I LOVE Pierre Peters, and much of the Terry Theise portfolio! Wow, that’s a Vintage date Grand Cru – Mesnil! The GREAT Mesnil, that is… Always very impressive results. And priced like they’re GIVING you wine! I feel the excitement.
I’m not surprised on the Veuve. While I can’t say they stink, ( I say there are no bad bubs in Champagne, just overvalued products)I can’t help but be a little harder on all the people who are as interested in selling luggage, perfume, and a bunch of other name brand crap. All of their obsene amounts of money cannot hold up to the love and single minded dedication pursued by small families, who’s very LIVING depends on the reputation they build by putting their own name on the bottle. Many of these efforts may be modest, but adequate, but I take much more pleasure in supporting such artisinale, honest enterprises. Often, their results are superlative, sublime, superior. Sometimes, as here, it seems like they’re giving it to you for free! Viva les Recoltrant- Manipulants!

QotD – had a simple one of our house D.I.’s, Haton Brut Classic. Very inexpensive, and as it was my first experience w/ them, I was very pleasantly pleased. Happy that I put it in the hands of many people, though our floor had a 40-stack of VCP, and a 60-stack of Frex, among other piles of products.

Happy New Year. I can’t wait to carry on my new stat research.

NYE, after work, I bartended for my 22 year old nephew’s (70% scholarship recipient to Samford/baseball – watch for him in the future) staging party, before he and about 35 friends took the trolley out on the town. As they’re now old enough, I did a German Riesling demo tasting on my bar. ’05 Schloss Shoenberg Estate QbA, ’05 JJ Prum WS Kab, ’07 Kerpen WS Spat, and ’04 Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Aus.

Happy New Year to all the Vayniaks out there!

QOTD: 1990 Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon RP was right on with his 96 rating. Been waiting a long time in my cellar. Thought it was time on its 20th birthday.

Another very nice show – of course very appropriate.

I popped a readily available Domaine Ste. Michelle Brut, normally a fairly reliable, refined and delicious pour; a bit of a disappointment this time. The flavors this time seemed “off”.

Thanks again, and Happiest of New Years to you and all your Family.

May we all draw the closest to God as possible this year!

Qotd: Well, I wanted to drink some bubbly but i ended up drinking a blue moon with orange to ring in the new year. But i would have loved to have drank some brunello.

    Gary,

I am a day late seeing your last episode of 2009. It was for me a great year of watching WLTV episodes. Learned a lot, laughed a lot. All for free! Can’t ask for much more. Thank you so much for the huge effort you make to entertain us and educate us about wine.

My wife and I like Gloria Ferrar Blanc De Noir, especially for the price, but we did not have any bubbly on New Year’s Eve this year. My birthday is December 30, and my wife and our son both bought me some vino. I wanted to mention one in particular, because we shared it last night [New Year’s Eve] with pizza, and it was surprisingly tasty.

The wine is Dos Cabezas Wineworks Toscano, 2006. The label says that it’s a blend of Sangiovese,Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, & Syrah. It also says that the grapes were grown here in Arizona.

I mention this wine simply because I did not think that Arizona produced wine of this quality. It really took us by surprise. The wine was a tiny bit overpowered by the pepperoni pizza, but it was delicious none the less. It is a medium-bodied wine [even though it claims 14.3% alcohol], with color reminiscent of pinot noir – almost coppery around the edges. The nose and the flavor porfile is somewhat plummy and earthy, with pepper and spice, and just the slightest hint of something like cinnamon. Very unusual.

Anyway, I wanted to give a plug to AZ wines. I have no ties to the AZ wine industry, but I hope people around the country will try some AZ wines. It would be great if the AZ wine makers stay in business for many years to come. If the Toscano 2006 is any indicator, they deserve success. I can’t wait to try my next bottle.

I wish you an all the Vayniacs only the best in 2010.

    Mike

    GV,

Thanks for the great episodes in 09. Happy New Year to you and everyone at WL.

QOTD: I was eyeing the 2002 LR Crystal on sale at Costco. Couldn’t pull the trigger. Went with the NV Albrecht brut reserve from Alsace instead. Maybe next decade!

  • Hi Gary,

Just wondering if “Getting sick all the time” = Efficient Wine Tasting?
I may be wrong, but I’m quite sure the sense of smell is somewhat dulled if you get the cold (one of your recent posts at http://garyvaynerchuk.com/).
Were there recent shows where this may have affected your performance?

Oh and btw, love the show! The personality you put to wine is really inspiring!

    Cheers n peace,

    Jlow

Nice. I as well choose Champagne as my desert isle wine. I was lucky enough to have some Dom Perignon Oenotheque 1993 a few days before, total face melter. I had to work through the new year but celebrated after work with a nice affordable Dampierre. I really enjoyed the almond, lemon, and yeast components it brought to the table. Thanks again Gary. Hope to see you as much as possible this year.

QOTD – I got 2 bottles of the 1996 Legras St. Vincent based on GV’s recommendation. Had one for New Years with friends, saving the other. Didn’t knock my socks off, but I really really liked this champagne (for me – I’d go $45-50 all day, but for $85 I wanted a bit more). Tequila was mentioned as a tasting note. I actually got a tinge of that, but also heavy flavor of MOUTAI (a Chinese alcohol my bro brought back from Bejing). For me, it had a very good mid palate and a good long finish. My wife said it was her favorite…ever.

    Happy New Year All!!!

  • As an innkeeper in vermont, and one who feels, wine of all persuasions enhances the overall dining expereince and hence only we only mark our wines up $6 to $20 dollars above cost, we have had great success with Bollinger la Grande Annee 99′($95.00) and the Bruno Paillard Rose NV ($65.00) and both were big sellers on NYE.

P.S. our sister company is the Grafton Village Cheese company and our raw milk, cloth bound, cave aged cheddar should be a part of some of your tastings.

love the podcasts! Happy New Year!

Loved your show! I had a Cava from Spain that was a Pinot Noir Brut called “Elyssia” and it was just delicious! Very reasonablly priced. I started (cooking dinner) with a Grenache Rose-S.C. Pannell, I believe it was-quite good. Happy New Year, All!

    Happy New Year everyone.
Episodes like this one and the one on Barbaresco are awesome, constantly proving that price isn’t everything.
QOTD: Was working on New Years Eve so I didn’t get to pop any bubbly. I’ll probably be opening a Laetitia Winery Blanc de Blanc from Santa Barbara some time soon though.
