Hey maw, who do we send to the big city? We are all to busy having babies! We’ll send Helen! But she knows nothin bout the business. Well she’s “cute” so they won’t notice.

I know why everyone is so upset – 5 days into January and we see the first show of the year and it is mediocre. Helen – sounds like this is a bit of a harsh learning experience for you… but take it and run with it – you are in an tremendous (and very lucky) position to have your family name on a label of good wine. Don’t be afraid to “geek it up” a bit – that’s what we all watch for. You could read the alphabet and captivate an audience and I can only imagine that with some experience and some guidance you’ll find success in the business. You too will have your own gaggle of ‘pathetic wine groupies’.

You are right on point. This episode looked bad from the start, it didn’t have any components to be great and it should have been shelved or better yet trashed.
I even asked myself if there was an agenda, not sure if there was but it crossed my mind.

Chill out Lisa Buehler. We Vaniacs call it as we see it. I never even heard of your winery, but I bet your sales go through the roof now because of us.

That family should give the hook and get a new family spokesperson. She is a “Cindy Lauper” type “Valley Girl” speaking about wine. LOL

    TOTAL Clueless and into herself.

Also, I don’t drink Napa Valley wines anymore after someone I met up there told me the Napa Valley ground water is some of the MOST polluted in the World thanks to the wine industry dumping chemicals and fertilizers in the ground for a hundred years!

    From fermentation.typepad.com blog…

“I might add that all the game fish (steelhead and salmon) disappeared from the Napa River in 1997. Local fishermen now report catching trash fish with cancerous sores and birth defects. The cause is most likely pollution runoff from poisons and chemicals used extensively in Napa Valley vineyards.
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation lists Napa County in the top 20 pesticide/acre users-polluters of the 53 counties in the state. I’ve personally seen water pumped out of underground collection tanks in the Spring that was actually blue, not clear. All this water flows directly to the Napa River.
A biologist I met estimated that 80% or more of the birds, bats, bees, butterflies and other insects and many wildlife species are now gone from the valley, due to pollution. Like the canary in the mine, these statistics are indicators of something deadly beyond loss of habitat.
An informal, unpubished survey of 135 male and female vineyard workers (all Mexican) conducted in 2001 turned up abnormally high rates of birth defects and asthma in children and chemical poisonings of vineyard workers in the valley. The study was undertaken secretly at the urging of a physician at the local hospital who noticed an abnormal number of children of vineyard workers with serious illnesses that the children of nonworkers did not present. Having studied biology, epidemiology, health care management and viticulture, I informally consulted on the study, reviewiing the alarming findings. No one would publish it or follow up on it. The doctor said he was too scared to be involved for fear he would lose his job at Kaiser. I personally gave it to the Napa County Board of Supervisors, who refused to investigate this public health matter.
Is it any wonder that Sonoma County, which is more eco-friendly, now gets more gold medals for their wine than Napa Valley vintners do?”

    Nice!

I’ll buy my wine some where else. She can start her winery and grow two heads!

  • Wow, I had to come back and check out the comments and one must say, I have watched since the get-go and commented on over 90% of the episodes and I will say, this is the most . . . hmmm . . . intriguing, insightful and yet, diverse comments about our honored guest.

People are fired up (to say the least) which is what the Vayner Nation is all about. We follow day-in and day-out the travels and travails of our hero Gary V and we come to expect and receive the likes of Randall Grahm and Wayne Gretzky. We are spoiled, yes, we are geeks, most of us, yes, but we accept and appreciate all who may want to “expand their palates.” That is what our guru preaches and we follow him. “Expand your palate.” We did not experience any inkling of our mantra and given this guest, well, we were taken aback about her lack of knowledge of a product and position we all wish were had the opportunity to enjoy. Yes, we are jealous of her positions but above all, we are educated in this genre because we have been taught by the best! Gary V

One more thing, geez, I almost forgot. To each his/her own as I say but I have travelled the world and two cities definitely stand out above all the rest and that is San Fran and Paris. I just don’t understand and won’t blame it on “youth.” From a wine perspective, Paris is in the “O” category let alone history, etc etc.

    Cheers!

    P.S. Go Colts and J-E-T-S!

P.S.S. Gary: If the Jets play the Colts, I will get us tickets and pay YOUR way to Lucas Field. 🙂

I think all the “she’s only 24” comments are pretty funny. When I was “only 24”, I was just getting out of Law School … and if I messed up even a little in any interview, my CV got tossed to the circular file. 24 is not a 16 year old kid, it’s a full-blown adult. And if she’s out representing the business, there’s no excuse to be so unprepared – especially if appearing on a dedicated wine program.

She’s seems like a nice girl and all, but I equate her not knowing what her own family’s wine retails for with the time Bush Sr. was filmed at the supermarket and marveled at the checkout scanner that everyone else who actually had been buying groceries for the last 20 years was intimately familiar with … at the very least, she had a chance to generate some interest and publicity in the family wines, and instead she came off as somewhat immature and elitist.

