Where are you at in Bay Area? I'm in Fremont and often host bites and sips food and wine pairings. I, regretably, have to charge a nominal fee to cover costs (usually $20-$30 to taste 6 wines) but I have 400+ wines to chose from and am unabashedly a great cook (people pay me to do it).
We always have fun and usually taste and rate blind.

When is Sasha going to have a show from his wine cellar? Dolcetto is my go to wine as it usually goes down well at family gatherings and is affordable at under $16. I am going to try a Cantina del Pino 07 Dolcetto this weekend.

  • Since this weekend I can't say CH-E-F-S, CHEFS, CHEFS, CHEFS…I'll say J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS! Oh, and G…looking a little bit like a carny if'n you ask me 😉

  • That beard makes you look Russian. 🙂

  • amgryger

    Roagna is pretty good.

  • divyamistry

    Nice and tight episode.

And while I'm here, all I want to say is that the Myth of deuterostome organelle genome stability has been exposed using hypervariability of ascidian mitochondrial gene order… which is great… but I had nothing to do with it!

  • Braden G

Yep, just checked my provincial liquor board catalogue and neither of the good ones were available. Remember when you asked on FB a few days ago “what can I do for you?”

Break down the BS trade wall that prevents you from shipping to Canada… dude, you would have a $100Million store in no time! Just sayin'

John, that is very ironic.  I have really liked Havens’ wines and have recently found several varietals discounted.  On wtso.com I, too, just bought the Havens Merlot. It is a very good wine.  Add me to the list but please use a different email: [email protected]  Thanks, Joe

Do I have the floor? Yes I do… You remind me allot of my sister. Before you flip out let me explain. My sister is intelligent, passionate about everything she does, honest to the bone and sincere in everything she says. She is a successful antripanuor that has built a life around doing something she loves. Each time I watch one of your clips I ask myself why am I not going after the things I love. Each time I talk to my sister I ask myself the same question.

On a side note: this is my first post under the new layout. I like it.

  • gubbiotti

so happy to see a good dolcetto show. dolcetto and barbera have been my tasty value wines this year.

“qotd” – I think that people let their taste get in the way of their curiosity. it can be wine, music, art… whatever. especially in art. i know that is a small part of the pie. but i make art, sooo… wine is exactly the same though
    have a good weekend
ps – GV i am digging all the posts on FB!

  • johnfarrin

You know I love ya but get ready to shave.

  • stac

fairly new watcher, absolutely love the show…. and your style. bought 2 wines … 07 passagno pinot and 05 peachy canyon petite sirah… thanks and cant wait for the next show and my wine

  • John__J

Gary, wondering if we can look forward to having a vin jaune on 1 of these days? love the show, especially the ones highlighting varietals and/or regions you barely hear about. & with vin jaune being as rare and unique as it is… We've seen a ton of red, white, even rose. Can ya give the yellow just 1 chance?
As a side note, gotta tell someone about this awesome wine I just got. A bottle of the 1999 Royal Tokaji Essencia. Total freak luck, and a really good friend in the restaurant industry. Got a steal of a $ too. Had heard about it, but never expected to see one, as there's only 1200 bottles produced. Didn't even realize how awesome it was til after I got it & really started to read up on it as much as I could. I try not to spend more than $25 on a wine usually, but I figured this was worth the splurge.

  • Green Pea

I hit submit before spell checking (Antripanuor?) WTF… Business person

  • Roagna Dolcetto FTW. That stuff's great and even though I know it'll never make it on Cindy, I wouldn't mind seeing it on the free shipping page so I can stock up a few more.

I have a Sagrantino decanting over in the kitchen for an Italian dinner with Mom (she was sick Xmas Day, so she couldn't make it over then). A few weeks back, she says to me that she really doesn't like white wines all that much.

Why is that, I ask her. I know she likes a glass now and then, but I really hadn't noticed.

Because she doesn't like drinking them chilled. She'd rather have them close to room temp.

  • John__J

And feel free to have your dad on as much as possible. Love when you have him on the show.

  • benkearney

    QOTD: “Something.”

  • Phaser

    OK,
It is the first time in a long time I had a great day at work. It is a bit hard in Michigan right now. But I stopped and picked up a bottle if Ice Wine on the way home and am opening it tomorrow with the wife and going to play card with here and kick the kids out.

    so there.

