The Italian wines bring some serious thunder. I am still waiting for more Barolo and Vino Nobile tastings. I will try to find the last 2 Dolcettos you tasted today.

For your sake, I will pull for the Jets, but the Cards are the team I care about.

Will you be in the Phoenix area any time soon? It would be great to meet you!

  • Here's my Q: you are at ep #801…
Which site has the most vlog episodes ever?

  • Go, Vikings! Go, Jets! Go, Ravens! Go, Saints or Cardinals!

I know nothing about wine (I rarely drink) but I wanted to check out WLTV because I'm reading Crush It! right now and I wanted to see what you've got going here. Very cool!

Love your energy and expertise. And most of all, your realness.

  • drew82

Jets go down, but go down fighting. Bolts 27 Jets 17.

QOTD: I have newfound respect for what you do Gary. I go to tastings regularly and know what I'm doing now, so when I went to a wine and food fest recently, I planned on tasting everything. Easily over a hundred wines. I spit them all (except one) and still hit the wall around wine 30. Everything tasted the same and I just could not stomach tasting many more (i tried anyway). So, mad props to you and your skills. Your palette must be the equivalent of a Kenyan marathoner. I will try to avenge my poor showing at the next wine fest here in upstate ny. Feb. 13, Romancing the Grape at Proctors Schenectady! Woooo!

I have 2 things on my mind right now –
    1) Shouldn't Conan just turn everything on it's ear and go to the web? Couldn't he put an end to late night TV as we know it? He is absolutely killing NBC!
    2) Has anyone been tried judging food competitions as a way to expand the palate and practice tasting notes in a new venue? A friend mentioned judging BBQ contests and I thought this was brilliant.
    3) Chargers 49-10 – Gary shave it all and them some

Don't know if anyone will see this. I am on midnight shift so I'm posting late
I grew up in Delaware lived in south Jersy for a year. I went to highschool in Seminole FL. I now live in Tuscaloosa Alabama where I work for Mercedes Benz as maintenace technician. That means I fix and program robots.

My mom got me into gormet food and wine from an early age. Just recently I decided that I should learn somthing about wine. I was just looking for stuff about wine on Youtube when I stumbled across Gary. I was immediately hooked. I owe a huge amount to Gary. Wine is awesome. I can't read or watch or talk enough about wine, much to my wife's dismay.
My other passions are music and obviously cars. Mozart, Bach, Beethovan and Led Zeppelin, Yes, Rush.
If anyone here lives in Tampa Bay please let me know of a good wine shop in Seminole Clearwater area. I want to treat my parents when I go down to visit them this year.
Thanks Vayniacs, you are all great and thanks Gary and Mott you guys are awesome.

    Jets: 26, Chargers: 0.
I had the Cuvee Gilbert Gruet Grande Reserve tonight – my friends and I did our annual Christmas progressive dinner, a little late this year – and I just loved it. It was my favorite bubbly of the season. It is from my hometown, and I don't usually like wines from my hometown, but this was really good.
I'm tired of people avatars. I thought my cat Babyface might enjoy standing in for me.

Sorry. I forgot to log on first!!!
New system a little difficult on iPhone.

Loving the trek to 900 Gary. Good luck this weekend with your jets. I am only rooting for them because of you.

My score prediction is Jets 24 Chargers 23.

QODish My fav epi has got to be the cereal paring. It was first and still my favorite

Funny! I went to Astor to look for new dolcetto to try as I really loved the Roagna but was disappointed with another dolcetto that I tried from there that the escapes me. I was eventually convinced to try a Barbera d'asti to mix it up a bit. Loved it but am excited to try out that last wine from today! Such a great varietal! Great with food but so yummy alone as well!

  • Dominic C.

I can totally relate. My first tasting was one with over 80 wines and that was insane. I got to 20 something before feeling trashed and taking a break but ended up leaving. Not knowing when the next tasting of that magnitude but it'll be ready with a bottle of water or two.

It must be a great level of experience on the wine tasters to be able to blast through so many tastings like robert parker who I hear does 100's a day!

  • Pat__B

    GV,

What is your New Year's wine resolution?

  • Dominic C.

    I like that label, btw.

