Man quite a lineup of wines. I wish I could have got it shippped to TN. Maybe one day.

I had a wine lined up on Saturday to drink with my imediate family, but the lone restaurant in my hometown that allows you to bring wine in was closed!! A power outtage believe it or not.

So it never got opened. It was a gift from my sister. And I just cant think of the name of it. I do remember it being a northern rhone.

I did have a sam adams irish red beer that night. Lots of malt. Maybe a tad bit too much for me. Lost some of the subtle flavors as it was served a tad cold.

Gary, Hope you feel better soon. I feel a bit guilty continuing on night after night describing wines and meals, this holidays has been the best. i am back to work for at least a couple of days tomorrow so must take a short break from great wine and food until New Years Eve. Anyway, here it goes for Dec 28th. Oysters on the half shell again, 4 types from the Canadian Maritimes, peak oyster season right now, paired with 2007 Domaine des Malandes Chablis(village level, $17CN) and Larmandier -Bernier Blanc de Blancs NV Premier Cru Champagne($69CN), believe it or not the Chablis the better match, cleaner and less complex, was better with the oysters. We kept enough of this mind blowing champ though to go with my wife’s mind blowing lobster bisque and oh what a match! On to Lamb Popsicles(Rack cut into individual bite size pieces) with fenugreek/turmeric sour cream curry with turmeric new potatoes with baby spinach, matched with 2007 Schloss Gobelsburg Steinsetz Gruner Veltliner, from Austria, an unbelievable match. This time room for dessert was saved and my wife Kim’s Molten Chocolate Flourless Lava cake was nearly equalled with the 2007 Foreign Affair Cab Sauv Icewine and the Henry of Pelham 2006 Cab Franc Icewine, both from Niagara and the latter winning out due to higher acidity and overall more balance and refreshment. Next two nights will be light eating out of necessity! Joel

  • I will be picking up that Gerwurtztraminer. For Christmas Eve and the pork tamales I went big and juicy with a 2006 Preston Dry Creek Barbera from Healdsburg, CA. I like the jammy fruit with a spicy pork tamale. Yet like a Cabernet, it held up with out being too dry. It had hints of herbs, particularly bayleaf with mild acids and sweet dark fruit. It was excellent!

For Christmas day and some leftover actions, followed by Pozole, I sipped on a splendid 2000 Dutch Henry Winery, Chafen Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Estate Bottle, which we sat since 2006 for a special occasion and this was it! After a good hour or two decanting, this wine was ready to enjoy. The flavor was mild at first then it hits on the back end with gripping tannins and fruits like plums and cherry and some cloves. This was sensational. My mouth was watering just smelling it! What a treat.

Can you get some Dutch Henry at the Wine Library. The distribution is non existent and it would be a really amazing thing to supply.

Thanks for the great Christmas Pack. One question, why no bubbly?

  • Christmas Eve, I shared a bottle of 1999 Merryvale Profile with my wife. Very delish after 2 hours of decanting.
Christmas Day, I opened a 2006 Domaine de l’Oratoire St Martin Cairanne Blanc and 2006 Cardwell Hill Pinot Noir with the family. The white wine was a smashing success!
And just for fun, I had a 2006 3 Rings Shiraz which was a fruit explosion.

Thanks for the show. Really wanted the Christmas pack, but I live in Michigan 🙁
