You once said in Texas, at Texas State Mass Communications Week, ” Your legacy is your entire life”….i like that. Also, I appreciate my luck in having been given the opportunity to attend your interview or whatever you want to call it. You rocked it, huge success. TxState loves you, but im sure u know that. In fact, I got to ask you a question,.. something like, where you would be today without spending 24/7 of your time in social media.!? haha, now i look back and think, If only I had read your book beforehand, I would of crushed that answer. Anyways, Today I bought and finished your book. and congratulations, you're a madd genius. This is my first time comment, . – PEACE-

    p.s- thanks for being u

Great show (as always) – will try Dolcetto (can't find anything cheaper than $30 here though)

QOTD: My personal QOTD regarding wine is what really makes me drink white or red. Just came from a 2-week holiday trip from Thailand where I had only whites – obviously with a lot of seafood there you don't want to pick up red but even without food I had only white. (And nomally I'm a 80%red-20%white kind of person) But now, looking out of the window to the gloomy skies over Moscow I immidiately start thinking of red. So I guess it's the overall setting that really influences the choice.

  • Ol’ Rex has big balls – thats for sure…

Echoing Broadway Joe from 40 years ago, the New York Jets’ brash head coach predicts not just a Super Bowl appearance, but a victory parade too.

The Jets could pull of the upset if they “bring the wood”!!

So I’m staying true to my division – Jets 27 San Diego 21

    Hey Gary,
Well finally, my first comment here and it couldn't have been a better episode. Funny, interesting and even a little tear jerker moment at the end I felt *sniff*..
Thanks for keeping this up Gary and opening my mind and taste buds to some amazing wine. Sometimes the best moments of my day are 15 minutes watching WLtv and then getting home to pop a cork on a bottle with friends.

Cheers from Sydney! Here's to many more.

good stuff gary. i like the little intro before the startup music. gave a good rhythm and vibe to the show. i'm waiting for another snow show, too.

  • Since this is coming in so late, I figured I’d try and get as much done as possible out of the laundry list Gary gives at the end. Thus:

    Avatar – Done.

Comment – The Yanks won the WS, the Jets are in the playoffs, and the Knicks and Nets may yet combine for another 10-12 wins the rest of the season. Good time to be a sports fan in NY.

Statement – As long as we’re on the subject, this whole Jets thing looks like a win-win situation to me. If they win, they win… if they lose, we have one less thing to worry about. And what can be better than not caring…?

(Now that I think about it, the last two items are backwards.)

Favorite commenter – I have to admit, I started to read the comments only in the wake of the fallout after WLTV #796… Of those, IMHO, Jason M took a distinctly honorable tone. He was one of the earlier commenters, and was critical but gracious, a combination absent in some (but not all) of the other posts. Kudos.

Favorite Episode of WLTV – Tough one! Have only been watching since September, but have gone through my share of back episodes. (And they are all awesome…) My personal fav thus far is a pretty recent one – the champagne tasting with Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan (#756). Great info and then the awesome bottle opening procedure at the very end.

Favorite TV Show – I’d rate Top Gear very highly, but watching it here in the states is a somewhat labor intensive process…

Jets-Chargers score – Final score will be approximately 27-17. GV did not ask for a prediction of who will win, so none has been made.

Favorite WLTV moment – Probably all of episode 182. No spit bucket, big-ass-glass flying away, blizzard…

Best meal – I’m a sucker for ego-inflation, so probably the 10-person strong improvised lunch at my college apartment featuring my self-manufactured falafel. And a bottle of Moschofilero split among 9 out of 10 people.

Wine I loved – Very much enjoyed the ’07 (I think) Cotes-du-Rhone from M. Chapoutier. Not only was it very affordable – $12 or $13, if I remember correctly – it was also perfect for the setting. We opened it with some friends in the middle of a dark parking lot on a very cold night a couple of months ago, as we watched the remnants of the Leonid meteor shower.

