Merry Christmas everyone, I have to work Christmas eve unfortunately so no wine for me tonight. Tomorrow it will be a late afternoon dinner at mom’s/grandma’s house. Plan on starting with a 2007 En Gedi 100% Grenache from Sans Liege winery followed up by either 2007 Amuse Bouche or 2005 Chateau Faugeres. Full review of wines will be posted tomorrow night! PS: Gary did you get an American Eagles jersey yet?

I didn’t pick up the secret pack, but I’ve ordered and re-ordered the Kolbenhof. It’s great stuff, though it’s worth mentioning that you should let it chill out for a while before diving right in. Quite high in alcohol and you get a little too much heat on first open.

  • Ben

So question again…any other recommended Gewurztraminers in a more CKC price range?

Happy Holidays to Gary and your Family!!

QOTD: Christmas Eve: 2007 Baton Laguna Ridge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2007. Some earthiness barnyard blew off on the initial sniffy-sniff. As it opened up hay, minty eucalyptus, strawberry-rhubarb pie, black cherries, carnation dew. A little young slightly hot on the back-end but overall quite delicious.
Christmas Day: Gattinara Italian wine. Only remember the cost and that you loved it. Hope it’s food-friendly. I’m sure we’ll like it too. 🙂

Gary, At this moment, drinking a Cono Sur Cab Reserve 2004 down here in Venezuela where I am celebrating with my wife’s family. Pretty good. But the beatiful, tropical weather is even better. Getting ready for some good latin eats… Pernil (Roast Pork), Hallacas and Pan de Jamon.

btw, who is the laptop girl avatar when you go to holiday pack screen :)?

Merry merry and thanks for a great year… and special shout out to Brandon W. who always makes me feel like i am the only customer of WL.

As requested: Christmas Eve/Christmas bottle (half tonight, half tomorrow)
1980 Warre Porto Vintage (Portugal, Douro, Porto)
91 pts Cork crumbled. No bricking. On decanting, black black cherry and alcohol on the nose and up front, with chocolate syrup overtones coming in at the mid-point. Simple, but very very (very) long finish.

+90 minutes Fruit on the nose much the same, although the alcohol is gone. The fruit upfront is similar, but the chocolate is a little darker, as some tannins now present. Still that long finish.

+180 minutes. Dark chocolate added to the nose, and stronger through the flavor profile.

+240 much the same as at 180

QOTD: I’m about to finish off a Charles Shaw: Merlot – 2008. Yes, two buck chuck. It has been open for two days now and it has shown considerable maturity as along the way. The buttered popcorn fragrance has gone down considerably from removing the cap I had put on it, one of those resealing tops. In addition to this, it has gained significant color growing to a completely intense dark purple.

Once with a fragrance of butter popcorn that dominated the nose, it now carries a dark plum, crushed black cherry, sweet strawberry and some dark fruit that escapes my mind.

Sweet on the initial attack with a bit of berries and plum on the mid-palate, finishing with dust, strawberry, cherry, a hit of plum, and alcohol lasting fairly well for the price.

Overall, quite harmonious through and through given how long it has been open. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out a few years down the road.

Just got hit with a tinge of chocolate after a bit. Probably just my imagination.

@GaryV, Does WL sell the bigassglass?

QOTD: For Christmas Eve: 2005 D’alessandro Il Bosco Syrah

The sniffy sniff was very heavy in black berries, and sour cherries as well as pepper.

My first impression and taste was sour cherries and chocolate. The tannins stood out but were well rounded and balanced. I got a sense of pepper as well on the first taste.

My mid palate was cream and berries. WOW!!! a lot of cream.

After taste and finish was long, very long and still had some berry and cream flavors.

This was a great well balanced wine. It was very well balanced and didn’t overpower in the slightest. I do think the given score was a bit too generous. Great wine though.

