WLTV after 801 episodes is still the BEST… keep it up GV

  • Love me some Italian wines. These last two shows have been great examples of what “The Boot” has to offer.

  • DFbwp

    DItto on the Carmenere.

  • DFbwp

I’ve heard Wine Authorities is good. Thanks. I’ll check out your suggestions.

  • 1st time ever, two comments on one show.

It would be cool to know who 'likes' our comments. As far as I can tell, you can only see the # of likes. Developers, where are you?

  • Though I have had few Dolcettos, I will make sure to procur some of the last one. Just wish I had it for tomorrow's games with my world infamous chili!

You came up with some great snippets tonight i must say: “Suck junk” “Right & tight” one can use that in a variety of ways but above all “bones” is a mainstay and I love it so much I use it my every day vernacular. I can take many things from knowing you and watching these shows and “bones” will be with me forever. DO NOT STOP USING IT!

On to the show. I loved it. I adore Italian wines. I had the Gravina white the other night that I won through one of your charitable events and it was magnificent. Not what anyone would ever imagine what a white wine would taste like. Surreal.

QOTD: 1) You are oh so fortunate to be able to work with your Dad. Some of us never saw or spoke to our Dads. 2) I love Mozart 3) My passions are wine and tennis and, of course, the Colts. 4) My son, Randy, is the joy and love of my life . . . forever. 5) I am wishing for a Jets and Colts AFC championship game 6) I'm a die-hard Republican who said we had no business going into Iraq (oh oh getting political) 7) The wine that gave me goosebumps and turned me onto wine: 1988 Dominus (duh) 8) Most influential person (in my opinion) in our history other than Jesus . . . Socrates 9) Top 5 Presidents: Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, Reagan and to end my final top 10 though it belongs at the top goes to 10) Your show. It has given me more pleasure the past four years than the previous nine. Well, except my son of course.

    Go Jets and Colts!

    Cheers!!!

Awsome comment. I love Mozart. I agree Gary needs to ignore the haters.

qotd. more people should put themselves out their like you! We are all so bound up in our sense of self, and have far too many inhibitions. Thanks for the great show.

  • Katie Marquez

Great show. I do love Italian wines and always want to know more about them. I tasted a Lambrusco last night that reminded me quite a bit of Brachetto. That was kind of fun.

QOTD: So I've been mulling over this all day at work today, and finally decided that I would like to know how people feel about using the “proper” wine glass. I always thought that it was just kinda' show, or propriety, or tradition, but not all that important really. Then one day a wine shop guy was bored and we were the only customers and had asked him about it, so he poured us the same (wonderful) Barolo in 3 different glasses (a white wine, pinot, and Barolo glass) and they tasted like 3 completely different wines. That being said, I only own 3 different styles and pretty much use the same one for everything.

I think I'd like to see, Gary, something kind of like a vertical tasting: the same wine but in a variety of different glasses. Maybe it will be decided that the glass matters pretty little, OR that instead of wine we all need to spend the next year buying every different Reidel glass out there.

  • i liked it, I thought it was fun the way I was able to do it from the crowd and bring the audience into the kind of events I get to go to.

  • thnx so much MikeyZ

I LOVE Carmenere (and Malbec, for a lot of the same reasons) and also feel like it is a bit ignored. I haven't looked at all the archives yet, but I'll always cast my vote for Carmenere tastings. (And for Chilean and Argentinian tastings in general. I feel like everything that comes out of there is delicious.)

    Gary,

Hope I?m not being a pest but after watching episode # 682 please read on as I sent this e-mail to you on May 8th and never heard back from you:

I came across this person in a audio/video series in the NYT and immediately thought of you and the possibility of having her on as a possible guest of WLTV. Alexandra Elman is a 40 year old wine taster living in the Upper East Side of NYC who happens to be blind. After listening to her story (click on 2 minutes audio below) I thought she was the real deal and could provide new insite to the Vayner Nation. Her current clients are Tia Pol. Solera, Cru, Pure Food and Wine, NY Athletic Club, and Chambers Street Wine.

Cheers from a long time WLTV fan (over 2 years) who continues to expand his palate. (currently loving Portugese wines from the Dao)

  • thank u for this “thank u” it means a lot to me, more then anything!

  • PT I will look for the email

    Gary,

I listened to your streaming interview today. I liked it when you said you wanted to punch AT&T in the neck! And I think you called people who add other people on Twitter just to get followers “Ass clowns.” Ha ha… I think we would have hung out in High School.

I like your passion for Football, but when are you going to start talking about the best sport in the world? MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)! Does anyone follow UFC or MMA?

And last, I think if anyone rivals Gary in the customer service business, it's Dana White (The President of the UFC).

Enjoyed you bringing the thunder as always. I'll be at the Jets game on Sunday, hope to see you with all the other Jets fans over in G-3.

Btw my prediction all week has been Jets by a fieldgoal! I say 24-21 J-E-T-S!