Favorite Non-wine blog – Hal Higdon, a 111-time marathoner, moderates a running forum and writes a blog about marathon running (www.halhigdon.com). Nothing over-the-top or outrageous – the site has a 1998 internet feel to it – but it’s a straightforward, all-are-welcome atmosphere. Kind of like WLTV, except there’s no video, and it’s not about wine.

Thanks for yet another exciting and informative episode!

Haven't tried too many Dolcettos, but those that I've tasted range from a thin juice to Barolo-like tight-as-hell tannin punch in the face.

QOTD: What's good right now: Community with Joel McHale and Chevy Chase, NBA and of course drinking great wine alongside good food with the people you care about.

  • jcha24

Great show, love that you consistently state your mind on wines for better or worse.

QOTD: The first bottle of wine I had that really made me appreciate just how good wine could be was a 2002 Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee at Cafe Grey in NYC a few years back. Sadly Cafe Grey is no longer around, but that was the first time I had a wine of that quality and it has completed shaped the way I view wine/food.

Hate to do it Gary, but I think its going to be a 24-13 type game with the win going to SD.

By the way, love the recent Italian push on the wines – lot of great stuff I am just trying for the first time.

I picked up a book from b&n called “Windows OnThe World: Wine Journal” by Kevin Zraly. It's basically a journal for drinking wine, complete with a large area in each entry to paste the actual wine label. Thought it would be cool to track my journey into the world of wine =P
Great show as usual and I can't wait to see you at SOBE Food and Wine Festival!

It sounds like there is more wine that I need to get and drink. I love to travel, especially to Europe to visit wine areas and try new wines. I have not made it to Piedmont yet, but apparently need to.

    Hi Gary;
Big fan. I agree about the Dolcetto. I can still only find my favorite wines when in Italy, My family is from Veneto and of course I have a bias towards the region. However, a big hole in your reviews are the great wines of Friuli (Friuli Venezia Giulia) east of Veneto on the border with Slovenia. There is more than just Tocai Friulano from this region. One of the best growing districts is the Collio near Gorizia. There are some great traditional growers (wood barrels only) in this region. I suggest you start with an extremely old vine varietal called Pignolo (lots of history and a great story). Other highly notable varietals are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Collio and Collio Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino, Tazzelenghe, and Terrano. Keep it up. Robert

  • Nice avatar Fonzie

  • I'm cautiously optimistic about tonight's game. I'll agree with your close score OR the Jets will disappoint and it will be a blow out.

  • Doug

As a Broncos fan and Gary V. supporter, I'm pulling for the Jets for the first time in my life.

    Jets – 20
    San Diego – 17

  • I want to see the Jets win. As a lifelong Redskins fan, I am so accustomed to rooting for the underdog it'd be unnatural not to. The Jets have phenomenal momentum going into this game, but the Bolts are rested, at their home, and well-studied in the last two weeks' worth of films as to what the Jets will be bringing them. If the Jets win, it will be a close win. If they don't, it will be one-sided for the Bolts.

  • Great great episode! I enjoyed it very much!

  • Early Game – Vikings 31 Cowboys 24

    Late Game – Jets 26 Chargers 24

  • Obviously, predicting a Jets win, though disappointed the Ravens lost yesterday. Was looking forward to AFC Championship game at home – optimistically paid for the tix before the weekend! But will settle for a repeat of 12/27 win that ended the Colts' winning streak!

Jets 20 Chargers 21, sorry Gary. Im a dis-gruntled Pats fan.

I was hoping I could give you another Dolcetto selection for you to try out. Balbi Soprani DOLCETTO DIANO D'ALBA . I think the Dolcetto varietals are an amazing value/flavor and this particular one brings the “THUNDER!!”

    Enjoy your weekend

+1Really love the blind tastings and exploring unusual wines but don’t mind guests especially if they bring some thunderous wine knowledge.
