I think it’s funny that people criticize the guest for not being at the ready with marketing facts and for blowing this “web 2.0 opportunity”. Not so long ago, people used to criticize Gary (sometimes unfairly) for doing exactly that!

She’s certainly not the only guest on WLTV that hasn’t known much about wine. I didn’t really like today’s episode but I’d watch her over those College Humor losers. Well, ok, I wouldn’t really watch either but I would post meaner comments about the College Humour folks. But what can I say, the internet is a stupid place full of jerks!

Wow again, this time to the Lisa Buehler retaliation~! As a two week viewer I guess I’m surprised that a “professional” winemaker would come on and blast the very customers most inclined to buy her product? If no one qualified to talk intelligently about their products was available wouldn’t it have just been better to cancel the trip and interview? Bad business Buehlers~!

As far as Tommy B.’s comment that we are all going to get a “right ribbing”, you are joking, right? As a newbie trying to get caught up on the past 795 episodes this was total crap programming and I can’t imagine Gary NOT admitting that!!!!!

I know Ep. 796 won’t be indicative of the quality to come for 2010! 🙂

I now feel a little bad. I, like others, were probably too harsh considering, as BF put it, the show has consistently been a free form of entertainment and education and this woman appears to mean well. A few boring shows every once in a while should not cause me so much grief. On the other hand, I still feel that if you grew up in a wine family, went to college and then was asked to be on a very poplular wine show you should have the intelligence and awareness to: 1) be prepared to talk about the wines you brought and why you like them; 2) express your perspective of the industry and the area in which your work is focused; 3) to generally prepare to converse with a very knowledgeable and conversant host about the one subject matter for which you claim to have knowledge of – wine! At age 23 I probably would have sucked but I would have prepared for the predictable conversation that I agreed to partake in. she was not.

Didn’t get much out of this video, Gary, she was kind of clueless. i probably could have done a better job with the wines. If this chippie is what represents her parents’ vinyard, they are in trouble. I might suggest she take a few courses from winespectatorschool.com- they are running a special through 1/10. you were great as always.

I simply want to thank Helen for being on the show because I’ve had more fun reading the comments from this episode than I have watching the last 10 combined. Listen, did she fall on her face?…of course. However, I guarantee she won’t do another appearance/interview without studying up and being prepared. No one likes to be embarrassed (no matter how much you’re worth) and I hope this makes her more hungry to learn about wine and her family history. In ten years I hope she remembers this as a positive.

Not to mention that if she’s 23 years old that she has only been drinking wine for 2 years 😉

Just a quick comment on your retaliatory remarks on Gary Vaynerchuk’s website. I claim to have NO wine experience whatsoever. I am new to wine tasting and wine drinking and trying to learn more everyday.

What I DO have is business experience. I hold my M.B.A., have 20+ years in Management and Marketing, and I am an online business instructor. To call your customer base a group of “pathetic wine groupies” leaves me somewhat incredulous.

I know your instinct as a mother probably largely fueled your comments, however, as another poster mentioned you couldn’t have had a more captive audience to drum up interest in your wines than an online wine show!

I think she was doing her best and obviously wasn’t prepared for some of Gary’s questions. Big deal. She brought some of her parents’ wines and had a chat with Gary… why is this such a travesty to some of you? There are all types of people out there drinking and making wine folks…take it easy.

There is only one person who truly deserves criticism here and it is Gary. He knew all too well how this would go and clearly he hung on to the episode for a long time debating wether or not to run it. i.e. the Sanchez injury tell.

She was clearly not prepared by her family or Gary as to what kind of questions would be asked.

I don’t know about all this “pretty” stuff. She is young, fit and has sculpted eyebrows, if thats pretty, OK. Besides who cares what she looks like? Her voice has too much “Valley Girl” which does not help her case. But, not her fault.

Helen, don’t sweat all this… learn the game and you will be alright and 90% of the people would kill to be in your shoes. It is awesome that you have a deep respect for family run wineries in Napa, you have much to be proud of. Chalk this up to experience.

    Hi Gary,

I don’t have anything to add to the considerable comments on today’s show. I think all angles have been covered. I would like to say that my wife and I had a great time meeting and speaking with you last night in Greenville. We really enjoyed the intimate dinner party atmosphere and wine tasting. We’re glad we drove down from Charlotte and look forward to you visiting our city in the future.

I really liked today’s episode for the following reason: watching WLTV for past couple of years, I’ve laughed, been inspired, been pumped up, been even sad (in a very respectfully good way), but I’ve never been so f’ing pissed off until I saw today’s show.

GV: what do you pick up on the nose
    guest: it smells like wine
GV: how much does this wine go for
guest: i don’t know, i don’t have to pay for them

and what does she do for living: I sell wine but I want to make my own wine in the future…..

GV: how do you feel about chardonnays….
guest: i don’t like them because they are overly oaked and too butter…..
sounds like someone watched Sideways before coming on the show

she did smell currant from her family’s cab, first and only feedback with any sort of meaning…where’d she get that? from the label?

    i realize i’m being mean here, but i mean, you…never mind, I don’t wanna say worse things…

one more thing, she’s not even hot, cute at best. I’ve been plenty of real gorgeous women who know sh!t loads more about wine and have real passion for wine. GV, what the hell man…. and f the QOTD….i’m not answering it cause i’m so pissed off.

I don’t believe that Lisa Buehler needs to apologize to anyone for her comments. Some people were unduly harsh to her daughter, and I’m glad that tried to defend her. If anything it makes me more interested in buying wine from them. At least you know there’s a real family behind name.

The internet is such a safe place to criticize people. It’s too bad that people forget that normal humans with normal feelings read their comments.

This date in Beuhler Family history:

January 5, 2010: Lacking even the slightest shred of business acumen or common sense, 23-year-old Helen Beuhler appears on the most popular, viral, wine consumer-oriented media outlet and drags her family’s brand through the mud.

January 6, 2010: Helen’s defensive mother retaliates against Vayner Nation, calling them “pathetic wine groupies,” thereby driving another nail into thousands of unsold cases of Beuhler Cabernet.

“You are all pathetic wine groupies”…..I didn’t know this was an insult….we love wine and we have passion for wine….I don’t think any of us would be pissed off if some ordinary 23 year old came on the show and had absolutely nothing “technical” to say. We’ve had guests likes that, but they’ve also conceded the fact that they don’t know much about wine and showed the necessary humility. One would assume that a person who “sells wine and wants to make my own wine,” grew up in Napa in a wine making family, and who supposedly came on the show to represent the vineyard, would show some sort of passion. But yes, I do apologize for being harsh…everyone have their own norms in life and I can’t get pissed off just because someone doesn’t share the same logic. Other people were busy working at the winery and with children….so she was sent…that again doesn’t seem like a valid excuse for me….but I guess I’m just a pathetic wine lover.