Hey all fellow Vaniacs Mott and Gary.
Just finished 2008 A to Z Pinot Gris. I liked it for $ 12.00. I would definately recommend A to Z for QPR.
I will be having over the holidays: Gaston Chiquet premier crew champagne and Dom. du Salvard Cheverny 2008 (Liore Sauvignon blanc) and Dom. Monpertuis Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2006.
I will give tasting notes as they come in.
    Cool Dave from Alabama.
PS I still like ” The Boxer” Shiraz. *sticks tongue out*
    🙂

as the year wraps up, thanks for all you do Gary
planned wines (for no reason other than I am thirsty for them):
    Schramsberg 1999 Blanc de Blanc
Zoemie De Sousa Brut Cuvee Merveille
OnThEdge 2004 Frediani Vineyard Charbono (still have 2 bottles left)
the list will likely grow as we are almost snowed in which I think
is a fine reason to open some bottles.
    Merry Christmas.

  • Great stuff this time Gary! I thought you looked at my last message for a minute. Don’t let your passion go over the money making. Keep sharing it. My Xmas wine is a supermarket wine that was given to me two days ago, it’s a Hardys Crest Cabernet/shiraz/merlot from South Eastern Australia. It’s just like a new world wine, ready to drink right now, the tannins are like ghosts in the dark, it is very fruity, it has no oak at all, and it stays on the palate for no morwe than 5 seconds. Just to say that during my last visit in Bordeaux, I thought that they were trying to imitate the new world wines too much, I think that they will loose their identity if they try it too hard….Gary, you don’t know it but you’re one of my best friend so happy Xmas to you and all your friends!

What a great holiday pack! My Dad loves the tasting video along with the wine. He is not a white wine guy at all but loved the complexity of your one in the pack. I prefer the Malbec and he prefers the Sansonnet. The both of us are vegetarians and when we were tasting the Sansonnet i turn to him and say this is got this earthy musky flavor i can’t figure out. we un-pause and gary says dark meat and I just started laughing.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone out there. Thanks Gary for the Christmas treat of great wine at a great price!

Happy Holidays Mott! And Gary V and the V-nation.

QOTD: I skipped the Christmas pack and went after Gary’s highly rated Gigondas; Chateau De Saint Cosme, Valbelle 2006. It seemed kind of candyesque to my amateur nose but boy was it smooth and delicious.

QOTD: Felton Road Pinot Noir 2007, part of October’s Pack B. You really did it right this time GV, this wine is crazy good. This is my full tasting note:

Decanted for about an hour and had with roast lamb. Light red color, can clearly see your fingers through the glass. On the nose an explosion of bright red fruit and a hint of dirt/earth with a little bit of chalk on there for good measure. On the palate it’s a light-bodied attack of bright raspberry with mouth-puckering acidity. Wow, just all kinds of pleasant. Some good sweet spice on there as well, resolving to pleasant ripe tannins on the finish. Paired very well with my lamb in light sauce, but was just as good drinking on its own when the meal was through.

92 points on my palate. This wine rocks, so uh, get it back in stock at 30 bones 🙂

QOTD: Can’t get the secret pack up here in snowy North Bay, Ontario, so will now spend the week trying to chase down the Gewurtz. Tried the 2006 St. Cosme Gigondas Valbelle with Tortiere(meat pie)tonight(Xmas Eve) and to be honest it didn’t quite bring the same thunder to my palate Gary as it did for you. I found it a bit big for me, and at 14.5% alcohol a little hot in my mouth on the finish. My wife enjoyed it though so all was not lost! Wines cost more here in Canada and I had to get it shipped from Alberta and at $62 CAN it was a bit low on the QPR. Tomorrow is Turkey night so it will be either Riesling or Gewurtz and Pinot Noir or Gamay. Would love to review at that time. All the best over the holidays Gary and Mott and enjoy the time with family and friends. Joel

  • Loved the sound of the Gewurtz. Must try and track some down here in Hong Kong. Out partying for Christmas eve last night. Started on the Terrazas Malbec reserva 2008 – nothing special. Moved on to Asahi draft beer – delicious. Ended up drinking a nice Rioja but can’t recall the name. Had a few nips of Baileys of Glenrowan Founder liqueur Muscat when we got home. This is a magnificent desert wine – tastes like liquid toffee and smooth as silk. I had to lug this one back from Australia last trip becuase very few Australian desert wines imported into Hong Kong. Merry Christmas to everyone.

QOTD: I had the 2005 Saint-Hilaire Blanquette de Limoux Brut, which is a nice little Languedoc sparkler. Lemon-lime central all over the nose, palate, and finish- that being said, it has good acidity & the finish was surprisingly long. 88pts