  • NY Pete

27-17 JETS … that is all.

  • Did Gary ever show up yesterday Pete? I waited for him for 45 min…no show 🙁

  • I had to log back in to say 1 more thing…”PATRIOTS SUCK” …I thought I would never say that 🙁

  • NY Pete

Derek, after 60 minutes I split too … let's ask chateaumiller how long he waited

  • Matt C

Bill Hicks tells it like it is…if you don't know, ya better find out!

  • I'm going to my favorite restaurant tonight and I plan on drinking some great wine. If anyone is ever in Stamford, CT check out Napa & Co. Amazing food, good atmosphere and a great wine list. I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and/or loved ones.

    Final thought…Jets win 24-17

  • Kyle

Hey Gary- this is actually related to the QOTD yesterday, but it really is frustrating for me to watch these episodes and then find the wine is sold out @ WL (such is the case w/ the third wine from today) because regardless of your affiliation w/ WL, I'd buy it from there anyways just because I've found you guys have the best prices and great customer service.
I know you don't want this to be a selling platform- maybe you could just always link to the wineries website and not to the WL site? Or to wine searcher ala cindy wine? That way if we go out to find it, we can choose to search for it @ WL and not have to assume it'll be sold out if you give it a great review.
Regardless- love the show- long time lurker, I'll try to comment more this year.

Only 61 comments and Sold out already? You're getting too popular GV.

  • philct

QOTD: I once loved, LOVED Ruffino Riserva Ducale.. until I watched WLTV.. It really was the only wine I drank.. Now, GV ruined it for me by expanding my palate and turning me on to so many better Italian wines… I tried the Ruffino when you tasted it on a long ago episode.. Garbage truck on the nose, and no thunder at all.. I wouldn't but it for my worst enemy now!! Keep on with the double, quadruple thumbs downs!!!

  • I like this desire to breakin' it down more this year; i really like the comparison analysis against other varietals…like the mouthfeel is light a heavy pinot noir or heavy barolo…that coupled with your usual flamboyant, subject descriptions work very well.

I forgot to comment on this for yesterday's episode, but despite my mad respect for Mr. SV, I'd still like you to stick with the <10 cases rule. I realize some people are frustrated when the wines you review sell out fast or can't find it locally, but that rule is one of the major foundations that shows your integrity hence corroborating your name brand.

  • jeffisrad

Fascinating show, Gary. Fascinating on several levels.

    1. Never had a Dolcetto before, and looking forward to my first this weekend.
    2. I am intrigued not only by how much you loved the last wine, but just as much about how much you hated the first wine. So much so, that I am dying to try the first wine.
    3. I am impressed by the number of responses that have been posted, and probably will be posted, based on a “Question of the Day” which was NOT, in fact, a question.

Having said that, here is my question for everyone:

What is the one thing you own that you would actually pay somebody to take from you?

    Question for Gary:

How's about you send me a bottle of your least favorite wine of ALL TIME?

  • guymandude

I think it would be cool to go down stairs one day and go up to someone buying wine and say let's go try this on WLTV with them and make their day, well, you hope it would.

PS. My ex-wife is a hooker.

  • guymandude

My house, oh wait that was my ex-wife

  • wayno daa wino

Yo G, Even though San Diego/Temecula is me Home-Towns, I would not be aaalll
that broken-hearted to see the JETS kick the SH*T out of the Chargers!!!!!

  • they have wine upstairs too, but i see your point….ummm….hopefully she wasn't hookin' when she wasn't an ex….?

  • adrums

Conan is getting totally screwed. Everyone should donate serious bones to Haiti.

  • SourGrapesFC

Nice show, GV. I was looking at some Dolcettos in the liquor store yesterday, but I ended up buying some bombers of Saison instead (sometimes beer wins, though I'll probably go for Italian wine next time).

QOTD: (Since Gary brought up the NBC debacle), if you haven't seen it yet, you should check out Jimmy Kimmel on Leno's “10 at 10” segment. Jimmy hits Leno with some pretty hard shots on his own show. Priceless.

  • Agent Orange

QOTD: I say keep the beard and then become the Jets play-by-play announcer. From then on we can all affectionately refer to you as “Harry-Gary”.