Hopefully she’ll take the comments in stride and learn from it. I mean it’s really not that big of a deal – it’s not like she popped into the forums looking for PayPal transfers to cover her cruise ticket or anything.

  • OK show. She does not like Paris? is she BFF with Paris Hilton and crew? haha. Very young very inexperienced, but she is 2nd or 3rd generation so they mature slowly since there is no hurry. I’m not being mean, like others below, just the facts.
Hey, this is a learning experience, right? In 10 years when you have experience, I’ll be in your groupie list. Your family should make your focus and create facebook, twitter and things for your current winery. Do a video blog on your website, follow the wine making process. Your age category can put your family to the next level. Do a weekly 10 minute video around the vineyard/winery/tasting room. Become youtube famous! Go, Girl! Your inexperience is your leverage! Your heritage is an asset here! “I don’t pay for wine” was cute, not stupid.
Heck, become the director of operations – that must be an easy job. right, Gary? snicker.

Not much left to say. I thought Helen was shockingly unprepared and clearly has no passion for wine. You two couldn’t be more different.

QOTD: Absolutely bring in someone to help. I think any good organization brings in talent wherever they can find it. I think it shows the Jets can think out of the box; always a good sign. Best of luck this weekend! We’re all pulling for you!

GV, if I were you I’d be embarrassed, not by the show, but by the rude comments your ‘followers’ made here. Isn’t the show about showcasing new and different wines? Is the guest the main event? You tasted and rated the wines Helen brought and now your ‘followers’ can decide if they want to try any of the wines. You may want to give them all a good slap upside the head for being such neanderthals!!!

I am at a total loss to see why some people bash this nice girl for what see did and said on this episode. Gary himself always says that one should say what you think about wine. “It smells like wine!” Thats not the most amazing answer but lets be honest: Isn’t she right? I mean whats the big deal hear? She calls us pathetic wine groupies and some of you guys are mad at her for that? I thought that people who watch this show are more grown up than that.

I feel bad for the people who really make buehler vineyards work from the wine maker to the Garcias and Hernendezes who work the fields while a clueless daughter and the mother who condones and defends such a display give the vineyard a bad name. Que lastima….

I watch the show to hear Gary and to learn about the wines. This show accomplished that so. The girl obviously didn’t put her best foot forward and represent her family business that well on a wine show. But that’s OK, I hope she’ll learn from this and be better for it. I’d recommend she read each and every comment and then respond back with a message right on this forum. And I liked the idea I read here about posting a video on her family’s website documenting her (and our) education in her familiy’s business. That would be sweet.

btw, I had the Buehler 2006 Cab at a restaurant a few weeks ago and it was mighty good – nice dark fruit and some earthiness on the nose and on palate a medium body good complexity and balance with dark fruit and some wood.

Mama Buelher’s witless retort is doubly ironic considering her middle name.
Hey, Lisa, I assume you have an ownership stake in the fam’s bizness.
And since you do, I pledge this.
I’ll never pay a Dollar for a bottle of Buehler wine.
Something I’m sure Princess Helen can relate to.

Your Guest seems pretty cool, must be great to work with her.

    HEY EVERYONE READ THIS!!!

    Hey Gary,
Good to see you back in the new year. I’ll admit this was not my favorite show of late, but I generally don’t care that much for guest episodes anyway. The camera wasn’t great either.

But that isn’t what I really want to get at. I’d just like to say that I am baffled by the comments on this episode. I absolutely love to “nerd up” wine as much as humanly possible but I realize that to some people (no matter what their background or circumstance) wine is about enjoyment and not about analysis. Gary, what I loved about Crush It was how you talk about finding your passion (whatever it may be) and representing it. Helen is obviously passionate about family businesses and getting people’s support for them. She did not come on the show to analyze wines she came on to get the word out about her family’s business and other family owned wineries in the area. I can understand why some viewers were somewhat disappointed by this episode but the onslaught of insulting comments was uncalled for.

What a hot interview. I don’t have time to watch it twice. Very cool. Make some videos from the store(wine/cheese on location or examine the structure/organization of a wine store for people that would love to go but are intimidated by the millions of bottles that stores have). Love the shows. Amazing work dude.

  • glenn

I guess I will have to watch this one now won’t I? When 23 I was a 2nd year med student and pretty much a smart FU so I won’t toss any stones.

Crazy how this became such a big event!

Helen- if you are invited to promotional event, please do your Homework you looked like Paris Hilton at a college lecture.

Mrs.Buehler-Welcome to the 21st century. You guys got caught, cowboy up or piss 75,000 real and potential customers.

Vaynernation-Harsh but true, world needs more straight shooters.

Gary- Thanks for pulling no punches and airing this when you knew it would flop for the Buehlers! And part of the reason is like 2 weeks and no new content!