Was just reading about borello and dolcetto and how you can inexpensively, obviously a relative term, stay at one of the many fine vineyards in the region under the European Agratourisimo initiative. Sounds like a slice of heaven to me. Question: have you ever met Gilly Goolden and would you invite her on the show. what you're doing for me now, here in the US, she did for twenty years in the UK. She has the toatl “chops”N and rarely steered me wrong i hear she doing the travel show now so i'm sure she will be in the states at some point. I know you would enjoy her she is insanely English but super knowledgeable and a real sport. What is it with cab Franc and petit Bourdeaux i kow you get excited when you see them in the mix and I'm finding them a good indicater of value in blended wine. e.g, Columbia Crest Merlot -Cab: 80% merlot; 5% cab franc; 15% cabernet. 7 BONES!!!! fruit, black tea, and tannins all twisting into a long silky smooth finish with spice hints. some minerality and definite string anneheim pepper notes in the mid palate.. 7 bones! Love the show i shall lurk no more.

Long time, first time. You never discuss whether any of the wines you taste on the show are corked. Any chance that Camerano (62 undrinkable) was corked? Have any of the wines you've tasted on the show ever been corked! Maybe a topic for one of your shows. Keep up the good work. Would love to see you at sea!

  • we have had 6 or so wines that have been corkd on the show…

  • plcb

As I watched today's show I was thinking, 'this is a show I need to send to my non-Vayniac friends'. To take a varietal and have 3 completely different experiences is such a great lesson in discovering new varietals and wine in general. I sound like a reality show when I say I'm enjoying this journey. I want my friends to experience even an ounce of what I find fascinating about expanding my palate and trying new wine.

Fun fact about myself…I work for the PLCB and I buy my wine in Delaware.

  • cmdshiftdesign_liz

Had a GaryV moment last night. Went out to a stone-oven pizza joint with some girlfriends and one of them looked over the wine list and said “I really want to order a Chardonnay, but you're supposed to drink red wine with Italian food, right?” I told her “You order what you like, don't worry about what you're supposed to do. Just have what's going to make you happy and make your meal as enjoyable as it can be!” She liked that reply and got what she wanted.

  • Thanks. Listening to Mozart's Concerto with Flute & Harp while enjoying a nice glass of Champagne, well, it doesn't get much better than that.

  • WineWoman

Sorry, my prediction for the game is not in the Jets favor. 24-17 Chargers.
Wish I had some of the Aldo Conterno to wash my pizza down with, instead of the Diet Coke I'm drinking. Ian recommended a Cammerano wine on his previous staff pick–hope it wasn't the dolcetto–think it was a barolo or brunello. Glad you tasted the Cammerano on the show because I might have bought it knowing the producer was a staff pick. Thanks Gary. You saved me 20 Bones–that's BONES–The Lovely BONES!!

  • Geez, forgot my Jet/Chargers and Colts/Ravens predictions. Saints and Vikings win though the Saints game will be close.

    Jets 24 Chargers 20
    Colts 30 Ravens 17

    Book it Dano!

QOTD I'm going to Rincon, Puerto Rico tomorrow, good bye Jersey, hello sunshine!

I like the dolcetto and barbera. Good vino

It is so much fun to tune in to WLTV and see what is up! Am learning a lot, pretty much a wine newbie, so I don't have a lot to compare to. However, terms like “dried tobacco” and “dirt” certainly give a vivid picture of what to avoid and why!
I follow folks who work with crafts, with coffee, folks in the tech sector and folks who work in education. I can't go a week without seeing a reference to garyvee in each of those areas, Pretty cool! Party on!

  • C_Shorty

No laid back Friday couch? I've been passing the Dolcettos on the shelf for quite some time now. I'd say it's time to grab one.

Open mic night instead of QOTD? Ok. Let's talk football. It's a bit sad slightly sad football-wise for me. On the college end my Penn State Nittany Lions are losing recruits at an alarming rate. Mostly to Florida, I guess they were hurting for talent. Oh how I hate Urban Meyer. On the pro side, I do love the playoff action but it's not near as much fun when you're a fan of the Detroit Lions.

Ok, no more open mic night, it gets me depressed.

Happy thought for the weekend, taking the little 3 month old man to Ohio to meet a ton of family!

Ooooh there is a sentence in there where I must have fallen asleep while typing. oops.

Wine Glasses, How Do They Affect Wine? ? Episode #111

  • laurieinvt

Good show, as always (well, 95% of the time, anyway!)
It was a nice break from a hellish week of both local and distant tragedy.

Given the choice between Disney and the local fair, I much prefer the weirdos and the funnel cake! Way more fun!

    Hi Gary,

Enjoyed the episode. I don’t believe I’ve tried any Dolcetto wines. I’ll keep an eye out next time I’m at the local wine shops.

QOTD – I’m going to keep pushing the two small wineries in the Sierra Foothills area of California. Jeff Runquist (http://www.jeffrunquistwines.com/) and Mt Vernon Winery (http://mtvernonwinery.com/) are my two favorite local wineries in my neck of the woods. I’m sure you get a BILLION requests for you to taste wines…but I would be blown away if you had a Runquist wine (right now the 07 Barbara is great!) on your show. What are the odds of that happening?

I hope to start a wine blog soon just for fun…focused on easy-to-find value plays…that appeal to the unrefined pallet 🙂 Hopefully we can link each other up in the future!

After lirking for a couple hundred episodes thought I would post.

Lets talk football, my Bears need a new offensive cordinator. Luckly everything looks up for my Hawkeyes. Recuiting class is looking nice, not losing many starters, Getting Jewel Hampton back I think he is going to be better than Shaun Green on Gary's Jets. We got Adrian Clayborn coming back who is NFL ready, I wish it was fall already.