  • DFbwp

QOTD: Okay, here's my comment of the day. I don't like going into wine stores where the salesmen try to lord their knowledge over you. It's like going into work out lifting weights and someone comes up to you and says, “You know, you're doing it wrong.” Anyone in the Raleigh-Durham area know a wine store where they actually help you rather than try to out-snob you?

  • TheStuCul

Gary, after watching today it dawned on me that i'm still baffled by what to buy when I go to the store. I've seen probably 400 of 801 and just can't remember what you suggest… Idea… iphone app or mobile WLTV so that I have easy access to your recommendations at the wine store. I'd order from you but frikin' KY shipping rules suck!

  • SourGrapesFC

better than the other way around

  • DFbwp

Oh– and concerning the Chargers-Jets: have to go with my man Philip Rivers to find a way to win.

  • DFbwp

bones to Haiti, I'll second that emotion.

  • Katie Marquez

Thank you! I just finished this and it was fantastic! Exactly what I’ve been hoping to see. Now I just need to see him do that again with a Champagne so we can see that champagne glass sing. Wow. Cy, (if you see this comment) you really need to watch this episode. I think you’d really appreciate it.

  • My comment of the day for all the football fans out there – I'm working with the NFL and Ticketmaster on their 1st social media campaign for Super Bowl XLIV. Stay tuned for more details 🙂

As for wine, trying a new bottle or two every week and enjoying the experience. I learn not only from Gary but many of the other Vayniacs on which wines to try and I want to thank you all for that.

  • iseegrapes

Could it be true? Wine Library will be shipping to Mass in the near future?

  • ONUMello

Here's what I've got to say: THANK YOU, GARY!!!
I got home today to find a very unexpected package and my jaw is still on the floor. All I did was buy a $15 book and listen to a little Ustream technical difficulty… and you gave SO MUCH in return! I was just expecting something like the Gourmet Library coupon, but in addition to that you gave two wristbands, a 101 Wines book, a wine tote, and above all the free shipping code?? And something else to come?? That's easily worth 10-20+ times what you got for the book.
At first I thought you had lost your mind and was questioning how you can stay in business giving your supporters something so generous (I know I'll cost WL tons with the code), until I realized that if not before, you have definitely gained a loyal customer for life. I can't wait until whenever I get the chance to meet you, shake your hand and say “thank you” in person.

On a note related to the episode, I recently had a dolcetto as part of an Italian wine flight at at local restaurant, and it was also very silky. I wish I remembered what it was called, but I have another in the cellar- I'll open it tonight & add my tasting notes here & of course Cork'd.

    Thanks again! -David (@ONUMello)

  • So moving from amarone to dolcetto, will it be ripasso next?
Well, I'm a 48 year old dude that is in to wine and chocolate, and life. Well wine the last 5 years, chocolate the last 10 years and life the last 48 :D. Hi all vayniacs., lets trade wine tips.
Have tried to become a forum guest, but that failed, I slipped when verifying my age and WL demanded a verification of my age, so nah, don't think so. I know I'm 48 and not under 21.
Well, I'm a member of cork'd and try to write a review at least every week as I try to “try new things” (wine and chocolate every week) Got my own ChocolateTV where I every monday review a couple of chocolates. It's just for fun, but it's fun. Sorry it's in swedish only, but I have held a chocolate tasting in english for my brothers mother in law and wife ( they all live i Oregon City, OR) and I think I could pull it off on video too. Maybe that's my next thing!
So much wine and so little money is becoming my motto, anyone feel the same? Have a nice weekend and see you monday!

  • Aurelius46

    Gary!

Been a huge lurker on you're show for about a month now and your QOTD (or lack there of) inspired me to finally leave a comment! You talk big about the Bordeaux region but I see hardly any love to the Carmenere grape which was originally grown in Bordeaux. It has amazing history with it being wiped out in France and now does well in Chilie. I was a big Piot Nior and Merlot fan until I watched an episode from Three Sheets that turned me on to this specific grape. Now, I am in love with this brand of wine and everyone I let sample this grape falls in love with it to! Also I live in the Little Rock, Ar and struggle to find good liquor stores with a large selection of wine. Got any suggestions? Huge NFL fan btw Jets 21 SDG 20
