QOTD: With some 35+ family members and close friends coming, the wine list is eclectic and long. Whites, sparklings, reds (including a Gidonas competition), mulled wine for aroma and to warm people up. Sleeper star this year will be a new find: 2004 Emilio Bulfon Piculit Neri Delle Venezie.

Piculit Neri is grape you’ve never heard of from Italy. From Bulfon’s webiste: “Piculìt Neri is planted only in the area around Castelnovo del Friuli and Pinzano al Tagliameto, in the west of the province of Pordenone.” Bulfon’s mission is to resurrect grapes lost for centuries (he scours ancient forests to find them in the wild). He calls himself a wine archeologist.

Ruby red color, very fresh, astonishingly vibrant red fruits, strong tannins and vanilla, smooth. My guests will wonder how in the world this grape could have gone missing all these decades/centuries. Oh, and astonishing QPR: $7 a bottle in Texas. Really.

Last night for our end of the work week dinner out had Kistler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2003. It was bombastic, rivaling the best Pinots I’ve had, deep dark fruit and spice box on the nose with jammy tannins and fruit on the palate, that rips your face off. My wife loved it and my wine buddy who has a deep wine cellar also loved it… has to be a 95+ experience! Merry Christmas! We’ll see what we drink tonight???
