  • Merry Christmas y/all!

Had a brilliant Italian dinner last night, and drunk:
    08 Bidoli Pinot Grigio
    06 Pio Cesare Barbera
    04 Tabola Vino Nobile Riserva
    06 Frescobaldi Chianti
    01 Castellare Vino Nobile

Were all okay, the Barbera and Chianti were quite good actually. Espresso and Limoncello afterwards, so hangover today.

I’m looking forward to trying the Christmas pack wines. They sound spectacular. In the meantime….

QOTD: Christmas Eve we had 2006 Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay. Really smooth wine, and I’m lucky enough to have a few more hanging around. This is a chardonnay with the acidity to age a bit. It has a good bit of oak to it, but the oak is well-integrated, and surrounds an apple-melon core that I really, really like.

Christmas day we had a bigger group, so we had three wines: 2008 Wellington Chardonnay, which is a bit on the oaky side, with a buttery apple tart at the core. Solid effort at sixteen bones, but doesn’t blow me away or anything. Also had the 2004 Da Vinci Chianti Classico Reserva. A very nice 100% Sangiovese, with raspberry and cherry on the attack, and some leathery notes on the finish. Very nice wine. And finally the 2007 Domaine du Mas de L’Avail Maury “Expression”. Purchased to go with chocolate mousse, this wine did hold its own with big plum flavors and solid structure. Blackberry, black raspberry, and some cassis, as well, this was obviously Grenache, even though unusual in a sweet, fortified style (16% ABV). It was a fun experiment and I’m glad I had it, but it was still maybe a touch disappointing. Six Grapes Port would have been just as good or better, and 25% less money.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and a fun week running up to the New Year.

  • For Christmas Eve we had duck – and started out with a bottle of :
    Mormoreto Castello di Nipozzano 1999

Elegant – complex on the nose – silky tannnin structure in the mouth – quite long – fully developed and mature.

Then we made a rather heavy “laneshift” and opened a bottle of :
Molly Dooker – Two Left Feet 2008.
Extremely juicy fruit on the nose – almost port-like flavours and spices. Black black black in the mouth – though it holds 16,5 % alcohol the wine is still elegant eventhough it is extreeeeeeeemely compact and powerfull. Surprisingly easy to drink – the bottle was soon empty. A wine that I definately¨will re-visit again soon.

With the dessert we had a Offley Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004
Nice classic style of – fine mix of fruit and sweetness. Not too sweet – would also go fine with matured cheese.

Happy New Year Gary, and you folks watching !!!!!!!!!1

  • Thanks so much for the amazing Holiday Christmas Pack Gary! Like many others it’s now a tradition for my wife to get me one of these each year now 🙂 She also manages to mess with me each year too. In the previous years she’s replaced most of the bottles with wines that were VERY cheap lol Usually really obscure names too so it wouldn’t be obvious at first although the arbor mist gave it away last year and the year before that the rose zin did! This year she just opened the box and re-taped it so I’d think she messed with them! So even though she didn’t actually do anything, she had great pleasure watching me open it up very slowly and cautiously in anticipation of what she might have done!

Spending the holidays this year with my in-laws.. none of them drink wine so I only opened one, which was the Hofstatter to go with my meal! Very amazing wine and I’m excited to see what it’s like on day 2 today 😀

OK..now I’m POed that you can’t ship to my state…

QOTD: Chat. St. Michelle Riesling, J.Lohr Cab, Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz, Christian Meioux Medoc. Reviews: Riesling and cab mentioned are my old standbys – not the best, but always know what I’m getting. Jip Jip Rocks was way over the top, stopped at one glass. Medoc was the star of the show, went great with the prime rib.

We had a lot of wines yestarday but I’m just going to review one. I brought one of the 2006 JL Chave St Joseph Offerus that I got off cindy a while back. That stuff is awesome. Sweet rasberry fruit, plenty of fresh acidity, not a whole lot of tannins. Really nice flavors of smoked ham, pepper, and black olives. I loved it and Im glad Ive got two more.