    Say something:

I recently was very sick with Bronchitis for 3 weeks, and in that time I healed myseld naturally, using meditation, sweat, guzzling orange juice, chicory, and tea, and it was a profound experience. I could not talk, and yet I found a deeper, realer inner voice.

In that time I wrote a lot, some crazy stuff, some rather interesting… here is a poem I wrote as I was almost through the darkness of Bronchitis and was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel… I hope you enjoy it.

Many will act with nothing to say, like a dream that hides in sleep, while others just simply give it away, a secret they really should keep. Still others float through life like a shimmering cloud, they just become part of the sky. Looking for that which has already found them to carry them into the Light.

  • I learned a lot from today's show.

A few of suggestions for 2010:

    – Showing the wine regions of the wines you're tasting on a map would be very cool.
    – Visiting a few wineries, restaurants, wine shops are also a lot of fun.

  • epsiode 756 and 757 might give you something?

  • GV- #801 and still havin fun! Will put an order in for 2 bottles of the Masante! Any suggestion on cellar time for these?

Jets 24- Chargers- 27…(sorry, but home field = 3 pts, right)?

    Travel safe, MikeK

  • chukheadted

rooting for the jets just for you, gary!

  • Just following instructions (maybe a bit too literally): “Something” “Comment” “Statement”

  • I prefer Barberas over Dolcettos

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind guest shows, as long as there’s a decent mix b/n them and the quick shows. But the bringing the blind challenges back, and these type of shows that have a good amount of education along with tastings have me to believe that the show is on a very good roll….

  • Todd

I like the Roberto Voerzio dolcetto d'alba quite a bit… looking forward to the '07 vintage from him. You'd have to be crazy to pick the Jets over the Chargers….

  • todd

beer tastes really good after 30 wines!

  • Gavin

Hi Gary and glad to say….
    I love watching your episodes.
And if i am honest,i am not a wine person.
But i love your energy and passion and humour and authenticity.
Maybe something about me also having some Russian blood.
And i just thought, what about Russian wines?.
    I may start drinking some.
I look forward to episode 1000!!!
    Happy and prosperous 2010.

  • Ron

As a Vayniac I welcome you to our little club.

I am the same way when it comes to wine. I don't know a lot but love watching the show and it actually helps me to learn a little about it.

Also already read Crush It! and keep it at my desk for good motivation booster. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I have.

  • GermanChemist

    Hi Gary,

as you wanted us to tell something… here we go.
I liked the Dolcetto show a lot, as most of the episodes. Commenting on the Buehler show I just wanted to say thubs up for the Chi!

And last Iยดd really like you to do a show on high value German wines including some pinot noirs or some Mosel Rieslings from my favorite producer C.H. Berres

    Take care
    regards from Germany
    Steven

  • PMHJ

your shows have help me evolve my palate tremendously, no questions there, but I also give them credit for my new found passion in both my personal life and in my biz dealings ? your enthusiasm is contagious, I find myself spreading the energy you project and I love it. I am looking forward to another 800 episodes. PMHJ

  • seb10

    Hi everyone,

In the listing of wines tasted today, it says that the last wine is a dolcetto d'alba, but it isn't. It's a dolcetto masante falling under the langhe denomination. Love the show.
    Greetz,

    Seb

  • Okay Gary, posting my first comment. Absolutely LOVE your series. Wine has been an interest of mine for the past 15 years (I’m in your age ballpark) and your show has taken it to the next level. I’m even considering enrolling in a wine education series at our local cc.

I’m going to try to find today’s third wine, unfortunately we live in Seattle, WA so I don’t believe your company will ship to our state…but just in case, here is a link I found. http://liq.wa.gov/publications/DirectShippingLaws.aspx

Keep up the great work you are doing!

Oh…and if anyone is interested, we started a “recipe blog” trying various recipes from cookbooks we like. http://sazarac.blogspot.com/

  • Ed

Love the show down in Melbourne, Australia Gary! Glad to see you thought the Leeuwin Art Series Chard was overrated the other day – couldn't agree more.

