a 1991 Storybook mtn Zin-great nose of cherry , although the taste was past it’s prime, it still went well with smoked pork loin.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Gary!!! Thanks for a TREMENDOUS year of killer content! I bet you’re having an absolute ball with Misha’s 1st Christmas…

    QOTD:
Wines enjoyed over the holidays so far:

    (1) 2006 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Gewurtztraminer (Turckheim, Alsace) 14.5% alc: GORGEOUS dark yellow urine color, viscous swirling in glass, very floral on the nose, nice mouthfeel & textbook spicyness, nice finish. Paired nicely with turkey. Rating = 91 Points

(2)2008 Jean-Claude Bougrier Vouvray 11.5% alc: lighter color, fresh nose like throwing clean linens and chopped up green apples in a river and sniffing it, a brief soft attack that EXPLODES on the mid-palate with gorgeous granny smith apple, nice minerality in transition to a long long long finish. I was shocked at how long the finish was considering the acidity and clean nose. Rating = 93 Points

(3)2006 Montes Alpha Merlot 14.5% alc: Nice dark ruby color, some oak/spice on nose like someone dropped cinnamon toast on the hardwood floor(def not Oak Monster), gorgeous tobacco and cigar action, nice ripe tannins, well made and good structure, tobacco transitions to palate with some leather components. Went nicely with steak. Rating = 90 Points
(NOTE: I had this wine once before and it gets WAYYYY better after decanting more at least an hour. The tasting note was after 2 hours decanting)

    Wine I’m drinking tonight:
    (4) 2008 Christian Salmon Sancerre Cuvee Vielles Vignes – will report back…

On xmas we had the 2005 Masperla….and it met all of the vayner-hype….classic grenache fruit (reds) which changed over a few hours to great tobacco, tea and leather flavors….a great “Spanish Chateauneuf” is how i think of it. Simply outstanding, with years to improve. Would be wild to taste blind against some great chateauneuf-du-papes….

Sojourn 07 Gap’s Crown Pinot Noir. It’s the best pinot I’ve had so far. The pleasure factor was off the charts. WS seemed to like it as well, scoring it a 95.