  • bella

I am an artist(not a football fan) and want to learn more about wine.
This episode is very interesting because I know zip about Italian wine.
    thanks

I only recently discovered some McLaren vale small producers that are making Nebbiolo & Dolcatta based wines. They are so different in a great way. I have fallen in love with the citrus peal tones.

By the way my favorite wine blog is mine – maybe this is being too full of shit but I enjoy producing it and seeing that my fan base increasing to over 1,000 view per month after only 10 months.

  • lol at the sour patch kids face whlie drinking the Camerano Dolcetto D'abla!

  • mloagogo

Good episode, really wanna try the Aldo Conterno. Missed watching during the 6 months I was traveling in S. America w/o consistent Internet access. Had some fantastic wines in the Casablanca Valley of Chile (Gary, I know you're a fan of the SBs and Pinots from there) and Mendoza, Argentina. Was fun to come back to my little collection of bottles as well… Keep on, keepin' on, Gary!

  • Richie

Its cold outside, there is alot of snow and I have a hangover.

  • Yeah, we watched the wine glass episode. Pretty fun. Also, Mom just signed up for Gary’s Wine of the Month. “A” category. I love it!

Gary: We love you too! We’re seriously considering a road trip to the east coast… ๐Ÿ™‚

  • chefrobertthehappydiabetic

Another great show! Jet's win no overtime. But…Nate Kating the woulds best kicker for my great state IOWA will give the Jets a headache. GO Hawks.

  • Rich

Great show on Dolcetto's! We were in Chicago visiting my wife's aunt for Thanksgiving, and the night before, after we prepared a lot of the stuffing and other dishes, we sat down, had a 2007 Scavino Dolcetto, and ate some salami and cheese we got from the local deli. The Dolcetto was so good with the dark berries and the great mix between the tannins and acidity, and like you said in the episode about the Massolino and the Aldo Conterno, the great aftertaste that continued on in our mouthes. It was just really great to sit down with her aunt, who's in her 70's, and finish off a bottle of Dolcetto and hear her talk about my wife's grandparents and other relatives! That's my story. Hey, I hope you have a great time down in San Diego, but I think the Chargers will win, 24-17. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hey Gary,
    I?m back in action; I see you?re starting off the New Year strong, perfect. I can?t thank you enough for putting out great shows, enhancing the knowledge of myself and the ?V? nation. So the question of the day is just to say something; from your comments you stated that you wanted to get more involved with the nation and participate in the blogging. So here are my comments to you. I?m probably your biggest Vayniac form Toronto, Canada- as you know we have a Liquor Control Board that facilitates all sales and selection of wines and spirits ( I know its horrible!!!! We need some Wine library business representation up in here) – I get excited when you try a wine that is available here;

    1) Do you think you can put out a show once a week, once a month, once a quarter that consists of wines available through the LCBO ( if need be, I can even search a list that you provided me with and communicate availability- joint effort).

    2) Gary/Vayniacs- What do you think of the Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 2005 as an investment wine?

    3) I will be going to Germany for business, I planned to be there 3 days in advanced so I can drive down and visit Giuseppe Quintarelli winery in Italy (I was blessed to try his 1995 and 1998 Amarone liquid gold at a dinner party- the vary wine that gave me the wine bug!) Any recommendation of other winery?s to visit around his?

Hope to read form you Gary and the Vayniacs,

    Mark

  • Would be great to see a review of a Bulgarian wine from the Thracian Valley. They're some really great affordable reds from this region.

  • RANDINTHECITY

I received some schwag from WineLibrary / Gary…and I just wanted to say THANK YOU. What a great surprise… Gary, youre awesome…and so is all the family @ WineLibrary.

Have fun in San Diego! I will be cheering on the Jets in a Boston bar surrounded by depressed Patriots fans. I'd rather be in San Diego.

  • Larry

A prediction from my heart JETS 17 -charges 6

Favorite espoide was the one with Samatha Brown. I also liked the blind tasting shows.

    Favorite TV Show NCIS

  • Hey Gary, I recently read an amazing book called “The Go-Giver” and it immediately reminded me of you! You give, give, and give till it hurts. Thank you soooo much for the kind of value you provide to the Vayniacs. Hope you're having an amazing time in San Diego! That's one of my favorite cities.

    Cheers,

    Kim
